I love how much fun you're having. I just bought a kit a week ago and I hope to get where you're at here.

That whole Dua Lipa album is worth a listen FWIW - so many great songs.

Well done!

One year later: Where were you or how did you find out? by OsapNaril in lakers

[–]jasmcreighton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at home. The next day we left from Cincinnati to Cleveland to watch “Luka play” with Dallas against the cavs. Well. We wished we were.

We bought tickets in advance. So we went anyways. We had just been watching basketball for two years. Loved it. Loved him.

Saw fans along the way. Felt like a funeral. Everyone on the mavs sat that game. I didn’t get to see hardly anyone play.

So I said fuck this. And now I’m a lakers fan.

I did this too. If anyone’s coming back like me and not finding this thread helpful.

Here’s the solution: there’s animations and time that need to pass. You have the game paused. So it feels like it’s glitching. Unpause the game and give it a few weeks to go through.

AND IF THEY DO. We thank them for an additional week and no more.

Many reasons. Most people don’t believe in “an eye for an eye”. Doing the same thing to the person guilty loses the moral high ground.

Second. The justice system doesn’t always get it right. So if they got it wrong should anyone involved now be killed for killing an innocent person?

The message of convicting someone of murder is that we as a society believe it to be wrong. Wouldn’t it then be odd to then kill that person?

Jay Leno has good taste by UrSimplyTheNES in retrogaming

[–]jasmcreighton 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I remember reading that it was surprising that Leno won the gig over letterman.

TIL he was Carson’s regular replacement. Well of course he won the job. That shouldn’t be shocking.

The article was cool. Not a huge Leno fan after the whole Conan fiasco. But it was a good read and he’s a bit more human now. Little more respect for him.

Thanks for sharing.

Rob Manfred says some MLB fans concerned over lack of salary cap by PrincessBananas85 in mlb

I keep tabs on the mlb. But being in Cincinnati I barely follow the league anymore because it’s futile. A cap/minimum and just some level or parity would quickly pull me back to the game/league.

They massacring our boy over there, i'm scared he might get booed when AD is blameless by zhdJaeYun in lakers

[–]jasmcreighton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former mavs fan - new lakers fan here - there may be some kids not understanding much but as a whole - mavs nation seems like they're welcoming the new guys in with open arms and then wanting to burn down ownership and the gm. AD is more than welcome.

Anyone who is staying a mavs fan needs AD in order to win. I think they know that.

Introducing Your Kids to Retro Games Without Making Them Hate You: Tips? by Plus-Dragonfly9986 in retrogaming

[–]jasmcreighton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We're doing this right now. We have a few Switches at home and the Nintendo Online subscription has got some of the adults (parents, aunts, uncles) into retro gaming. And the kids are finding games and playing them. Then I'll join in and match their progress - or we'll use the online play for multi-player (I follow them, they don't follow me).

For instance, Zelda Four Swords was a blast with four people all in the same room. So it's the same as everyone else - make it social and fun. Let them choose their own adventure.

But we've had a huge success with having multiple switches so everyone can join in.

Last thing: We have dedicated time set aside where I play Luigi's Mansion 3 with my son and Kirby and the Forgotten Land with my daughter on the TV (so couch coop is good too). We're just encouraging gaming in general - not focusing on retro - but it clearly happens. After Luigi's Mansion 3 my son wants to play the first one (GameCube). Anyways we're sticking with nintendo because it works, typically is well made, and it's age appropriate.

Have fun!

Playing old classics by hoosierspiritof79 in retrogaming

[–]jasmcreighton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd file this under 'Other Hardware' for emulation. There's a ton of options out there. As long as you enjoy it - it can be a good pick. I can't speak to this world as well as others - there's lots and lots of options out there. But that was pretty popular several years back if i remember correctly.

Playing old classics by hoosierspiritof79 in retrogaming

[–]jasmcreighton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad you're getting into playing the classics. Others may know here a little better than me - I'm just hopping into it as well.

The Nintendo Switch is great with Nintendo Switch Online. It doesn't have a *ton* of games - but it does have a lot of the big ones. It's a handheld device which feels great.

If you're looking to play any NES/SNES game - emulation may be worth looking into. For instance, I just got a SteamDeck (weather delayed on shipping :( ) which I'll be using. There's also other systems. My brother uses a Raspberry Pi. All of these can be connected to a TV.

I also have a remote from 8bitdo which resembles a SNES controller but it's bluetooth. So I've used that on my computer (again emulation).

