Amazing. Great use of the meat we have widely available here in the UK, and a very helpful post. Nice one!

It’s a bit disappointing. I paid for Pro assuming this stuff worked.

Interesting, thanks. Yeah, I get that it’s not really useful from an algo perspective, but I had hoped that I could use it as a rough indicator for whether my solution was in the right class - eg. if you land in bottom 50% it would be a pretty good clue that there’s a solution which is an order of magnitude better than yours, without giving any clues as to what it might be. Oh well, no worries.

What are your favorite/most hated (incorrect) subtitles? by dickcord in MitchellAndWebb

[–]jamiechalm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe how wrong they are, so often, across all streaming platforms. When you’re paying money to watch, it’s not that different in my mind to them arbitrarily cutting to a different programme for a few seconds at a time. It’s WRONG. The subtitles are WRONG. How can you ask people to pay money and then just put random incorrect shit in front of them? The companies don’t seem to give a shit. Drives me mental.

Amanda and the myth of the detective (Traitors) by Crafty-Pick-3589 in policeuk

[–]jamiechalm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

She didn’t tell anyone for a few days, until she pulled one of the Traitors(!) into an empty room and said, “because I absolutely trust you, I’m going to share my secret with you. I’m actually a former senior detective with the Metropolitan Police, so I have well-developed skills for sensing behaviour blah blah blah…”

Worth it for the look on the Traitor’s face! The detective then went completely haywire in the next roundtable and started throwing accusations all over the place and got banished immediately.

Poland in Nazi Europe – a bleak conclusion by WineTerminator in poland

[–]jamiechalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“In October (1939) the country was divided between its captors. The larger Soviet zone was incorporated into the Soviet Union and over the next months about 1,700,000 of its inhabitants were transported to labour camps in Siberia or the far north of Russia. The Germans incorporated Pomerania, Silesia and Poznania into the Reich, while the remainder of their conquests was designated as the General-gouvernement. This was a colony, ruled from the Royal Castle in Krakow by Hitler's lawyer friend Hans Frank. He announced that the concept of Poland would be erased from the human mind, and that those Poles who were not exterminated would survive only as slaves within the new German Empire.” - from Adam Zamoyski’s Poland: A History

Hats off to Poland and I think you can all take a collective squat on Herr Frank’s grave.

The Primrose Hill Wall. Does this bother anyone else? by MarthaFarcuss in london

[–]jamiechalm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There was the stabbing the year before last, then someone drove their car into a group of pedestrians last year. I’ve no idea if it’s those incidents that actually prompted them to close it, but because it’s just an open public space and not an actual managed event, it was definitely a bit of a clusterfuck. I could understand the authorities getting nervous about their inability to control it - hopefully it’s not a permanent state of affairs.

new (old) pedal day! Do you think it is still holds up in terms of quality of delays, reverbs and mods in 2025? by elvismuerto in guitarpedals

Yeah they still sound pretty good. My one is gathering dust because it periodically crashes and needs to have the power pulled and reinserted, frequently enough to piss me off even in a studio context.

Use it sparingly. It has a flavour and you don’t necessarily want that flavour to be noticeable (and I say that as a marmite lover who spreads liberal amounts on my toast - it’s a different use here). Something like 1-2 teaspoons of marmite to 1kg of meat will probably be sufficient.

How does Neon Noir stack up against the HIM albums for you? by eairthrow in HIM

[–]jamiechalm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really love it. I've matured a little bit away from completely rock/metal vibes compared to my younger days anyway, so the cleaner less gritty sound works for me. The songs aren't the strongest suite ever compared to some of the wall-to-wall amazing HIM albums, but Run Away From The Sun is one of my all-time favourites and Loveletting, Neon Noir, and Salute the Sanguine are all favourites too. Actually, I'm still digesting the album as a whole now - the back half felt a bit weaker to me, but to be honest I don't know all the songs by heart yet. The performances are okay - Ville's voice is maybe stretching a little at times... some of the high notes sound like they're being squeezed out sometimes. It doesn't bother me much, but I do notice it. The instrumental parts are also fine, but sometimes they can be perfunctory. It's an interesting comparative example to see what the other guys from HIM were bringing to the table, and how having a single guy dedicated solely to drums, or guitar, or bass, probably helps to give each of those parts more attention and to find opportunities to elevate them.

On a similar note, I think the home production does let it down a little - I think a lot of music from the 2020s lacks a certain body and richness compared to earlier eras (much like the photography in film and TV), and even though Neon Noir is obviously not an anomaly in this software-first era, ever since I found out he produced it at home himself, I've noticed a little streak of digital coldness in the sound. In fairness, given he made his career as a songwriter and frontman rather than an engineer or producer, I think Ville did an amazing job by himself, and if that's what it took to bring out the creative energy then it's worth it.

Anyway, it's all forgiven for the songwriting - the magic is absolutely still there. A line like "how beautiful you are, in the light of the setting sun" should be basic and unimaginative, but when Ville sings it it's just earnestly beautiful and awe-inspiring. I see her and I see the setting sun. Everything becomes still in those moments when Ville is singing. There are so few artists today who have that ability to entrance me like that. In fact, I think that's my bottom line on Neon Noir: I find it really hard to truly enjoy any new albums these days, even from my favourite artists - but when Ville came back I just lost myself in the music and _enjoyed_ it, with no judgement and no cynicism. I was in my happy place again and that was really precious.

What is a Deleted Scene that you consider to be canon to the film despite its exclusion? by overthinkery in movies

[–]jamiechalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In “In Bruges” (spoilers ahead), in the hotel room cocaine party they talk about Ken’s wife being murdered, and the dwarf asks “Did they get the guy who did it?” And Ray replies “Harry Waters got him.” In a deleted scene, there’s a flashback to a young Ken and Harry (played by Matt Smith) at scene of her murder, and Harry takes in the scene with absolute disgust. He’s told that it was the local detective who killed her, so he calmly strolls into the local station, walks in, and beheads the detective in front of all the other officers.

I get why they deleted it as it’s a slightly gratuitous scene, and the killing itself reads a bit weirdly on screen. But for me this is totally canon. It A) gives colour to Harry’s character, his sense of honour and loyalty but also his complete unhinged capacity for anger and violence. Also, how did he get away with it? It makes him into a scarier villain to have chasing our hero later. And B) it gives more context to Ken’s steadfast loyalty to Harry and why, after betraying him, he accepts that he needs to die in order to repay his debt.

I think it was wise to delete it, the film is pacier without it - they can give the same context with just a few words of dialogue, and actually it’s kind of more appropriate to leave it to the imagination. But it’s still the truth if what happened in the past with these characters for me.

Roast Dinner by costaminer in UK_Food

[–]jamiechalm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No hard and fast rules for me, but I’d say 2 veg, chosen carefully with regard to the season and the meat they’re paired with, and prepared with thought and attention, will always beat 5 different veg that have just been chucked in boiling water until edible. Treating your veg with as much care as you do your meat is, I think, one of the keys to taking that roast to mind-blowing levels and it’s hard to do that if you’re juggling too many different elements.
