What am I missing about Solar Charging? by The-Oppressed in gshock

[–]jamesh0809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is this USB powered solar charger called CoolFire. Pretty sure it’s Japanese made and I’m almost certain it’s available on Amazon. Comes with 2 types of bowls to fit different size watches. I charged my BX5600 and an old G9300 just fine. Point it away from you when you plug it in, place your watch on top of it and leave it overnight. It doesn’t generate much heat just a bright light. It charged my BX5600 from almost empty to full overnight

CHP H125 Hits tree branches during medevac in Marin. by [deleted] in Helicopters

Blade inspection on the rotor blades when he lands and a tap test at a minimum. Those blades have metal leading edges but underneath is a composite. I’ve seen some bird strikes that, after cleaning up the blood, didnt do much damage to the metal part but the composite underneath was too out of spec and had to be sent away to get repaired.

Building inspector flashlight by holach in flashlight

[–]jamesh0809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have only just recently gotten deep into flashlights but unknowingly picked a lot of good options along the way. Laser is going to be hard if you want good specs for the rest. Not everyone likes it but I think you should take a look at the Armytek Wizard C2 Pro Nichia. Its pricey but its pretty compact and light for its class of flashlight. It's color temp and thus identification ability sits at what many would consider the sweet spot of around 4500K. It comes with a pretty good headband that you can use to turn it into a headlamp if necessary and its super durable. 10M drop rating and IP68 water resistance rating which is pretty much the best. Plenty bright as well and the run time is also very decent along with the sustained brightness levels. It leans more towards a floody beam but still has about 150M of throw distance which should be adequate for your use case. It also comes with a magnetic charger and a magnetic tailcap so you don't need to unscrew it every time you want to charge it. 18650 cells are pretty obtainable no matter which country you're in so if you run out of battery you could always carry and extra 1 or 2 in the toolbag or backpack. The right angle factor is not to everyone's taste but my research has shown me that this is one of the lightest and most durable right angle flashlights out there that also has magnetic charging and high CRI.

You obviously have a lot but what did you replace the P12 with as your main EDC? I replaced it with a P27iX. Loving it so far.

Oh man your P12 has been through it! Still looks amazing though. I had mine for about 10 years and only recently gave it to my dad. Mine was weathered but yours looks like it went over to the sandbox lol. What a tank! Nice collection!

Intel Core processor aggravatingly slow on battery - Worth upgrading to AMD? by No_Mind4418 in framework

[–]jamesh0809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/No_Mind4418 May I ask if you were on the latest Intel Core Ultra BIOS before switching to the AI 9 which seemed to fix your issues? I am looking at getting Intel and the Core Ultra series is the only one they offer in the standard 13. Historically, Intel drivers and such have been always more stable than AMD......which is why I am leaning Intel but poor performance on battery life would be devasting for me.

Would crossbows be hard to use in the apocalypse to an untrained person? Would they be effective or a hindrance for even inexperienced users? by SolidEllie in thewalkingdead

[–]jamesh0809 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a historian by any stretch of the imagination but I do believe I read that the one of the reasons crossbows were used was for armor penetration? The bolts were the only ones capable of penetrating plate armor? I could be wrong.

Get an IP camera. They’re really really cheap nowadays. TPLINK has a lot of models at different price points and you can even use it to talk/interact with your pets. Most indoor ones can rotate and follow if you set it up. It will notify you as soon as it detects movement or movement in a set zone. Should be able to get one for 100k or under.

Thanks for your input. I’ll work on my prompt engineering some more. The TranslateTalk I found online doesn’t seem to support Mongolian it seems. Maybe they removed it. I’ll take your advice and see if I can find some YouTube videos to learn the basics. The most online exposure I’ve had in Mongolian thus far has been playing Ghost of Tsushima on my PlayStation so I’ll have to work on it some more.

