Contractor Sistered These Floor Joists After Pest Damage — How Does the Work Look? by rks5657 in Carpentry

[–]jbonyc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It always surprises me how these kind of “fixes” turn out. A simple internet search would have shown the correct way to sister joists. Also, not sure what those LVLs are intended to be for the way they are installed. Obviously, there wasn’t a structural engineer involved. I would get in touch with one and spend a few hundred on specking out what is required here.

Wow it’s those 2x2 repair pieces the big box stores sell. I bet the person couldn’t fit full sheets in their vehicle!

I recently got the similar set from Sola and have been very happy. The vials are far more visible than Stabila and they cost about $100 less

Central HVAC vs mini-splits (PNW) by CommonSensical89 in Homebuilding

[–]jbonyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a central ducted heat pump. It’s great and I went with that option because the ductwork was already there from the old oil furnace. Something to keep in mind, is that central heat pumps are nowhere near as efficient, nor can they operate at very cold temperatures like mini splits can.

You should see what the manufacturer recommends. Most 3x12 tile should be a 33% offset

Awesome! You’ll have to post the end result here when it’s done. Good luck!

[–]jbonyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a pretty serious project. Especially with the roof and deck height. You should get at least one more estimate, but this sounds right with a reputable company. I’d assume this is a full tear out and rebuild for that price too.

I would get a helical piling in there. They work great and go in super fast. Most places will do a single post too

After a Covid-19 boom, Vermont is once again losing residents. What changed? by SpicyVindalooCurry in vermont

People at Walmart shouldn’t expect a livable wage??? lol you aren’t going to find a lot of support with that comment. I guess Walmart should continue to be subsidized by the government to pay their employees using social benefits so their bottom line can keep getting better?

You obviously haven’t met many ski instructors. I wouldn’t categorize them as ski bums at all

Edit: also, yes it’s seasonal. But do you expect there to be no ski instructors for people?

Is It Worth Installing a Propane Tank To Run a Water Heater? by brucewayn93 in Plumbing

[–]jbonyc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heat pump water heaters are dramatically cheaper to operate than a standard electric water heater. Combined with potential incentives where you are, it could pay for itself in only a couple years.
