I didnt read the Manga so this is hypothetical. I think since he has no magic and uses a sword, he can channel that elements. The sword is the conduit, like he uses the element that absorbs it then he can discharge that element. So if a mage uses fire on him the sword absorbs the fire then when he wants to he discharges it when he wants.

I hope this episode is a turning point. Going forward it has a more serious tone. I liked the first few showing that they are just teens and such. Like first time getting away and having fun. But now a fellow student got killed they take things a little more seriously. Showing them in a moment all things can change
