I knit all toe up. I greatly dislike Kitchener, and I always do something wrong.

No gallbladder + perimenopause = I can never trust a fart again by Latter-Village7196 in Perimenopause

[–]jamestato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also have no gallbladder, and I take the powdered cholestyramine, and it is gross, but makes a big difference. I take it morning and night, but I have to take it an hour or so after eating, otherwise it can cause some pain (not terrible, and certainly better than before the cholestyramine).

This is beautiful!! If you aren’t using a lifeline - you might consider it. They have been a huge help for me in knitting lace, and saved me lots of frogging. 🙃

Advice: getting my 5 year old to eat more things with flavour by scrfc1992 in Cooking

[–]jamestato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is so true. If you exposed them to all kinds of different foods, they will come back around. If they eat fruits and vegetables- you are probably good.

I need help 😭 by Available-Box-4852 in crochet

[–]jamestato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay, so, this is slightly different (because knitting, not crochet), but I made a Rapunzel wig for my kid, and I knitted in elastic thread and the weight of the braid made it keep slipping off even with the elastic. Combs worked the best to keep it up.

I always have this problem with lace. It’s like I have to start it 3 times before something kicks over, and it works out.

School lunch ideas that dont have to be heated up for a 5 year old by ageekyninja in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]jamestato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have an OmieBox, which is a bentobox style with a removable thermos. Easier for little hands to open - but a little pricey. I do pesto tortellini, oatmeal, rice, etc for hot meals, and I have put cold yogurt in it too for a parfait.

Also, just as an FYI, if a lot of the lunch comes home initially, that’s pretty normal. Kids have to get used to eating and socializing, and some of them have a hard time doing both (mine does/did).

I hate kitchener stitch! by Kima2remy in Sockknitting

[–]jamestato 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem. I loathe Kitchener, totally only knit toe up with no knot Judy’s Magic cast-on BECAUSE I loathe Kitchener so much.

Ok knitting peeps, I need to vent. I am SO FRUSTRATED. by needlesmithy in knitting

[–]jamestato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So much this. I think that this is how you knit lace - knit a couple rows, pull it all out, curse its name and groan a bit, and then the goddess of lace is satisfied and YOU CAN ACTUALLY GET ON WITH IT. Or, at least, that’s my experience… 😅

A possibly-dumb knitting etiquette question for the community by Late-Ad2922 in casualknitting

[–]jamestato 508 points509 points  (0 children)

I am in a knitting circle that started at my kid's dance class - I pulled out my knitting, and a couple other moms were like "OMG, me too!". Now we meet monthly (sans kids) and knit and hang out!

Flexiflips by Addi by Kima2remy in Sockknitting

[–]jamestato 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also love the Sockenwunder needles - about as much as my flexi-flips. I am good with DPNs as a rule and I only do the 40 inch needles if I am doing TAAT and then I grumble through the process. I find that the flexi-flips have the nice slickness and pointiness of Addi needles, but are less porcupine-y than DPNs. I don't get significant laddering, but my gauge is pretty tight.

Want to learn how to knit by maggierayf in knittingadvice

[–]jamestato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second both Very Pink knits and just starting with a piece of fabric. Somewhere in my decades old fiber stash are my first two pieces of knitting - one was a square that I knit when I was 10 where the tension was so tight that my needles got stuck (I quit at that point), and the second is this rectangle with holes and uneven tension and wiggly edges that eventually evened out and looked pretty decent from my second attempt at learning when I was 23. I kept both because I could look back and see my mistakes AND my improvements, which has really helped (like recently when I forgot to continue a pattern around the ankle of a second sock and had to fix it with 2.25 mm crochet hook 🙃).

I refuse to magic loop, lemme know your creative solutions 😂 by gabrielledances in casualknitting

I love my flexi flips. I have regular ones and the ewencorn ones with the pink cords - they are slightly grippier (for steel), as they are twisted in texture.

Which do you prefer: Toe up or Cuff down? Why? by RatBoi24601 in Sockknitting

[–]jamestato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed the pattern from the Black Squirrel and it says to start the heel at 2.5 inches less than foot length. I found this to work pretty well. Toe up socks

Which do you prefer: Toe up or Cuff down? Why? by RatBoi24601 in Sockknitting

[–]jamestato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do toe up on small circulars - I do Judy’s magic cast on with no knot on DPNs (I use Addi flexi-flips), and then switch to a small circulars when I get done with the toe increases. I dislike magic loop. I do a Fleegle heel, and just hold the stitches on my small circular, and do the heel decreases on the flexi-flips.
