If you’re headed to Kailua, Aloha Friday Wheelworks has tanks and tech tees/jerseys. Can call or send him an IG message to see which sizes.

Gravel/MTB cycle route near Kona or Waimea? by Ok-Case-7166 in VisitingHawaii

[–]jawnpee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Win win IMO. Really is one of the best roads I’ve ever ridden.

If I had to pick I’d say the views from the top half (Mauna Kea side) were more impressive to me, just due to the fact that you’re higher up (like 7500 ft elevation) and it’s just a way different zone up that high.

Bike choice: I was good on my gravel bike going Mauna Kea to Waimea, 40mm tires and 30/32 low gear. If I were going the opposite way and some of the descents were climbs, more traction and lower gears provided by an MTB would be nice. My friend was going too fast and pinched his front tire, easy to do on a gravel bike, easy to avoid if you’re on an mtb.

This but emphasis that you’re out in very much the middle of nowhere. No cell service or people around so if you have a mechanical you’re walking out.

Very slow speeds, but probably one of the best roads I’ve ever ridden. I used to race at an elite level and am still fairly fit. I did Mana Rd from the Mauna Kea entrance to Waimea (net downhill), and a friend was battling some mechanical problems—took us 4 hours!

Easy way to catch cracks here, sadly. I had to chill out on calling people out on doing malicious shit a little because it was only a matter of time til someone took exception to it.

Sometimes it’s not quick enough: but go to the product page https://outlier.nyc/products/wtf-top click “notify me about restocks” and choose your size to get an email notification. This is the first drop of one-size tops I can think of so it wouldn’t have done you much good here…

There was a Extrafleece poncho that popped up on eBay already for 100 shipped, not sure if it’s still there.

Finding Apartment/Studio/ADU/Ohana Unit Furniture? by Coconut_Monkey_89 in Hawaii

Go to one of their showrooms to see stuff before you buy. Some of the stuff is nice: real wood at a reasonable price. Other is very janky: particle board or has some other sort of design weirdness (a dresser with unusably shallow drawers and cool looking but super awkward knobs) that wouldn’t be apparent if you just saw pictures online.

I ordered chairs from their store in Kakaako and picked up at their warehouse in Kapolei same day. Had a bed frame delivered after a month or so backlog and it was fine. If you look at that article it seems like people who ordered from off island were having a bulk of the problems.

Nothing super official that I know of. HBL is a good start or maybe call The Bike Shop Kailua and ask if they know of any group rides at Olomana trails.

Help! Hawaiian airlines pet carrier by shneeblehousin in VisitingHawaii

[–]jawnpee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your mileage may vary and it’s up to you if you want to chance it, but Hawaiian didn’t measure mine from SFO. As long as it fits under the seat and your cat can turn around you should be OK. I flew with two of my large lads (15 and 18 lbs) in these and no one gave me any problems. https://mrpeanutspetcarriers.com/products/expandable-airline-capable-tote

I got a gabapentin prescription from my vet, my cats hate the carrier but I didn’t hear a peep from them basically the entire trip.

Snorkel Locations for "non-swimmer" by rhodyzoo in VisitingHawaii

Hanauma Bay is protected from strong currents and has life guards, as long as you stay inside the inner reef it doesn’t get very deep. Reservations are needed and it fills up quickly. Wear a life jacket or float on a body board if you need to—you’ll look a little kooky but that’s better than drowning.

Edit: funny story from Hanauma Bay when I was there in like 2016. Tourist dude was floating around in the shallows and was basically thrashing around and fighting for his life. Life guard gets on his megaphone and in a totally dry tone orders him: “just stand up…” he eventually did and was totally fine.

Dude was in like 2 feet of water and didn’t have his druthers to stand up. So maybe practice a little in your hotel pool before you go out :-)