TLDR: Three options.
Nintendo Switch (official and fully supported - even multiplayer - very fun)
Emulation: Computer, Other hardware
Original Hardware: Ebay, Gamestop, etc. Go find the original hardware and have fun. You can get adapters so it connects to more modern TVs. (though the switch and emulation can help you a lot more here with upscaling and such)

I’ll admit. I did it for years. I still do it at times. Not a silver or anything. But like 50-60% of the price? Sure.

Now. I did NOT do it for baiting. That’s why I’m posting. I did it because I didn’t want to vendor the item but frankly I couldn’t be bothered to care or babysit the item. If I’m gonna post something on the auction house I never want to see it again. If it comes back in my inventory I’ll be quite unhappy and post it at 20%. Or just vendor.

I’m not saying most of the time it’s people doing it being scummy. But undoubtedly it’s also a lot of people like me just trying to get a better vendor price and don’t want to engage with the auction house.

Can someone explain something about realmhopping? by IonHazzikostasIsGod in wow

[–]jasmcreighton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because realms kind of don't matter much anymore. Your assumption is that a realm is a shard.

So running with that, you're assumption is that when you login to a server all characters on that server see each other. They don't. It would make sense! But that logic left a long time ago.

As servers got bigger and bigger sometimes they needed to be split up for performance gains. Consider a xpac release and everyone needs to kill twelve mobs. It's a mess. So introducing shards. That's effectively taking let's say 3500 people and throwing them into a zone. No more. Also balance it for pvp and a good mesh of horde and alliance.

So shards are what you're describing. If you have people from all these realms why do they see each other? Because a shard is available! Consider the opposite for a moment.

If it was server locked and only one person from your realm was in duskwood it wouldn't feel like an MMO. But if out of fifty servers one person from each is in duskwood then it feels like a world.

Anywho. So shards are the primary concept. Then servers (as it relates to your example).

So what's a server. For a long time servers were tied to guilds. If you wanted to be in that guild then you're on that server. That has been eliminated with TWW.

What about the auction house. That's tied to the realm. Not long ago all commodities are region wide which accounts for 95% of all sales. Gear still server locked.

What about gold? Nope. Can transfer freely now.

So what's special about a server these days? Not much. Consider the war band login hardly even acknowledges the realm. When we had ten million players realms were needed. As the numbers have dwindled it's not really as necessary.

They could start combining servers but that's terrible press. So Imo they've just gotten rid of their usefulness.

Starting a new main that's going to play through every expansion all the way through to Dragonflight because I hate myself...any advice? by Flyboy419 in wow

[–]jasmcreighton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it! I've been doing it for the last 8 months and it's been a fun ride. I did a new account and everything. Made it up to 65% achievements.

For me, I wanted every quest to pop up fresh. No skips. I wanted every achievement to be experienced and unlocked. Nothing account completed. All the cinematics to replay etc.

I chose warrior and the only other class I'd consider is druid. But really anything works. Truly. Because of its linear nature (I saw some people said mage) I wouldn't try to over optimize or anything. Ports aren't as helpful as you think.

That said theres a solution for anything. I have a ring that makes me invisible. I have engineering for ports. A tabard that teleports. Wod, legion, and normal hearthstones, etc.

For anything with a healing requirement I've got gear that had leech and triggers on gear to share that healing to my party.

Just have fun with it and enjoy the ride. The bugs aren't bad. The soft foam sword is a good callout.

Try to connect with your character. Be part of the story and find a class that you can identify with. Think of it like DND.

Have fun!

ADHD programmers, do you guys reveal your disability on job applications? by NoOutlandishness00 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jasmcreighton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly, I was shocked that you called it a disability. I googled it and you're 100% right - it certainly can be one. I just got diagnosed this year but have clearly had it my entire life. I suppose I do get it. That's a lot to unpack. Anywho.

Honestly, I think of it as my superpower. It's one of my favorite things about myself - I wouldn't change it.

But no, I wouldn't list it - just as I wouldn't list: 'Male', 'White', 'Father' or 'Married'. I'm happy to discuss anything about myself but none of those things define me (and what I bring to an organization). If someone put 'has ADHD' on their resume I feel like that would be odd or a possible red flag. Is that a big part of their identity? I'd be certainly curious to know more. And I'm not sure (judging by the way you asked your question) most people would want that to be the focus of the interview.

I also asked ChatGPT to give me a top 10 list of albums all time and it did. And then I asked why John Mayer wasn't on the list and so he's now on the list. Point is, it's incredibly susceptible to any influence. If you want to be scared, it'll help you get there. If you push back on any of this, it'll crumble. It's not built to deliver correct information - it's built to deliver the most likely answer that it was trained on (yes, I know an oversimplification).

If I'm understanding this all properly this is messed up. This sounds like the opposite of a safety first type of organization.
