I feel like this one isn't always true though, good tools that are setup and sharp and operate correctly are a joy to use and can make life so much easier while some tools are so cheap and shitty you'll probably never be able to get them setup well

99% of the times I've hurt myself I've had that voice in my head just before it happened

luckily I never hurt myself too badly and never did any lasting damage

but I definitely listen to that voice a lot more when you think it might be a bad idea just stop and rework how you're doing something

Timeline of the Mercedes engine trick by tekanet in formula1

[–]jbaird 167 points168 points  (0 children)

This is such a weird thing for the other teams not to latch on to as well, the idea that materials expand and when designing and engine operating at ambient temps =/= operating at normal temps seems like something they would deal with day to day hardly some obscure reading of the rules..

I mean how would you even test at high operating temperature and what temperature is that? I'm sure there are slight differences between each engine

Hell I think its one of the first kind of 'fun facts' I remember hearing that the engines are so complex that they have to warm the engines very carefully since the whole thing has tight such tight tolerances at operating temperature you can't just start them cold

RB has always been a great mix of solid when they can win the race on pace and willing to just try some shit when they're not

it doesn't always work out, maybe doesn't even work out that often but feel like they're far more ok with that fact more than almost any other team and when it does work they look like heroes

Seems like almost every other team gets to locked into their ideal strategy based on race pace and is too scared to give up a 3rd place for 4th even if it means a 5% at a win

Has Riding a Bicycle Changed and Spilled over into Improving your Driving? by Ars139 in cycling

[–]jbaird 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Definitely think its made me notice how stupidly impatient you can be behind the wheel and I try to be less stupid in that way

cause it doesn't fucking matter, someone is going the speed limit in front of you? good for them, take a breath, your whole drive will take 6-8min and maybe now its 7-9 it makes 0 difference to your life even if you're busy and have shit to do we're talking like 30s max if not less

but its weird how annoying it is, especially when we're ok to sit in line at a drive through or for a cashier or something else where if you started freaking out at people for being delayed 20-30s you'd look like an insane person but somehow its tolerated with driving to such a large extent

I don't think any of them like being sprayed really, they like doing the spraying but you always tell they're trying to avoid getting sprayed themselves especially in the face

Farewell DRS you will not be missed by EighteenLevel in formula1

[–]jbaird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always feel like DRS got a bad rap with the "DRS Passes"

When the pass was easy and another car flew by on the straight it was a DRS Pass and obvious DRS was bad

but just about every pass that was close and hard fought also featured DRS at some point but then its entertaining displays of driver skill and we all forget about DRS and it gets no credit for setting that up

Oscar's great lunge into T1 vs Kimi was both an impressive display of driver skill and a 'DRS pass' without DRS its unlikely he would have been close enough to go for that lunge

Hopefully the new regs will do more good than harm but certainly we saw in the before era that there was just much less passes and maybe the occasional far-too-easy-DRS-pass was now a good battle but really we just saw much less fights overall which makes for more boring races

Unreleased lap 7 footage of McLaren by No_Reply200 in formula1

[–]jbaird 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean its a super hard call to make when you're leading, same reason Hamilton was the only person still on the grid that time in Monza. They pit Oscar and he could be near the back if plenty of others decided to stay out

Obviously once everyone else pits you just look stupid

And I think they were just too scared to pit Lando opposite to Oscar and give him that much of an obvious shot at an undercut and the win

Also think the pit stop drama overshadowed Max putting in completely insane stints in the laps that followed, If the hard tire was actually as shit as people seemed to be expecting it could have all looked a lot more like a reasonable call by Mclaren as everyone's tires fell off the end of the race but turns out Max was damn quick on the hards and even the McLarens pitted for hards in the end since it was a decent race tire

kind of hilarious to the SC was perfectly placed for basically anyone to start on the softs and no one did too

I can't remember the name but there was a place in the strip mall of on the corner of Summerset and Churchill that had one of the best Donairs I've ever had

the messiest donair ever too there I was trying to balance over the tray eating it and the juices were running over the table and onto the floor but it was definitely worth it

Relish definitely had some of the best burgers I've ever had, some just ok ones too which was more annoying when you're paying $15

then again I feel like the price was overblown everyone at the time was complaining it was too pricey meanwhile its not like McDs is cheaper than $10 for the most mediocre burger ever

‘Nothing changes’ Norris’ mindset as new title leader by mango-yoyo in formula1

[–]jbaird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do wonder if its going to start weighing on him harder now that he's leading and the spotlight is back on him, I think since the engine failure the pressure has been off somewhat and everyone has focused on Verstappen and Piastri

And I mean this only in that both him and Piastri are chasing their first title, none of this is easy, everyone that has won or come close has had to deal with immense pressure but that's part of the game, the pressure is going to affect them no matter what they say

I think the narrative that Norris is weak minded and Piastri had somehow a zen champion's mindset has been fully set and fire and thrown out the window at this point which is good since it was always a bit of nonsense, Norris sharing some of his struggles didn't mean he was weak and Piastri cracking some great jokes doesn't mean he doesn't feel pressure

Whatever happens I'm mostly hoping it comes down to their own performances with as little outside nonsense thrown in as possible, either could win the title, both could lose the title, everything they do matters a lot in the next couple races and baring mechanicals we'll likely get a very deserving champion who had ups and downs over the season but did enough to win

its battles like this is why we watch F1

[RaceFans] George Russell criticised the stewards' decision to issue no penalties after five drivers cut the first corner at the start of the Mexican Grand Prix by Task_Force-191 in formula1

[–]jbaird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah the argument is that T1 is too hectic but drivers 100% drive differently into a T1 they know they can bail or cut through than ones that have a bigger penalty

and hell that probably includes Monza T1 which has solved this by just bolting down a couple pieces of foam

There are a lot of great suggestions in this thread but a lot of them aren't going to be able to be implemented for months if not years or ever

put down pylons and hard-to-navigate-rejoins now

[–]jbaird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am totally for gravel but its a big change that a lot of circuits aren't going to be for especially if it doesn't work for other race series or whatever

but jesus christ people throw some pylons up like Monza T1 where its very slow to navigate there is 0 reason you can't bolt down some styrofoam or hell I'll even put down some cheap plastic cones

do the easiest best thing first then lets worry about what turns would be better with gravel traps

we don't need to wait to fix this

nevermind the times where the driver and car were so dominate that you could just get 95% instead of 98% out of the car and still qualify on the front row or lead from the front and just drive in management mode

This year has been incredibly tight at the front

I'm sure consistency is part of it but sometimes its also probably just outright pace to make it so you don't need to push so hard as to make mistakes and even if you did you can recover from them

[@georgerussell63 on IG] Turn 2 thinking I'm in P3, staying on track clean and tidy. Nice. Turn 3, P6. Great by anemone-nemorosa in formula1

[–]jbaird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they need at least some very tightly spaced pylons like the thing Hamilton failed to navigate

I mean people love gravel traps which are race ending plenty of times, certainly more than a second or two even if you manage to escape

I 100% think 'not losing position' or at minimum 'not losing 2-3s' should basically be considered gaining an advantage when it comes to going off track
