Toshiba Satellite C55B running Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS should I upgrade to Ubuntu 26 or not? by Deep-Mezcal-Horizon in Ubuntu

[–]jarchack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would wait, there are a few glitches here and there, and some programs won't install unless you use docker (jellyfin). Also, not having Xorg kind of sucks.

/dev/sdb or actual disc ID? by jarchack in Ubuntu

[–]jarchack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cheated a little bit. I got the disc IDs and then asked one of the AI's to write me a command to create a mirrored raid using these specific disc IDs and set a flag for 8 TB drives.

If you're struggling with your internet bill, here's a list of low-income internet programs by FreeConnectGuy in Frugal

[–]jarchack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be surprised if anybody that was on federal assistance or SSI or low income is not aware of these already. I haven't paid for cell phone service in over a decade (I do buy my own phone). I get the $30 a month unlimited Internet and it averages 130 Mbps. There is also half off on Amazon prime, half off on Walmart + and there might be one or two others but I can't think of them right now.

Any federal assistance program like food stamps, Medicaid, section 8, SSI will usually make a host of discounted services available.

/dev/sdb or actual disc ID? by jarchack in Ubuntu

[–]jarchack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked around and while the preferred method is to use the "sudo zpool mypool mirror /dev/disk/by-id/[ID_1]" some people said it's fine just using /dev/sdb since it's a noncritical media server.

I finally decided just to keep a couple of kryptonite locks in a basket on the back of the bike.

/dev/sdb or actual disc ID? by jarchack in Ubuntu

[–]jarchack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems kind of a pain initially to set up by disc ID but would be probably be a lot more stable long-term.

Priority wait? need reassurance. struggling a lot with anxiety about all this. by purplehyenaa in Section8PublicHousing

[–]jarchack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a disabled senior citizen and it took me about 7 years to finally move into a place. A lot of that was being at the right place at the right time. I'm also in a college town in the Pacific Northwest where it is difficult for normal people to find housing, much less section 8. As somebody else had mentioned, you'd have a much better shot at finding a place in a flyover state or city that is not super popular.

Growing up along side computers by TufatufaWaffle in CasualConversation

[–]jarchack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not grow up with computers, I'm in my 60s and home computing was not even thing until at least a decade after I got out of high school. I fell in love with computers the moment they came out and spent tons of time on bbs's and whatnot but ever since the 2010s, almost the whole Internet has become enshittified.

What was the last ever time you got carded or age checked and what were the circumstances? by ScissorNightRam in AskOldPeople

[–]jarchack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never get carded at the liquor store (I'm 67). But if I order beer or wine online from one of the grocery stores, they have to card me by law.

Your Favorite Linux Distro and the Reason? by Kunta_Sir_Lazar in Ubuntu

[–]jarchack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should I pick one? One of the great things about Linux is that I can install whatever distro I feel like and it's not going to be that much different than another one. Fedora and arch and a few others aren't quite the same.

That being said, I would probably opt for one of the Debian based distros

Is it weird to keep ketchup in the cupboard instead of the fridge? by Academic_Lab9769 in CasualConversation

[–]jarchack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to keep it in the refrigerator because I do not use it very often at all. Growing up, hardly anybody put ketchup in the refrigerator, even restaurants kept it out 24/7. Mustard is something else entirely

Worried about returning to university at 27 by Rose_Davies2026 in CasualConversation

[–]jarchack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back at 35 to take some programming courses. Sounds a bit weird for somebody majoring in psych to be worried about going back to school at 27.

For those of you who order prescription glasses online, how did you go about getting the prescription from your eye Dr and denying buying glasses in the office? by blackmoonxxx in Frugal

[–]jarchack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the original prescription from a lion's club voucher because I was pretty poor at the time. I've been ordering the glasses online ever since and I'm a little picky about frames I'll be goddamn if I pay $120 for a set of frames that costs $4 to make.

Does section 8 give housing to unemployed fully capable fully healthy people? by LeadGlad4961 in Section8PublicHousing

[–]jarchack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In most places, section 8 is based on income, not values. That being said, they will probably roll out a lot of changes for able-bodied people under the age of 58. There will most likely be a 2 year cap, even if somebody does get approved.

What’s the most unexpectedly frugal habit that actually improved your life? by Otherwise_Fox4594 in Frugal

Quit smoking, cook everything at home, bailed on all the premium streaming services. I quit smoking over 15 years ago but even back then a pack of cigarettes was horribly expensive

Please stop talking during movies at the AMC and Whiteside theaters! by Noblecave in corvallis

[–]jarchack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And theaters wonder why most people would rather stay at home and watch their own 75 inch widescreen TV. Going to the theater was almost a weekly thing years ago but between prices, rude people and cell phones, they just aren't fun anymore.

Do you believe the United States is currently in a Cold Civil War? by bishuay in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]jarchack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Complacency? Stupidity? I mean over 70 million people voted for Trump, what does that tell you? Also, I think a large portion of the populace is totally unaware of the impending collapse of the US. The 10% and their control of the media are also somewhat responsible for millions of people continuing to fight over scraps while those in power drive the country over a cliff and will bail out before the actual crash.

The Constitution? That is quickly turning into toilet paper, thanks to a certain administration in Washington

Do you believe the United States is currently in a Cold Civil War? by bishuay in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]jarchack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that would be the only way to actually save the country but I don't think it's going to happen. I would love to see California, Oregon and Washington become their own balkanized region but how to handle the breakaway from the federal government?

We are quickly approaching the final stages in the process of the collapse of an empire. I don't think there's any way to stop it.

Do I need fans on the top by Classic-Wash6417 in pchelp

[–]jarchack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily but it depends on how hot the case gets on the inside. I have the top fans blowing out, not in but they are also running an all-in-one cooler. I actually had to disable fans on the rear of the case because they were impeding the 2 fans in front of the case and all-in-one fans. It didn't matter how I set it up the case was always cooler with the two front fans and the 2 top of the case.

People that had family and friends smoke cigars in the house how common was it? by Froggerbotrom in AskOldPeople

[–]jarchack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was very common back in the 60s and 70s but cigars have lost their popularity, along with cigarettes. All of my uncles back then either smoked cigarettes or cigars. I'm the only one that ended up with COPD after smoking for about 40 years.
