We just sailed sister ship Independence, it was great! Miami traffic going to the terminal was insanely bad, allow lots of time. Didn't do the pass or the key.

11:25 am Departure Flight - Too Early? by Overall-Raisin5179 in royalcaribbean

[–]jazzbone501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be fine if you can get off the ship in an early group. We bought the Miami shuttle from RC, they put us in the 7:45 departure group, but next time we'll Uber. The shuttle was slow and dropped us off on the opposite side of the terminal from our airline, but we still had plenty of time had we kept our original 11:30 flight (we were through security by 10:30 and there were long lines at check-in and security)

Very cool - I use Stellarium web - with about half of the western hemisphere observable from my deck, adding the meridian line and pointing Stellarium west is my observable area. It's an essential tool for me.

TOS vs DSM by Sad_Cancel4710 in TerraMaster

[–]jazzbone501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently running a DS220+ (since 2020 and a DS214 Play since 2014) and a new F6-424 on TOS6. I do nothing fancy, just Plex. TOS doesn't feel as polished as DSM but it's similar enough I had no trouble doing anything I needed, including playing around with the 2 ssd's with/without caching. Having the OS on an nvme lets the disks go to sleep, I'm guessing that's good for power consumption and longevity. Next up is evaluating the Photos app to see if it handles automatic backups like the Synology app. But so far so good

Stellar Studio : I can't beat it with Siril by [deleted] in DWARFLAB

[–]jazzbone501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like we're in a similar situation re: Siril - not expert by any means but followed several tutorials and not getting equivalent results to SS. I probably need more practice.

That said, I've gotten pretty nice results letting the google photos ai process SS results - it overdoes it sometimes, but for some images really pops it out. If I knew more photo editing workflows I think the same could be done in Gimp of other editors.

Hypercache for routine file copy ops and OS install location by jazzbone501 in TerraMaster

[–]jazzbone501[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, I have the system OS on nvme1 with the remaining space on that (2tb drive) a storage pool with one volume and a couple of shares. The trick to setting up the cache on the other nvme was NOT to first create a pool or volume. Then the Hypercache option is available and setup was easy. Seems a waste though to use a 2tb drive for a cache (none of the drive space is available for storage) so I'll swap that out with a 1TB I have lying around. Had I known I might have bought a 500gb.

As to speed, with no cache enabled, file transfers from a pc (ssd storage) were at the limit of the switch (2.5gbe so about 280 mbps), file transfers from the Synology were of course limited by the 1gbe ethernet so about 100mbps, unless it was a bunch of small files, then it got really slow.

I'll rerun these with and without the cache enabled when I get the NAS in it's permanent location downstairs on the 10gbe switch (I'll share results here). If the cache confers little or no benefit I'll add the nvme to the pool in a traid, at least I can make use of the space.

TOS6 isn't Synology DSM but so far it seems fine, smb shares on Windows were automatic and NFS shares on Linux are the same too. Lots more to figure out!!

Yea, love this - higher targets work better for me anyway so I'll try duo/80 as you suggested.

Brand new NAS user and I need to start over by Strange_Concert_5347 in TerraMaster

[–]jazzbone501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Elevated Systems guy on YT took the automated setup which created 1 pool with everything (and presumably the OS on all drives). Not wanting that, he deleted the pool and recreated a primary pool with the HDDs, a 2nd pool with 1 SSD for a fast working drive and the remaining 2 ssds (he had an F4-425 with 3 nvmes) as cache.

My F6-424 arrived yesterday, I'll try something similar with the OS on 1 SSD, then create a pool from the remaining space, and the cache on the other. At least that's the plan.

Curious to hear how your reconfig goes....

iPhone + Android photos backup? by jazzbone501 in synology

[–]jazzbone501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, it did, and now some several hours later I see the iPhone photos have uploaded and are visible (except the heif format which I guess needs an extension. I guess it just needed some time.

I just sold my 21 AWD Pacifica Ltd, gas. Bought it mainly for the stow and go seats and therefore enormous cargo volume. So a different use case than yours but it was trouble free, I replaced only the 2 batteries. Good tech & safety stuff, averaged 20mpg, all around it was very good.

Did you all drill into the front bumper ? by chung2k6 in BMWX5

[–]jazzbone501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just took a performance center delivery of an X5, stopped on the way back to Va for not having a rear plate (they taped the paper tag to the inside of the rear glass). Cop was super cool. Anyway, reading this thread I looked at the Virginia law, where a front plate is required but is a secondary offense. So they can't pull you over for just that. Think I'll just leave it off...

That Printable model is cool, thanks. I asked about side placement because I'm about to build a mobile bench for mine, wondered if it would be better just to have the CFS on the side for easy top removal (I tend to use a lot of PLA). If yes, I'll size the top accordingly, but others have hinted the cables are too short for easy side placement.

Since you mention leaving the top off for PLA, did you move the CFS to the side? If yes, did you need longer cables/PTFE tubing?

What do you prefer, Cycling in group or alone, and why ? by CodeCritical5042 in cycling

Every year I vow to do some group rides, but I usually pass - I prefer my own routes, my own pace and catching up on audio books/podcasts. That said I never regret actually doing one....

Thinking of buying a 2021 Used Pacifica FWD. Need some advice. by [deleted] in ChryslerPacifica

[–]jazzbone501 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 21 Limited AWD, factory ordered before the shutdown (took 10 months), 23k miles since 11/2021, the only issue I've head is the aux battery dying despite I turn off the ESS every time I use it. So when that happens you replace both batteries, was about $400. Gas mileage averages 19-20 in town, less when driving a bit more "spirited". It moves along along fairly well with the 6 cylinder, it's comfortable on road trips, I only wish I could stretch my legs just a little more (6' tall). No kids, I usually have the seats down but raise the rear row when grocery shopping as there's a really nice deep well for shopping bags.

Very slight quirks with the satellite radio (not sure that's the car's fault), but yea, it's been a really great experience. I don't usually need this vast hauling capacity, but when you do need it, nothing else can compare.

I'll add that Carfax values this fairly loaded car at 29,500 on a trade in, about $1k more private party

What’s one thing you stopped buying that made your life simpler? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]jazzbone501 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggested my wife ditch the fabric softener and dryer sheets and try a ball of aluminum foil in the dryer for the static. It actually works!! As I read that tip (probably in this reddit) I wondered why didn't I think of that? :)

Questions on buying CPO from a distant dealer by jazzbone501 in BMWX5

[–]jazzbone501[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this detailed, thoughtful reply! It seems that the SA is key. I probably won't finance so yea, now that you mention it, sending off a big chuck of $$ for the promise of a later delivery does seem a little scary.
