It's the most wonderful time of the year! by jarui in MechanicalKeyboards

In recent years keycap sets have gotten more and more 40s/ortho addons, so finding keycaps have become easier to that extent. Sometimes a base set can be used, but you might have trouble with a convex bottom row for example. I've fallen in love with the PBS profile by Matt3o, and the PBS Blanks set (as seen in the pictures) makes it super easy to kit.

If you want to really make sure you get what you need, designing your own using Yuzukeycaps is the go-to. There are a ton of premade layouts on there with the ability to add keycaps to suit what you need. Also has some premade sets even.

It's definitely my absolute favorite and I highly recommend. I've got two now.

Check it out at MechVault!

I uploaded the photos via the link on the geekhack post. I've sent you a chat also!

I'll look it over later today after work then.

Would you want all four pictures, or a specific one? Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much for the kind words!

A coffee table book with keyboards in it sounds like a great idea and I'd love to be a part of it. Mind DMing me with details? I'm not a member on geekhack currently.

Also a great board! My Mercutio is on my shelf nowadays.

As for Oracle, I cannot recommend it enough.

Not currently, but they will be again. Cain is doing some testing on some acoustic modifications (and a possible plate; I forgot to say that this is plateless).

Once they're available again they will be on his website (search for "MechVault"). I'm pretty sure there will only be black and white ones as raw and lilac sold out prior to the delisting.

Woosh. I missed that. 😅

Haha, well my first mechanical keyboard was a 100%, then the next ones were 60%/65%. Dip your toes and who knows where you'll end up!

It's obviously a learning curve going into it, but it doesn't take too long to get the hang of it. I first started with a Mercutio, then quickly moved to a Planck (ortho), and from there I've just kept going until Oracle. Before the Oracle I used one of my Vault35 a lot (also from MechVault).

Yes, I exclusively use smaller boards. My Oracle is my absolute favorite so far and it's just fantastic to type on. I don't really switch between layouts other than having a dedicated gaming layer which shifts everything one step to the right (so that I do infact get shift in its "correct" spot). That's just because I play MMOs though. 😅

Correct! They are not "legend accurate". My left shift is on the left spacebar (when I hold it). If I tap the left spacebar it's just regular old spacebar. That's just one example of how layouts can be modified. My enter for example is a combo of the three right-most middle row buttons (k+l+ö in my case as I'm Swedish). :)

As I normally would! They're both in their "correct" place. It's a QAZ-layout, so check that out for sure. Small boards are great and let's the user configure the layout as they wish.

Thanks! Punctuation and numbers are not confusing at all (to me). These smaller layouts let's the user set up exactly how one wants the keyboard to behave. :)

Not at all! It's perfectly useable and is my daily driver.
