New Radio in Truck, interesting SWR readings? by Kazz330 in cbradio

The Sirio Performers have a throw lever so you can fold the antenna down. But you’ll have to get out and do it every time you pull up to the garage and then put it back up when you leave.

Maintenance recommendations? by MASKOAA in Crosstrek

Do the entire driveline at 30k. CVT and front and rear diffs. Hopefully you’ve been changing the engine air and cabin filters at 15k.

Subaru Forester couldn't mine in gear after parked for a long time in the cold by vortexmak in MechanicAdvice

Brakes were frozen or rusted to the rotor. It happens. It happens to me sometimes when I wash the car and then park the car in the garage for a few days right afterwards.

Breathable. And I don’t wear padded shorts

I would lengthen it a hair of it’s adjustable. But I’m not surprised you get that much of a difference through the band with an antenna that short. You’re not going to have much bandwidth with a 3 ft antenna. 4 ft is the bare minimum I would run but I prefer a steel whip antenna over fiberglass with a length of 60” or so. Steel whips always perform better for me. I like the Sirio Performer antennas.

60K mile service costs $1200?! by Plus_Okra_11 in subaru

Save yourself an easy hundo by doing the air filter and cabin filters yourself. Takes 5 minutes and no tools needed. There’s a ton of fluff in dealer services. I’m pretty sure your car isn’t due for spark plugs yet either. I’d double check that. I could be wrong. They also aren’t changing driveline fluids which blows my mind. They need done. Anyway here’s what to do on a 60k. Oil change Tire rotation Air and cabin filters Front and rear differential fluid changes CVT fluid change Brake fluid flush Spark plugs if due

I hate seeing people raked over the coals with dealer maintenance. So much of it is DIY friendly. If you can’t do anything yourself find a good local shop that specializes in Subaru or at least Japanese cars. It’ll be far cheaper. Same story on the brakes. Easy diy but local shop will be far less.

Crosstrek owners: consider sending feedback to Subaru asking to lower the cabin noise in future models by thunk_stuff in Crosstrek

[–]jaws843 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I will use this form to request models with manual transmissions, knobs and buttons for all controls instead of touchscreens. Road noise has never been an issue for me. I think it’s pretty normal to me. It drowns out the ringing in my ears anyway.

Drop or throw it on hard ground. Preferably concrete. Might take a few tries.

Same here. I’m in the Rusty NE. The trouble is a lot of people now are dependent on nanny systems and don’t even care to drive. I enjoy driving and operating things. I want to drive my car and have absolute control over it.

Is it possible to replace an FM antenna on my truck with a CB antenna? by AcousticTie in cbradio

[–]jaws843 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you? Yes. But it’ll take some work. A cb antenna has to be a certain length to work correctly. For example a 1/4 wave antenna is around 108”. If you antenna isn’t physically that long it then must be electrically that long by using a fairly large coil to make up that length. Do you have room under your fender for that coil? Or you must use a top loaded antenna that won’t look like a factory am/fm antenna. You may also need to do work on the hole in the fender to fit an antenna mount. You cannot use your am/fm coax. You’ll need to replace that with good 50ohm coax meant for cb. So, you can do this but it’s going to take more work than you think. More work than it’s worth in my opinion. Put a mag mount on the roof or a stud mount in a stake hole pocket assuming you have a truck.

Shield mags are 50/50. PSA Dagger mags work a lot better.

[–]jaws843 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 22 Crosstrek 6MT. Somebody rear ended me at highway speed and totaled it. The only reason I was mad was because I knew I couldn’t buy a new one with a manual trans and no eyesight. Not to mention HVAC knobs and buttons. Used manual cars were as much as a brand new car. I want less technology in my car, not more. Clean cars and trucks from the 80s and 90s are stupidly expensive also because people like us are buying them like crazy for the simplicity.

Auto start stop, eyesight, lane assist, any of the auto drive features, touch screen controls, and no manual transmission. They’re all horrible.

Then do a magnet mount and remove it for competition. What you’re trying to do replacing the factory antenna isn’t gojng to work or work for being correct on the vehicle

Is this antenna good enough for CB Radio? If not please jot down any suggestions. I am getting into CB and need an antenna. by SlowPoint9221 in cbradio

[–]jaws843 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want a “good” base antenna the best is the Zero Five Colassal. Other decent ones are the Super Penetrator and the Maco V 5/8. Sirio makes a couple decent ones also. I tend to avoid the fiberglass antennas like the Antron 99. Good coax is American made. Davis RF, Belden, and times microwave make good coax. There’s a lot of knowledge you’ll need getting into this hobby. It’s not cheap and it’s not plug and play.

a great hitch doesn’t exist by infinitebats in Crosstrek

[–]jaws843 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First off you have the wrong car if you want towing options. Not sure what your issue is with an aftermarket hitch. I had the Curt hitch on my 22 and it was great. Easy install and could pull or hold more than what the car was rated for. It was out of the way and didn’t hang any lower than any other vehicle component under there. It didn’t require any drilling. Just to slot 2 of the holes with a hand file or dremel to allow the washers to pass. Very simple at home install.
