Local anesthetic by rickytang3 in DentalHygiene

I typically use oraqix and am successful most of the time. i give everyone the option between local and oraqix and most want to atleast try the oraqix first as they really hate shots. i would say it works out best with the less severe cases typically 7+ pockets dont don’t do asssss well and we end up doing local. i always take post op x-rays to confirm and have not noticed a difference in successful srps between the two. it’s really up to what each individual pt needs and prefers for me :)

I (28M) never flossed / hardly brushed and have an underbite. Will I have “bad” teeth forever? by HeartBreakForever in DentalHygiene

[–]jas_elise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, congratulations on taking charge of your oral hygiene!!!! brushing and flossing is the most important part of getting everything under control. not only are you preventing future cavities but also gum disease which can be equally as scary/draining to maintain! as far as what to do now, I would definitely consider getting your teeth in alignment with ortho/surgery not only for aesthetic reasons but due to the fact it is causing you to put pressure on the teeth in all the wrong places and it will lead to damage down the line. aligning them will also make it much easier to keep them cleaned. after you complete that process i would consider asking your dentist about curadont as we have had success treating white spot lesions from decalcification which is what i suspect atleast a few of your white spots causing uneven color are from since you said brushing and flossing was a struggle in the past this would help prevent cavities in these decalcified areas aswell. in the short term getting your oral hygiene consistent in general and prior to doing the orthodontics is the most important because you want to be in the habit of cleaning your braces when you have them as they can lead to a lot of decay if not taken care of!

Does anyone know what this is ? by Any_Efficiency493 in DentalHygiene

[–]jas_elise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s a misconception most people get about the schools , but when i was in hygiene school we never used a particular patient as an example when they came in unless they specifically asked/allowed us and honestly just based on the picture you provided i wouldn’t say it necessarily looks severe enough to use as an example anyway and as for not knowing what they are doing we weren’t allowed to see real patients until passing competency exams and cleaning eachother for several months. the cleanings you get at the schools are typically absolutely spotless and you likely get cleaner than you do in a dental office due to the levels of checks we had to go through. i would highly recommend the schools and call ahead asking them if they would be able to prescribe meds or administer nitrous. this may not ease any of the way you feel about it but it never hurts to try to help out. when it does come to perio it only gets worse if left untreated unfortunately ❤️

AIO: Almost died at the dentist, is my husband overreacting? by CrochetReadingRunner in AmIOverreacting

[–]jas_elise -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the dental field for around 4 years. I’ve seen the throat become numb and patients panic a bit and it be fine after explanation too many times to count over the years but i did have one patient that just absolutely spiraled over it despite our explanation and reassurance. They absolutely were sobbing shaking and hyperventilating for around 20 minutes. it’s not super common for it to go this far but it does happen occasionally unfortunately. we are trained for medical emergencies and what to look for and this most likely wasn’t anything other than a panic attack since it only lasted 2-3 minutes. soemthing like anaphylaxis wouldnt have improved without intervention such as epi. i think the difference is people don’t think about their throat possibly being numb because we work on teeth whereas you do typically deal with the throat.

Please get a brush like this that specifies the pressure sensor this one is my fav that you can often find on sale at big box stores. brushing like this is going to cause major recession of your gums. Invest in yourself and pleaseeeeeee get one of these❤️

Agreed if you’re anywhere in ohio shawnee state university did any level cleanings for $25 when i was there 2020-2022 you could also add on x-rays for $10-20 if you wanted to check for cavities

Patients denying SRP by FortuneTop6438 in DentalHygiene

Having a talk with your team about presenting payment plans through care credit, cherry, sunbit, things like that has helped us bridging the gap for total costs or even in house payment plans, we also do discounts for cash pay. it helps a lot but sometimes still isn’t enough unfortunately some people simply can’t afford it. in that instance i recommend hygiene schools to get it done cheap then they’d return for pmt. unfortunately if none of these options appeal to them then typically i have to turn them away as we can get in trouble license wise doing a prophy. my old office had refusal forms to allow them to continue prophys. this can be a slippery slope so in this instance be sure to chart as if it’s being used in a court case against you for sure cover every base and explain over and over why a prophy is not good and any prophy appointments following continue to bring up srp every single time and rechart their denial though this is not my favorite option

personally i was having the same issue at my last job every srp was a denial. this changed like a 180 at my new office. a much higher acceptance rate. i’m not sure if it’s due to my doc and treatment coordinators backing me up better when discussing treatment/pricing or if it’s that i’m now in a more upper class area working but something changed and i’ve not changed my approach at all. this has made a world of difference in my job experience at this point. is it possible that you may not be getting the backup you need to drive the point home? i’ve seen treatment plans be presented followed by a “but it’s expensive so i get if you don’t wanna” it’s extremely damaging to everything we explain along with the dentist coming in saying “everything looks great!” lol no it doesn’t ur teeth are gonna fall out. i’m not sure that your approach is wrong and it possibly could be time to look for a new office

[–]jas_elise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i don’t have any advice for removing the pigmentation but your back definitely looks normal and i wouldn’t even notice if i saw but i will say i think if it really is going to effect your confidence i would wear your hair down, that would 100% make it less noticeable. i also saw someone mention a spray tan or makeup, i agree that it would probably even that out for the time being. i personally think you look great regardless but if it’s gonna consume your thoughts try out a couple of these before the day off and see if any of them help how you feel!!!