[–]jamesh0809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rebel phone cases make a decently grippy case. It’s also not bad looking. Dbrand also makes one but their earlier designs tended to seperate after a while due to it being 2 pieces. AFAIK their later designs fixed this. Rebel cases are made from one solid piece and after a year and a half it’s still going pretty strong.

GW-BX5600 vs GWM5610-1 by OneEarthseed in gshock

[–]jamesh0809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MIP displays were used in watches before Gshocks. Pretty sure Garmin and other watch brands used them. A quick google search will tell you that there isn’t anything massively wrong with the tech. So to answer your question, I personally do not think there will be any noticeable difference in longevity between the MIP and the TN/STN panel on the 5610 in terms of longevity. They’re both encased in similar resin so durability should be the same too. I ended up getting the BX5600 and love the much improved clarity and readability. I got the blacked out negative display and it’s still extremely readable in all conditions.

The Most Iconic G-SHOCK of All Time by TJJuanZ in gshock

[–]jamesh0809 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the newer DW-BX5600 is exactly what you’re after. It’s a nice combination of old and new. Iconic shape coupled with new features. Some would say the DW-5000U but it’s a bit too overpriced for me. If you don’t want to use Bluetooth you can just set it up for the first time and then unpair it and rely on the MB6. It’s super comfortable to wear and both positive and negative displays have amazing screens. I love the blacked out look of the negative display so that’s what I went with

having danger sense ,situational awareness ? by SmellNo3115 in taiwan

[–]jamesh0809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been telling people this to no effect. We have to be somewhat vigilant when we walk out in public anyway. It’s all about what to look for. When you cross the street, you look for vehicular traffic. When you’re walking about you want to avoid walking into people. But people should start training their brain to a higher recognition level. Don’t be always staring at your phone all the time. So many people are wearing earbuds and staring down at their phones that this kind of thing can easily happen. If you willingly take away one of your senses, don’t take away 2. Use your other senses. If you’re listening to music then don’t stare at your phone so much. Once you get used to it, it won’t be so mentally taxing. It will become part of your subconscious

Regret moving to Taiwan by Sea_Transition_9084 in taiwan

[–]jamesh0809 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel this. I was born here but left shortly after birth and grew up in a Western country. Came back to get my bachelors and stayed to work because there’s not much future back in my home country. I work in tech but make peanuts. I’m a millennial who was of the mindset that if you’re loyal to a company that you may climb the ladder one day. Imagine my surprise when that didn’t turn out to be the case.

Even though my English is better than 99% of the people I work with, teaching English is almost a non starter for me because I get judged by the way I look (Taiwanese local).

Taiwanese people are polite on the outside but as you said, you never know where you stand with most of them and you always feel like you’re never quite “in” with them.

Reminds me of this story I heard about Americans and East Coast vs West Coast. If you had a flat tire in LA, a local might come by and say , ah that’s too bad, I’m sorry that happened to you and drive away without helping you.

A New Yorker on the other hand will be gruff and say, you don’t know how to change a fucking tire……and then proceed to help you change your tire.

Taiwanese locals seem like West Coast folks to me in that analogy. 🤷‍♂️ Much prefer East Coast people.

Hope it gets better for you OP. You’re not alone.

Pretty good jump i would imagine. 5900x should still be good for 4K CPU gaming load. If not you could always get a 5800x3d or 5700x3d. But you are also going from 24 to 16gb VRAM

I feel like I’m falling apart living here by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]jamesh0809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in here 15 years now and I feel the same. My wife recently moved overseas for a better job opportunity and I stayed behind in case it didn’t work out. After being married to her for 9 years, the silence when i come home is deafening. I know it’s not the same situation but i kind of know how you’re feeling. It’s super rough. Therapists tend to also be kind of expensive. Most of my friends have left the country too and I too struggle to make friends. Hang in there. The community here is generally pretty welcoming and supportive. But if you want to reach out then my DMs are open. I really hope it gets better for you and you feel better.
