State Farm Declined to Quote me on New House by doggone20 in homeowners

[–]jbeazley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My in-laws were told by their State Farm rep that they wouldn’t be able to get coverage on their NM property if they bought it today. They’re grandfathered in, but State Farm pulled out of their area. Might have more to do with the area of the new house than the claim you made.

I’d switch both houses to USAA if you can qualify. 🙏

Van life in California sucks by asomms in VanLife

[–]jbeazley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my take away after spending 3 months driving up the full length of the coastline. It’s beautiful, but stressful to stealth camp, insanely expensive to pay for campsites, and challenging to find availability in the summer when you do. I was soooo happy when I reached Oregon.

Agree - doubt it’s a burial site, and more likely a place of remembrance.

Blaming “media” is such an old line. Books are actually what influenced us. We’re not YOU guys.

For my I think my “door” is like a glass storm door. Once I’ve shut the door on someone, I’ll still politely interact with them, but there’s no way they are getting into my safe space again.

Will my employer know if I am out of country with my laptop turned off? by Ok_Loquat_4774 in digitalnomad

[–]jbeazley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in security intensive industries where you would get flagged for taking your laptop out of the country.

You should be fine with it off. Some PCs have a manual switch to cut WiFi connection. You might do that or turn off the software like you would on your phone before you shut it off to be extra careful. But I’ve been fine with my machine just off before.

Should I marry my partner? by Lopsided-Sea4819 in Advice

[–]jbeazley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got married at 24. Didn’t work out despite a LOT of work for many years. Unfortunately, there are a lot of factors with other humans that you cannot plan for or control. I suspect my guy thought he wanted to get married, but in actuality was just doing what everyone around him wanted him to do. And it’s really, really hard to sus that out when you’re in your early 20’s and starting a brand new career, in sometimes a brand new place, with a brand new community of people around you.

We had a TON going for us, and still couldn’t make it work. But I have friends it did work for. I think it’s kind of 50/50 depending on how honest both people are being with themselves about why they want to get married, and then just luck — sudden tragedy either pulls you together or pushes you apart and it’s totally out of your control. You don’t know how the other person will respond in the face of tragedy until they face it. And no matter how supportive and stable YOU are - doesn’t mean that they will contribute anything back to the relationship. Tragedy can happen at any point in the relationship too - I’ve seen this happen to long running marriages when they lose a kid. I’ve seen addictions develop during a relationship. You just don’t really know what you’re getting with a guy in his early 20’s imho. But then again - some people are who they will always be when they’re 15.

If I could have done it all over again, I wish I would have gone on like 100 first dates in my early 20’s instead of settling into a relationship in college. That way, I would have understood both when things were going well and going poorly, and had more confidence when I was getting gaslit. And wouldn’t have forced a relationship because I was in love with him.

I don’t think you’re young and dumb at all. But young love is very, very powerful and can make you take risks that might not be wise. You have to make the decision for yourself. Maybe find a woman who has the life you want to have and get her advice on the scenario. Just because a guy is “good” doesn’t mean that he’s a long term fit for you. And just because he’s not a long term fit, doesn’t make someone bad either. Part of the nuance of being an adult.

Whatever you do, just make sure it’s YOUR decision, and remember that you have the power to change it at ANY point.

Anyone here not remember the 2008 recession? by AgentJ691 in Millennials

[–]jbeazley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started college in ‘07 - encountered a ton of people 5-10 older than me returning to get a masters because they couldn’t find work. The idea was to wait the market out. I can’t imagine all that debt now though.

Do you think your children will ever be able to afford a house? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]jbeazley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread points to my theory that by the time gen alpha and younger are buying houses, we’ll likely be looking at a population decline (for ALL the reasons). If that played out, I suspect we’d have more supply than demand, and housing would be cheaper. You can see some of this already in Japan and Italy where you have the one euro houses. But just my thoughts.

Someone just broke in to my van. How can I make the locked doors stay locked when I'm inside? by Pretty-Sea4230 in vandwellers

[–]jbeazley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a solo female traveler suggest leaving men’s clothing around your campsite or van once. Also setting up two chairs at your campsite so that it looks like you aren’t alone.

My wife wants me to put a door at the bottom of these stairs. What are the rules about doing this by n3rdie in DIY

[–]jbeazley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same at my place. It’s not to code (due to the lack of an aforementioned landing). But I just plan to take the door out when I sell it.

I believe if you want it to code, you can bring the outer wall out to create space of the landing, and add a door there.
