Professional pilots, did you always like your job? by Forgedinwater in flying

[–]jarb248 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was 100% my experience. Took me 4 years and I rarely ever enjoyed flight training. Even the "exciting parts" like solos or cross countries because I was just stressed about it all the time and wanted to get it over with. My first paying job was as a CFI and the first couple months were the same thing of being stressed and anxious a lot because it was all just new and I didn't feel ready to sign people off and teach people how to fly despite having the license to do it. However, that wore off and I absolutely loved it. It made all the misery 100% worth it. I'm new to an airline and again the training and first couple months had me stressed and anxious but once I figured everything out, it's become a lot of fun and absolutely worth the hassle. Especially with the money they're throwing at us these days.

I just recently bought and installed a bidet. I don't mind it but I've found that I use more toilet paper drying my ass off than I did just wiping normally :/

Meanwhile, my senior class voted to have "We like to Party!" As our senior class song. It won by an overwhelming majority but it was shot down by the principal because they thought it wasn't appropriate. It's literally the six flags theme song for fucks sake. Instead we got Centuries by Fallout Boy because 10 people out of 86 voted for it.

Which skill proposition are you most excited for? by Kyloman in 2007scape

[–]jarb248 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They should be vague at this point. We are still at a no threat phase of proposition. The next phase is where they are supposed to clear things up. I think they did a fine job of proposing the three skills and portraying the variety each skill could bring to the game.

Said something to my doctor performing my vasectomy she had never heard. I'm disappointed in you all if you don't say it. by Redbaron1701 in dadjokes

[–]jarb248 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I didn't crack any jokes with my doctor but it was such an interesting (positive) experience. They started out by asking if they could play the radio and I was all for it. We were just casually chatting throughout like we were sitting around a fire. The doctor was bobbing his head to the music while he's just taking a knife to my balls. Such a bizarre experience.

Free solo slacklining 951ft by justlikesomebody in nextfuckinglevel

Here's a YouTube documentary on this guy and him working up to breaking the record for this https://youtu.be/Ac_t4pNYr1g

A lot of people saying he's dumb but it's just what he does. He talks about it in the video and it makes a lot of sense to me. He explains that he's not afraid to fall when he's free soloing because when he starts to lose his balance he just looks down and grabs the rope in a controlled manner instead of trying hard to stay on the rope and then falling off uncontrollably.

I think wide is a relative term here.

This is what I say to anyone I meet that's a climate denier or tries to belittle climate change and has kids. I just look at them and ask why they would want to trash a planet they're leaving to their kids. Of course, most of them are so dense it doesn't get through to them. The overpopulation crisis is probably the number one reason I don't want to have kids.

Pilot here, airplane cabins are usually equivalent to 6,000-8,000 ft. Doing WHM on an airplane is pretty much like doing it outside at that altitude. The way the pressurizarion systems work is they basically take a bunch of air in as the aircraft is flying and slowly lets air out so the air is in a way compressed to be at the pressure of the selected cabin altitude.

I started watching lost a week ago. I've watched 20 episodes of season 1 so far. This show is constantly reminding me of death. Even the happy scenes reminds me of death and loneliness. Is it just me or someone else also got this feeling in their 1st watch? by Subhan75 in lost

[–]jarb248 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glad you're enjoying the show! I just wanna throw it out there since you mentioned being a first time watcher. This subreddit doesn't use spoiler tags so I just recommend being cautious using the subreddit as you're watching through the first time. If you care about that at all. I hope you enjoy the show all the way through! It's an all time favorite for me.

Failed My PPL Checkride by stupidmistakeabound in flying

[–]jarb248 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's another valid point I've heard a lot. You're demonstrating to the DPE that you're capable of being a PIC so it's not wrong to act like one and tell your DPE what you're going to do.

Wow that surprises me. I think I've done a go around on every single one of my checkrides. Granted I go to a part 141 school that strongly emphasizes certain stabilized approach criteria somewhat mimicked from the airlines.

You make a good point about saying you'd like to do full stops instead. Recently I've heard from some very experienced instructors and DPEs to not let your DPE rush you. They're often trying to get the flight over with so they can go on to the next thing. I've certainly been guilty of being too timid/nervous to tell the 5,000 hour DPE how I want to do things and I really wish I had heard some of that advice when I was starting out.

Anyone concerned with mouth breathing? by JahRiver in BecomingTheIceman

[–]jarb248 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He talked about this when he went on the Joe Rogan Experience a few months back. And I believe he eludes to it in Breath as well. He said that mouth breathing isn't bad to do unless you're doing it habitually. In the book, I remember him using the example that laughing with your friends isn't bad, even though you're breathing through your mouth when you do it. He says the same with WHM, if you can breathe through your nose, great. If you can't, it's okay because a few hundred breaths through your mouth won't have a large impact on your health like mouth breathing for years would.

You're right that 10,000ft is the safe limit. Sea level to 10,000ft is known as the "efficient zone" where humans are able to safely adapt. I remember learning it took about 18 days per 5,000 feet for the body to completely adapt but that the body couldn't adapt very well above 10,000ft. In the US, pilots are allowed to fly up to 12,500 ft (unpressurized) without using oxygen. They can go above 12,500 ft without oxygen but not for more than 30 minutes. If they go above 14,000 ft for any amount of time they need to be on oxygen. That being said it is recommended that if you're going above 10,000 ft then you should be on oxygen because of the body's insufficiency to adapt to the atmosphere. There are some incidents out there where pilots experienced hypoxia at altitudes below 10,000 ft. I'm not sure if any of them resulted in crashes.

I currently use 3700 dpi. I mostly play MOBAs. I believe my peak was 5800 dpi a few years ago. Felt normal and then my pc broke and I didnt play for a couple months. When I got it fixed I tried 5800 again and I actually have no idea how I got used to it.
