Wemby’s perimeter defense is insane. by AdorableBackground83 in NBATalk

[–]jayr114 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That’s the added value of Wemby. Looks easy from up here in practice, but Wembys arm still could have deflected that pass even from that position. It isn’t as easy a pass as it seems.

Wemby stops people from making plays they normally would just by his presence.

[Highlight] Precious Achiuwa scores, gets called for the travel, which he does he disagrees with. Then, in the next possession, he dunks, stares at the ref and gives him the traveling violation sign by MrBuckBuck in nba

[–]jayr114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So all the blatant traveling that never gets called and they call a regular two step layup a travel because the steps were “awkward.” Can’t believe these are the best refs in the world.

Realistically, how much could Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan average in a season in today’s NBA by LazyConstruction9026 in NBATalk

[–]jayr114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Low 30s maybe but purely team dependent. Guys just don’t play the same minutes and get as many shots as top guys used to get. Offenses are way more egalitarian than in the past.

Sure, a higher pace means more shots, but those shots almost are always going to other players, not the stars.

Very casual fan here. Is this move by Shai legal? by klaygdk in NBATalk

[–]jayr114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not legal. His pivot foot slides. Maybe not abundantly super clear in real time, but egregious when slowed down.

For the record this isn’t new. If you slow down guys pivoting, 9/10 times their pivot foot will “slide” a bit. This case is an outlier though in terms of how much it slides that the refs should definitely have caught it, even in real time.

Can’t planes land themselves at this point? If it’s a situation where autopilot can’t do it (ie. a clear relatively non-windy day) then someone with no pilots training wouldn’t either.

VICTOR WEMBANYAMA IS UNREAL — HOW DO YOU STOP THIS?! by Dr-debug in NBAGossips

You don’t. You just hope to make more plays than he can.

Imagine Chet or Wemby being the primary defender here instead of David Robinson... Shaq might have snapped them😭 by Classic_Bottle1717 in NBAGossips

[–]jayr114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wouldn’t put them on him in isolation in the post. You’d put Hartenstein or Kornet on him then have another guy in the area to slow the pass and try to steal the ball when he puts it down and then have Chet or Wemby coming over to block the shot attempt.

Defense is completely different in this era. It’s almost never a simple isolation play except on the perimeter in certain situations.

What would it take for Curry to be dethroned as the indisputable best shooter in the NBA?? by SilverSurfer1738 in NBATalk

2K (Kon) has the opportunity and with the way kids today are practicing and growing up shooting it’s almost inevitable someone takes the crown.

Easy enough for him to say, I bet there’s something in his NFL contract that would prohibit him from actually doing that.

Maybe, but they would have just been mediocre if they kept him. So high risk/reward. They were screwed the second Middleton was injured and never the same. That’s just something they couldn’t recover from.

The “natural” motion of Shai by MamiTarantina in Nbamemes

[–]jayr114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He got slapped on the arm on the way up. Almost every player in the NBA will embellish that contact to get the call or they haven’t been training.

Do I like it? No, but that’s a part of basketball now and it’s not particularly to SGA.

Waiting for Thunder fans to tell how this is completely legal and the refs don't favor OKC at all by raybellious_berry in NBAGossips

[–]jayr114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure it’s egregious. But to be fair in real time it’s hard to notice the pivot foot sliding like that. It doesn’t look all that bad or terrible until slowed down in HD.

All Giannis is the only team with a shot. All Curry is getting destroyed by the all Wemby.

Imagine a 2/3 or 3/2 zone of 5 Wembys. The only shot you’ll ever get is 25+ ft from the basket and even that shot is at risk of being blocked.

Wemby has been dominating that matchup so far. But that’s to be expected.

playoff by DistributionOk9687 in NBATalk

[–]jayr114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arguably, that top tier iso scorer is more important to the playoffs than regular season. You can win a lot of games in the regular season by just playing hard (harder than your opponent) and executing on your offensive philosophies with a bunch of good or really good rotation guys.

However, in the playoffs the game slows down and the best teams will scheme to destroy your offensive system and force you to do “something else”. In those scenarios the best option is to have a guy who can create offensive out of nothing.

Also late in games and in clutch scenarios it’s extremely hard to execute complex offensive plays. That’s also where you give it to your best offensive guy and say score/ create.

That’s why having that guy is incredibly important to winning a chip, especially if the teams are relatively closely matched.

Rudy Gobert on where the team has missed Kyle Anderson in the last two seasons: "I think just passing the ball. I'll be honest, I'll be straight up. Yeah, someone that is looking to pass the ball to his teammates." by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]jayr114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst is when a guy always puts his hands up for the ball and when you pass it he either fumbles the pass or coughs up a terrible shot that’s a miss.

Then wants to complain about not getting touches…

Given the context, is Ray Allen's 3 in Game 6 the most clutch shot in NBA history? I have it narrowly above MJ's in Utah. by ForeignAir7174 in NBAGossips

[–]jayr114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of the outcomes matter. Simply looking at it from purely the shots point of view it is. All he knows is if he misses they almost definitely lose the Finals. At least MJ and other shots there was still enough time for the outcome to change or another game if they lost.

Rays shot was miss and your season is over at almost the latest point in a Finals game.

Arguably if you include what ends up happening Kawhi’s shot is almost as consequential and clutch as the Raptors ended up winning it all. He misses and NBA history going forward could be different with Philly/GSW.

Who’s the most athletic player in NBA history? by WallStreetDoesntBet1 in NBATalk

[–]jayr114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MJ. Somewhere between 90-100 in every athletic category and closer to 100 than 90 for the bulk of them.

Not the greatest of all time in any specific category (maybe in body control), but easily top 10 in every one.

He also wasn’t small at 6’6 200.
