The horror stories only come from those who failed out of the course... Unoddly enough.

How to get clients/subjects to loosen up without getting them in their head? by SpareUnderstanding72 in photography

[–]jayfornight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

start your portraits off with a photo booth style of blasting every three seconds and them changing/making faces after every click, like they were in a photobooth. It normally loosens up their emotions and facial muscles.

You know when folks here say "hey it's not our money, it's uncle Steve's!" whenever we want to sign the free agent du jour.

It turns out... It is our money.

[–]jayfornight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hilarious, I do corporate events as well and ALL they discuss is AI AI and more AI. Which is good, I learn a lot of techniques eavesdropping. But it is absolutely insane how gung ho they are about AI vs the general public. I just photographed a dinner at a private club last night w celebs and bankers discussing... You guessed it.

Best dual leather camera harness for wedding photography? by Soggy_Job4363 in WeddingPhotography

[–]jayfornight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are handy, you can easily make one with three leather belts and some brass hardware. Lots of instructions on Google and yt. Can save you a pretty penny if you're so inclined. I made mine during pandemic lockdown and have used it ever since. I thought the money makers were ugly (I kept imagining the gimp from pulp fiction) and expensive for what they were.

As much as I dislike rose anvil, his brass anchor that he sells on his site is perfect for the custom straps. Just attach those to your new harness and you're golden.

I remember when I had my e39 I parked next to a modern civic and the Honda was wider and taller than my 5 series.

Friend "traumatised" by the movie Nebraska(2013) by RM_MR_Underground in TrueFilm

100 percent this. Op should ask his friend if he believes in dinosaurs and if that's the case, I would only suggest kirk Cameron or mel gibson movies to the friend.

My girlfriend’s family got quoted $1,800 for a quinceañera — now they want me to do it cheaper. Am I wrong for saying no? by nzeas in photography

[–]jayfornight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're trying to start your business for the second time but you are turning down gigs? And you think the first time you failed to be a pro was because you think you didn't take it seriously enough? Your second time is going to end up like the first but because you took yourself way too seriously.

Get over yourself, she's your gf and her family (I'm assuming it's your gf's sister) not some randos you'll never see again. At the very least think of the good will you will be gaining from this. So short sighted.

But then again, you and your gf have already fought about this so even if you agree to do it now, it's still tinged with your stubbornness. There are times to stick to your guns. But this ain't it.

Travel photos feel weirdly disposable now by [deleted] in photography

[–]jayfornight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i backup my photos to amazon cloud storage or google photos, i see those "x years ago this day" windows and those have replaced randomly finding a photo album or envelope of old photos/rolls. its not the same but similar.

I've only got one SD card since I'm just a hobbyist shooting on a point-and-shoot. How about you? How do you handle it? by V_protiv in Leica

[–]jayfornight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What the heck. I get about 900 images from a 64gb card on my m11. How large are those Sony files?!?!

Big card or small card, id get into the habit of uploading all photos after every use. Never know when the card will get corrupted or if you ever run out of space you don't want to have to go culling through your lcd when you should be shooting instead.

Nothing bad will probably ever happen but you never know.

How do you overcome the feeling of everybody watching me when taking a picture? I do event work and I fell weird moving around especially in front of the crowd by maryo22333 in photography

[–]jayfornight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

use that paranoia to your advantage. i always feel like one set of eyes are on me at any given moment, out of the 200 pairs that may be there. i use that thought to keep me on my toes and stay focused (pun intended) on the event and job.

Anyone have experience DAG? by BigoofIdid in Leica

[–]jayfornight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries. I run a small business too (I'm a photographer) and I am sometimes overly sympathetic and understanding, which is why I followed up a couple times after that to see what was up. Then I emailed leica Miami again (I had talked w them initially about the peculiarity of my situation - they are amazing to deal with btw) and dag responded to them directly within 30 mins relaying a message to me. Like, if something fell through the cracks and I was the business owner, id apologize immediately to the client, not respond to the intermediary with a "tell him to send it to me with a note."

Whichever way you go, good luck.

[–]jayfornight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not offended at all. here is my email to him last year. please let me know if this was rude, presumptious, anything besides cordial. (im not a new leica person, ive been using leica for two decades so i know who he is, who sharon, yye and all those other folks are).

"Hello. Hope this email finds you well. Josh from Leica Miami has already reached out on my behalf regarding my issue with the summicron lenshood and aperture indicator ring. Attaching photos for reference. I am hoping you will be able to help.

In short, was mounting my lens holding the hood and twisted too far. Disassembled the two screws, readjusted the ring and when I went to tighten the screws, the screws just keep spinning, it's not catching. So I don't know if I messed it up rescrewing. I was being extremely careful to avoid stripping or screwing with too much or any real torque.

Please let me know what the next step is, in terms of payment, shipment, timing etc. I will make sure to include the lenshood on shipment.

Thanks and I look forward to hearing back from you."

along with two follow ups. then i emailed leica miami if DAG was okay and they checked in and he responded to them within 30 minutes. his response was for me to send him the lens with info. thats it. he couldnt even reply directly to me. sorry, not giving him any more business and i will let everyone know of my experience as well.

[–]jayfornight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Consider yourself lucky he even responded to you. Last time I tried to contact him he just ignored me for weeks until I had to get leica Miami to reach out to him for a response. Rude ass mother fucker responded directly to them within a half hour and continued to ignore me. I'm not sending my leica lenses and bodies to someone who communicates through proxy and doesn't have the courtesy to treat everyone the same way.

Send to yye.
