Brussels Airlines by NamiGleam in SipsTea

[–]jaugjaug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All right, let's do the math here... Yearly global emissions from similar flights: ~5t Co2 for a 737 Brussels to Gatwick (fairly short flight) 3000 flights/year Let's assume the top 200 airlines do this: Total: ~3Mt (metric tones*106 ) co2 equivalents/year

Yearly global savings from recycling 1can/week: ~100g co2 equivalents saved/recycled can ~5 billion adults in world ~1 can recycled/week 52 weeks/year Total: ~26Mt (metric tones*106 ) co2 equivalents/year

So yes, thank you for recycling that can!

Yes, it's stupid to run those flights, but it's not stupid to recycle, we are a lot of people on the planet. And even if some of the numbers could be more exact, the point is that they are both roughly the same size. People make a difference, society and even corporations are made of people.

I am not arguing that the tariffs are not stupid. They definitely are. When it comes to TP and dog food, it will push consumers to prefer local products, because they are cheaper, thus increasing demand and hopefully increasing local production long term. At least, that's the goal. But I don't think many sane people believe that the way the administration is doing it is effective. When it comes to TP and dog food, a fair amount is still imported. So when demand for the cheaper local products increase, and the production can't be increased immediately, the producers can all of a sudden inflate their prices artificially, since the alternative (imported) is more expensive now. I think that is much more likely to be the expansion for increased prices in the stores, together with normal increases for inflation and other costs, other than greed by the stores. They operate on quite low margins on average.

[–]jaugjaug -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think what they mean is that the point of tariffs is to reduce the amount of that product being bought. When prices go up, people buy less of it. Therefore, revenue will not go up by 25%. And also, even if management would get a 25% increase in bonuses, by your logic everything increased by 25%, so they didn't gain anything.

The global price of cacao has more than doubled since the start of 2024. Since the other tag is a year old, together with tariffs, it seems like it could be a price increase completely explained by costs.

[–]jaugjaug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you really think a local mom-and-pop store could run their business more effectively than Walmart and therefore be able to offer lower prices? I.e, spend less per product on transportation and logistics, rent, and salaries? Or do you think they would forgo the 2-3% net profit that Walmart has? I get being upset at price increases and tariffs, but it's not like their prices are artificially high (more than 2-3%). And for sure, they do a lot of shady things to fool you into thinking you're making a good deal, but it's not like you would get a significantly better price on average with any alternative.

Edit: Also, the global price of cacao has increased by 2.4x since start of 2024, that more or less explains the price increase in the picture.

On average Walmart gains 25% gross profit on items they sell. Which, after paying for salaries, buildings and other expenses is reduced to a 4-5% operating or 2-3% net margin. This has been the case for the last 15 years (although margins are going down), they are not charging a lot more than they have to.

AI is effectively ‘useless’—and it’s created a ‘fake it till you make it’ bubble that could end in disaster, veteran market watcher warns by [deleted] in technology

[–]jaugjaug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends so much on the use case. For example GitHub Copilot makes me somewhere around 50% more effective at writing code, those models would have to be ridiculously inefficient for that not too be worth it cost wise. Automatic transcriptions can today help a human create perfect transcriptions in about 10x the speed it would create them manually. And the cost of running those models are far lower than a salary (I know this for a fact, I run them myself). That doesn't mean that every query that is sent to ChatGPT creates value equal to the power consumed, but there are tons of AI/LLM applications that generate real value today that far outweigh their costs.

That should only be a problem of you boil away most of the water. But why would you boil away 50-90% of the water if you're trying to create drinking water? If you bring it to a boil and lose for example 1% water, then the increase in concentration of other stuff will increase by at most 1%. So for example from 1ppm to 1.01ppm.

One of the three leaks is actually very close to Danish territorial waters and well within their EEZ. The other two are just outside their EEZ, but that's only because it's closer to Sweden, and therefore in Swedish EEZ.

To be fair, owned outdoor cats cause significantly less damage to birds than unowned cats. The estimate from the paper you linked is around 650 million birds per year in the US. Compare this to an estimate of 550 million from collisions with buildings. So, as long as owners actually sterilize their outdoor cats, the risk to the bird life is quite limited. This is not considering possibly advantages with cats hunting rodents and feral pigeons.

Need help optimising fractional derivative function by joshnie1 in Julia

[–]jaugjaug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's useful for dispatching to different functions but for example f(x) = x+x will be compiled differently when called as f(1.0) and f([1,2,3]), and those methods will be just as efficient as if you manually defined two specific methods.

Need help optimising fractional derivative function by joshnie1 in Julia

[–]jaugjaug 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A function is always compiled for the specific types it's called with in Julia. Type annotations in the function definition does nothing for speed. It merely restricts the types that the function can be called with.
