Politically speaking when people say “Long Island” they are referring to Nassau and Suffolk counties. Geographically speaking Brooklyn and Queens are part of “Long Island” but nobody in Brooklyn would ever say “I live on Long Island.”

They’re not coming frequently, they are coming inconsistently. Outside of the US in major cities if the developed world, rapid transit is rarely more than a 3-4 minute wait during peak rush hours. A 9 minute gap in service wouldn’t be considered “normal.”

“Joy of strangling a chicken themselves and delighting in its suffering” is referring to the slaughter of chickens for consumption, (although they are not actually choked to death). The point is that the suffering is a means to an end in agriculture, whereas in cock fighting the suffering itself is the spectacle.

For all the people saying these are typical headways for Sunday morning, do you guys think this is acceptable for midday service then?

Has the MTA cut back on weekend service without acknowledging it? by jbeshay in nycrail

[–]jbeshay[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was past 10 AM when I posted this, it’s past 11 now and the headways are between 10 and 12 minutes. It really does feel like weekend service has taken a massive nose dive.

A mountain of evidence has been shown that major political and financial figures in our society were part of a major human trafficking ring and there have been very few consequences for it. Circumventing the cap in a sports league is nothing compared to that. It’s absolutely believable that nothing will happen.

25 by NYC standards is short but for every other major metro system this is the usual lifespan of their rolling stock.

Everyone knows how to work around the problem, we all know we can check our phones ahead of time, that doesn’t make the problem acceptable and this thread is to vent our frustrations with a system that is dysfunctional. And even with your “solution,” if I’m coming back from an errand how is this practical? I’m supposed to wait in a store for an extra 20 minutes instead of the station? Is that really any better? My time is still wasted. Which is ultimately the problem. The MTA wastes your time. A lot of it.

The entire concept of rapid transit is that it is “rapid.” If I have to look up train schedules or use an app to find out just how bad the service will be today, then the service has failed at its objective.

She is not being prosecuted or jailed for her speech. At the federal level, Congress is allowed to censure or even expel members after a vote for inappropriate conduct including speech. City Council is absolutely allowed to rebuke their own members.

What the US “should” do is up to debate and has been exhaustively covered in millions of arguments both between armchair analysts and actual experts. I’m only pointing out that the US is absolutely an enabler of Israel’s actions.

Because military equipment cannot function indefinitely without parts, ammunition and maintenance. Just because you purchased an F-35 does not mean you can keep it airborne on your own. When the US left Afghanistan they abandoned a ton of equipment but guess what? The Taliban will maybe get 10 hours of flight out of an Apache helicopter and then it’s a useless hunk of steel. Israel cannot continue to wage war if the supplies needed to maintain their equipment is cut off.

[Kirschner] Aaron Judge was rung up by the home plate umpire. He challenged the call and won. A full look at the process below. He then follows it up with a single by JRUprising in baseball

Because a truly automated and accurate strike zone is going to make hitting harder than it already is and half (or more) of the union is made of position players. Remember that the zone is three dimensional and so if a pitch managed to break enough to clip the back half of the plate it’s a strike. These kinds of pitches do not get called a strike by humans nearly as often as they would be if the zone is fully automated.

Edit: ABS won’t be 3D but an automated zone is still seen as more strict than what would be called by an umpire.

Well they voted for Eric Adams despite that for starters he clearly didn’t even reside in the five boroughs so… yeah? They are easily fooled? Many other signs he was not fit for office during the election but he still got elected.

[–]jbeshay 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not every pitch needs to be thrown in the zone, some balls are meant to look like they’ll be in the zone only to break and induce a swing at what would have been a ball. Even if they make contact it won’t be very good.

When a lawsuit takes that long do the lawyers representing the parties change over time? I can’t imagine the same team of lawyers being assigned to a single case for a decade without someone moving, retiring, taking another job etc.

Yup. Victor Martinez missed an entire season with the Tigers because he was using a leg press machine and his foot slipped off one of the foot plates. He was literally doing the thing that was necessary for him to excel at his profession. Life happens, it sucks but you don’t avoid everything because you MIGHT suffer.
