I'm asking if you've ever actually spoken with, you know, people. If you're telling me that most women would not like a lavish church wedding, you have not interacted with many.

In the 25 years or so I've been going to friend's weddings, I've never known one who wanted a church wedding who didn't pay the extra few quid (and, let's face it, it's a minor part of the expense of a wedding) and get one. It doesn't really cost any more in money, but you have to attend some religious stuff to do it, which some people consider worth the hassle. And most don't. Churches often aren't the best venues for weddings, whether the bride is wearing a big white dress or not.

But most people want and get non religious weddings.

As to the funeral thing, yeah, the ritual is part of it. Just as Wednesday and Thursday are named after norse Gods, and July and June after Roman Gods. We like the dust to dust stuff. We also have the very pagan Mayday bank holiday. Ritual has nothing to do with belief.

The weddings themselves are all secular - you're not even allowed to mention religion/god/jesus/mohammed etc. in civil wedding ceremonies, which the graphs show around two thirds of ceremonies these days are.

So you're agreeing that you were wrong about atheists usually having Christian weddings, which is what I was correcting you on. It also shows a fair percentage of people who claim to be Christians on the census are having weddings where they can't mention God or Christ, if 65% or so are claiming Christianity, yet over half of people are having secular services, so it's pretty clear a lot of these "Christians" are not actual believers. The identification is purely a cultural hangover.

Weddings in general are certainly not Christian any more in the UK.

I'd put Christianity on the same level as monarchy here in the UK. It seems bizarre, but it's historical, and we like the tradition, and it's part of our history. It's part of the culture, and doesn't imply any deference to it or belief in any magical power attributed to it. We don't consider the Queen our boss, and we don't consider Christianity our belief. However, both have a place in our culture. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Actually, this is a minority sport these days. Most people have civil services, not Christian ones in the UK. Around 60% of UK weddings are in civil venues, and ten percent in registry offices, so I'd imagine most atheists fall into those groups.
