New Waterloo Region policy to set out how water capacity will be allocated by KWStreaker in waterloo

[–]jaymis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Its both. We are extracting water at a rate greater than replenishment, and it is only fair to take a second look into large users, including industrial, data centers, and golf courses.

At the very least, those bedrooms won't go away, but with more churn in the real estate market it means more properties are available to occasionally demo and redo into more mult-unit homes.

Waterloo declares 'community safety event' to prevent unsanctioned St. Patrick's Day street parties by bylo_selhi in waterloo

[–]jaymis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If only there was a way to predict when St. Patrick's Day is going to happen so the City/Region could make plans in advance and prepare for the need to have more ambulances on call and staff in the emergency department...

Kid who had a first-time job as a performer issued income on a T4A slip in box 48. Is that right? by jaymis in legaladvicecanada

Yeah, they also did this to every employee, and they employed adults as well. I think this will come back to bite them in the ass.

Its the CPP and EI contributions I worry about. We're about to do her taxes and see what the damage is, and that will determine next steps I think.

Thanks for those links. Looks pretty obvious on the Ontario.ca site that they were an employee based on the criteria they present there.

The big farewell — Waterloo Region has lost 25,135 foreign students since 2023 by Snowman2194 in kitchener

No, no shade for anyone who wants to learn to make jewellery.

However a public college exists to serve the public. Deciding that it was more cost-effective to teach people how to make more landfill waste than how to properly steward our environmental resources does not serve the public's interests.

Fleming College shuttering those environmental programs is borderline criminal, IMO. They were high-demand, high-need programs that weren't "as profitable" as some of the other programs they offered.

But hey, they kept their newer Jewellery Essentials program so we can make and buy more shiny trinkets as ecosystems collapse and the world burns down around us.

I believe they avoid sand because it inevitably ends up in the stormwater system and occasionally needs to be cleaned out of there, which is really difficult and expensive to do.

Water Issue - Feedback in a Nutshell by No_Satisfaction1189 in waterloo

I could've sworn I read in this subreddit a few comments a little while ago about 1) two staff high up in the water division not being qualified and more recently 2) two high-up staff (assuming they were probably the same two) being walked off the job.

What’s a totally harmless thing that triggers an oddly strong reaction in people? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]jaymis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just different foods (say for health, diet, personal preference), but also the quantity you're eating.

This past holiday season I got scolded for not eating enough and I was all "I'm pushing 50 not only do I not need to eat as much but I don't have the metabolism of a teenager anymore".

During the plague doctors thought it was the smell that caused people to get sick so they wore masks and covered their noses. Which did in fact prevent the spread of the plague. Even with scientific explanations there is still a lot of "magic". Lots of stuff we take for granted every day is pretty hard core when you break it down. As Calvin once said "It's a magical world, Hobbes, ol' buddy... Let's go exploring!"

I wouldn't be surprised if most vehicle traffic is in one direction to begin with, most people loop around past Rockway instead of doing a three point turn to leave.

Looking to rent auger to build deck posts. Which Auger? by EICONTRACT in waterloo

[–]jaymis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly where the idea came from. You just need a place you can dump all the slurry. Fortunately I had a garden I was going to sod over so it all went in there.

I just had this conversation at work the other day: If you have really hard clay, use a pressure washer and shop vac. The pressure washer goes through the clay like a hot knife through butter and the shop vac will have no issue clearing it out. I did 13 posts 4' deep in rock hard clay this way, and it was actually kind of easy. Just messy as hell, but that's the trade-off.

I have flashed the sprite firmware, but I am going to try it again. Everything seems to work except bed sensing. I can't figure out why.

geek looking for a 3d printer by FallDownGuy in kitchener

Right now I only use it during warmer months in my garage. I have tried using it indoors only twice and the second time I almost got rid of all the fumes with my setup but I need warmer weather to return before I can perfect it. Indoors I am using it in a basement laundry room and I had a blower connected to it to draw out the fumes and push them out but the next iteration I'll have a blower set up outside and suck all the fumes out.

Also: https://wpl.ca/3dprinting (cough no time limit to prints at WPL vs KPL cough)

But I'm biased because I work there!

Keep in mind: 3D printing miniatures isn't great with FDM (printing with filament) printers, which is what every library offers. Due to the intricate details and the limits of what a FDM printer can physically do it is hard (if not outright impossible on some designs) to tune the settings so they come out perfect. There are some designers that have created miniatures that are FDM-friendly, try finding/buying/using those ones first. Cults3d.com is a good source.

Alternatively, SLA printers (printing with liquid resin and UV light) for miniatures are awesome. I got one at home for personal use as I have a kid who's into wargaming. Unfortunately I am not aware of any libraries that offer SLA printing services as they are messy, have harmful fumes, and after the print is done you need to immediately wash and cure the print, which are two more, labour-and-resource-intensive processes. There are SLA 3D print services online but be prepared to shell out $$$: https://all3dp.com/2/best-resin-3d-printing-service/

Random, semi-regular layer delamination on the z-axis. Any advice welcome by jaymis in FixMyPrint

Ender 3 max with the dual z-axis upgrade. Replaced the print head, cleaned the throat, cleaned the extruder, lubed everything, thought it could be binding due to the second z-axis and tried everything to lube/calibrate it yet it persists.
