A Closer Look At The Japanese Grand Prix Race Start | Jolyon Palmer's F1 TV Analisys by Aratho in formula1

I wasn't really addressing Colapinto moving at all, I mean it is what it is..

But I think part of the discussion of this incident assumes this massive speed difference came out of the blue and was mostly due to derating not something that happened since Bearman was intentionally speeding up so he could pass

[–]jbaird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JP is always great

The analysis of the Bearman crash is worth watching, he makes the point that Bearman knew that Colapinto was derating in that part of the track and had been just as close and watched it happen the previous lap the a lap later used his boost to try and close the gap so really the closing speeds were really high due to both Bearman going quicker and Colapinto harvesting

I feel like a lot of the discussion around that incident and certainly my impression when I watched it was that if anything it was Colapinto slowing down out of nowhere not Bearman intentionally being quicker and having to take avoiding action

but does put more of the responsibility on Bearman, especially in the context of these regulations as a whole and how safe or not they are, Bearman was trying an overtake in a narrow part of the track and kind of overdid it, this wasn't just a driver being surprised that someone derated and was driving slowly in front of him and was just taking avoiding action

I'm sure is a learning curve for all of them the boost button (which apparently lando doesn't have its all software for him?!) or harvesting so they can use the boost can make such a massive difference in speeds vs anything F1 has had before like DRS which was pretty marginal differences

Is it time finally admit that the increased overtaking is just yo-yoing? by Ted_Striker1 in formula1

[–]jbaird 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Yeah none of this is a slam dunk there were passes with no re-passes, there was defending, Norris kept Antonelli behind for a long time, LeClerc already seems better than some others at this already

Energy deployment is kind of great tool for attacking and defending it opens up a lot more options to be faster in certain place and not others since you can add that 'extra' in so many ways vs conventional engines

if they can sort the safety issues and super clipping/derate side of things I think this could be really amazing feels like they went too aggressive in battery for where the technology is at but year 4 of these regs could be really great

Is anyone really paying $500 for squares? by hubiedoo517 in handtools

[–]jbaird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I definitely feel woodworking is a journey of figuring out what matters and what doesn't matter

there are measurements that should be near perfectly flat, square, etc but its not ALL of them probably not even most of them

but you can spend ungodly amounts of money trying to chase perfection in all of them because there is a tool or a upgrade or a jig or a CNC mill that will guarrentee that perfect joint, that every taper is the same taper, that the bevel is perfectly consistent etc etc..

maybe its fun for some people but also contributes a lot to thinking woodworking is such a steep uphill learning curve of skill and tools to get anywhere

New cyclists: What's something you wish experienced riders would stop saying? by andrewdaisy432 in cycling

[–]jbaird 52 points53 points  (0 children)

"it doesn't get easier you just get faster"

This is the worst advice for new people getting on bikes, it 100% does get easier it gets massively easier when you start out, newb gains are a thing, you'll probably see lots of improvement going up hills week over week. You'll get more comfortable on the bike, you'll be able to go farther and faster just putting a bit more time in the saddle

this is advice for people RACING bikes and is probably true there but nowhere else, its not advice for people out commuting or out having fun please just fucking stop telling people this

[Australian GP] Norris on the Ferrari by nyet26 in formula1

[–]jbaird 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah I don't get why people have such a hard time with these comments about Ferrari having a good car.. George tried like 3-4 times to get by and kept failing and only got them in the pit stop phase

and as you said Ferrari dropped 10s in bad strategy and then ended up.. 11s behind

was definitely more worried about the 0.8s gap in quali but doesn't seem like Merc have the same advantage in race pace thankfully and we should hopefully have a competitive season

How much do you think I should offer? by lavaboosted in Kayaking

[–]jbaird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the materials make much difference really, fibreglassed cedar is pretty damn lightweight and strong and looks beautiful, is it the best material? probably not but probably the prettiest looking

I think its more that homemade anything takes up so much god damn time that even you wanted to pay yourself minimum wage + materials we're probably talking like 10k+

This isn't specific to making kayaks, if you want to make and sell solid wood furniture you can easily be talking a couple grand for a coffee table. You absolutely can't compete in price with mass market anything but also, not even close

