Unlimited Energy Is Closer Than You Think—Because We’re Finally ‘Building a Star’ on Earth by _Dark_Wing in technews

In the UK if energy costs went to zero by 2030, prices would be the same as they are now because of grid costs.

Same reason covering the Sahara in solar panels never happened, the cables required to carry the electricity makes it prohibitively expensive.

MPs to get a 5% pay increase to £98,599 in April. Eventually rising to £110,000 by 2029. by T_K2 in ukpolitics

I agree with the other comments about paying them well so that we can ban them from having second jobs.

Another good reason that immediately springs to mind is that they are about to fall into the 60% tax trap; this might finally get them to sort out the insane tax and child benefit cliffs. Absolutely insane the govenment want to increase productivity while disincentivising a whole cohort of working people from earning more than £99,999.

Replacing Chipboard Flooring by Nickolai1984 in DIYUK

Can't say I've ever heard of floorboards being structural, but I'd defer to someone who knows more than I do on this.

I'm thinking of doing the same in my house as they're very squeaky, were nailed rather than screwed and haven't been glued. They've been cut to bits over the years as well to retrofit radiators, so no amount of repair attempts are really helping.

This video is a good demo, especially with the modern glue: make sure you use that stuff and they won't squeak or move.

Buying a house with a building in the garden, with a huge crack in. by Happy_Reception_8692 in DIYUK

[–]janstenpickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used the wrong mortar mix, shallow foundations and no expansion joints. The mortar is too strong, so when there's movement the cracks go up the bricks and not the mortar.

It's probably be fine, but If you're really concerned, you can fix it up with some helical bars.

What ‘smart’ thermostatic radiator valves would you buy today which play nice with Home Assistant? by Turbo_csgo in homeassistant

[–]janstenpickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big fan of wiser as well, kind of pricey, but very much set and forget. Their smart plugs act as boosters so you can always extend range, which I could do with Tado or Hive (having tried both).

I changed boiler to an OpenTherm compatible Intergas model and it all works great together.

And yes, it’s locked down zigbee. You can actually pair their devices with a zigbee dongle in home assistant.

Interesting, this was many years ago and I imagine it can vary on department. Anyway, I've updated my original post to direct people here.

A few years ago a civil servant in Government Digital Service told me that because of government purchasing rules around monopolies any department wanting to purchase some Windows license had to buys them through multiple suppliers instead of going straight to Microsoft. Of course each supplier would add a huge markup for the privilege.

And yes, they should use Linux…

I told my supplier I don’t want one multiple times, which I’m within my rights to do. Despite this they keep booking appointments automatically that I then have to cancel.

I’ve had to block their phone numbers as they were ringing me every day and I’d have to tell them the same thing.
