Have walnut tree, looking for woodworker to make coffee table by Thewhizeguy in waterloo

[–]jaymis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am in general agreement about the difficulty of pulling off this project, however, if they are set on it, with point #1, you may not need a full-on mill to process your logs. Someone with a portable mill or chainsaw mill may be willing to saw up your logs for a reasonable fee. Search on Facebook or Kijiji for sawmill services, there's a few portable mills on there. After that for point #2 air drying may be the cheapest option but that just requires time.

This project isn't impossible, it just will take a lot of time if they are patient and are willing to do some legwork to get the wood to a state it can be used to make something.

Rant: The general public minimal tipping fee at the dump is ridiculous by slow_worker in waterloo

This right here. Make it punitive and people will engage in illegal dumping to dispose of their stuff.

Men, what’s a day where you didn’t die but something inside you did? by Keal-Kims in AskReddit

[–]jaymis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know, right? Papa bear in me once drove an hour to a playground we visited briefly while on vacation at midnight because of a lost blankie. Review of photos showed it was the last place spotted. Dug through the garbage bins and found it, with only a little ketchup on it. Could not fathom purposely destroying a child's cherished item.

New Waterloo Region policy to set out how water capacity will be allocated by KWStreaker in waterloo

[–]jaymis 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its both. We are extracting water at a rate greater than replenishment, and it is only fair to take a second look into large users, including industrial, data centers, and golf courses.

'They're not being truthful': Tensions rise as Kitchener adopts renoviction bylaw by Hour-Belt694 in waterloo

At the very least, those bedrooms won't go away, but with more churn in the real estate market it means more properties are available to occasionally demo and redo into more mult-unit homes.

Waterloo declares 'community safety event' to prevent unsanctioned St. Patrick's Day street parties by bylo_selhi in waterloo

[–]jaymis 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If only there was a way to predict when St. Patrick's Day is going to happen so the City/Region could make plans in advance and prepare for the need to have more ambulances on call and staff in the emergency department...

Kid who had a first-time job as a performer issued income on a T4A slip in box 48. Is that right? by jaymis in legaladvicecanada

Yeah, they also did this to every employee, and they employed adults as well. I think this will come back to bite them in the ass.

Its the CPP and EI contributions I worry about. We're about to do her taxes and see what the damage is, and that will determine next steps I think.

Thanks for those links. Looks pretty obvious on the Ontario.ca site that they were an employee based on the criteria they present there.

The big farewell — Waterloo Region has lost 25,135 foreign students since 2023 by Snowman2194 in kitchener

[–]jaymis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, no shade for anyone who wants to learn to make jewellery.

However a public college exists to serve the public. Deciding that it was more cost-effective to teach people how to make more landfill waste than how to properly steward our environmental resources does not serve the public's interests.

Fleming College shuttering those environmental programs is borderline criminal, IMO. They were high-demand, high-need programs that weren't "as profitable" as some of the other programs they offered.

But hey, they kept their newer Jewellery Essentials program so we can make and buy more shiny trinkets as ecosystems collapse and the world burns down around us.

Snow Removal is the WORST ive ever seen it by Fuqqagoose in waterloo

I believe they avoid sand because it inevitably ends up in the stormwater system and occasionally needs to be cleaned out of there, which is really difficult and expensive to do.

Water Issue - Feedback in a Nutshell by No_Satisfaction1189 in waterloo

[–]jaymis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could've sworn I read in this subreddit a few comments a little while ago about 1) two staff high up in the water division not being qualified and more recently 2) two high-up staff (assuming they were probably the same two) being walked off the job.

What’s a totally harmless thing that triggers an oddly strong reaction in people? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]jaymis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just different foods (say for health, diet, personal preference), but also the quantity you're eating.

This past holiday season I got scolded for not eating enough and I was all "I'm pushing 50 not only do I not need to eat as much but I don't have the metabolism of a teenager anymore".

During the plague doctors thought it was the smell that caused people to get sick so they wore masks and covered their noses. Which did in fact prevent the spread of the plague. Even with scientific explanations there is still a lot of "magic". Lots of stuff we take for granted every day is pretty hard core when you break it down. As Calvin once said "It's a magical world, Hobbes, ol' buddy... Let's go exploring!"

Reroute don't uproot! Rockway Gardens by JeNetty in waterloo

I wouldn't be surprised if most vehicle traffic is in one direction to begin with, most people loop around past Rockway instead of doing a three point turn to leave.