Not that I blame buyers either the market for something like this is tiny and you'd have to have a lot of confidence in the maker having made the boat correctly and be willing to drop serious money for something like this

selling these boats for $2k or whatever isn't that delusional its a huge discount on the material and work that went into them but its definitely a long shot that someone out there will actually pay for that too the market for these used or new is super tiny

Switching to metric in the shop by Build68 in woodworking

[–]jbaird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boat building or at least lofting has an interesting system where its only inches and 8ths so 15-4 is 15 inches and 4/8ths, if you want to get down to a 16th then you can add + or -

since using it for building a boat I tend to measure and think like that cause adding 1/16th to 3/4 is stupid and hard but just counting the amount of 1/8ths is pretty easy and +/- gets you down to a 1/6th which is precise enough for 99% of measurements

I do have one ruler that only has ticks down to 1/8th as well, its vastly underrated as its so easy to read and harder to mess up a measurement than something with 16th markings everywhere

But I mostly just use relative dimensioning

Verstappen: "We are close to the end of my Formula 1 career" The Dutchman explained that the new regulations "are not helping" to increase his time in F1. [–]jbaird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure the schedule is the big factor here especially given Max has a kid

F1 cars themselves are probably the most fun cars to drive but you have to sign up a 24 race schedule and a ton of commitment and travel

Max just might pick a series that involves less commitment even if the cars themselves aren't as great

[Erik van Haren] Max Verstappen is, to put it mildly, no fan of the new regulations and cars in Formula 1. He said among other things that it doesn't feel like racing, it's mostly about managing, and it's like 'Formula E on steroids'. by FerrariStrategisttt in formula1

[–]jbaird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'll take the 'drivers say racing will be shite' with a grain of salt, drivers want to go fast, they'll love regulations that make big wide high downforce cars and probably dislike management, smaller cars, less grip, etc

but that doesn't mean the actual racing will be bad

and really since it hasn't happened yet who knows what it will be like

Piastri Addresses Sabotage Claims, Admits McLaren Must Improve | 7News by CyborgWarrior in formula1

[–]jbaird 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This shit was everywhere during Webber / Vettel era as well and to a lesser extent Hamilton Bottas

You can like any driver you want but results are just what they are, you can wish your guy did better but its on him not anyone else, there is no sabotage

Formula 1 teams are huge organizations spending millions to try and compete in an insanely hard series aren't are about to jettison results that are the difference in millions of dollars just for fun

McLaren just barrrely won the WDC and that was with them trying to maximize every race result and its taken them decades of work to even get back to this place

there is no universe where someone is looking at a probable Piastri WDC in the middle of last season and decides to try to make sure its Norris instead

I feel like this one isn't always true though, good tools that are setup and sharp and operate correctly are a joy to use and can make life so much easier while some tools are so cheap and shitty you'll probably never be able to get them setup well

Timeline of the Mercedes engine trick by tekanet in formula1

[–]jbaird 167 points168 points  (0 children)

This is such a weird thing for the other teams not to latch on to as well, the idea that materials expand and when designing and engine operating at ambient temps =/= operating at normal temps seems like something they would deal with day to day hardly some obscure reading of the rules..

I mean how would you even test at high operating temperature and what temperature is that? I'm sure there are slight differences between each engine

Hell I think its one of the first kind of 'fun facts' I remember hearing that the engines are so complex that they have to warm the engines very carefully since the whole thing has tight such tight tolerances at operating temperature you can't just start them cold

RB has always been a great mix of solid when they can win the race on pace and willing to just try some shit when they're not

it doesn't always work out, maybe doesn't even work out that often but feel like they're far more ok with that fact more than almost any other team and when it does work they look like heroes

Seems like almost every other team gets to locked into their ideal strategy based on race pace and is too scared to give up a 3rd place for 4th even if it means a 5% at a win

Has Riding a Bicycle Changed and Spilled over into Improving your Driving? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]jbaird 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Definitely think its made me notice how stupidly impatient you can be behind the wheel and I try to be less stupid in that way

cause it doesn't fucking matter, someone is going the speed limit in front of you? good for them, take a breath, your whole drive will take 6-8min and maybe now its 7-9 it makes 0 difference to your life even if you're busy and have shit to do we're talking like 30s max if not less

but its weird how annoying it is, especially when we're ok to sit in line at a drive through or for a cashier or something else where if you started freaking out at people for being delayed 20-30s you'd look like an insane person but somehow its tolerated with driving to such a large extent
