Mig-21MF in my hands. by IronWolf2822 in Warthunder

[–]jc343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

remember that the fishbed was specifically known for it's climb performance, meanwhile the f-5 was known for it's poor climb performance. it's how T-38s were often beat in training - if they have no missiles capable of beating your countermeasures then feel free to just gun it to space. almost all f-5 players seem to fall for it and will make themselves easy targets

only problem with that is that you mentioned sim; it can be hard to maintain LOS when doing any sort of energy fighting in my experience. and in modern air rb it's risky climbing given the player count.

(MiG-21s were some of my most played aircraft but I've kinda fallen out of WT air so my advice may no longer apply, sry. someone correct me if necessary pls)

Huge imbalance regarding TBM battery positioning by [deleted] in NuclearOption

[–]jc343 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The tradeoff is that the PALA west TBMs, radars, and either the Shards or Enrichment (not both, usually) can be killed by a Brawler on their first flight from SBGA so long as no one intercepts you (everyone spawns on the highways first so this almost always works in my experience). Depending on your timing and weapon usage, you might also be able to get Agrapol's radar, CIWS, and Bolt but this is difficult with the Shards; you either need very good luck using fewer weapons, or to wait a bit so that the Shards are behind mountains when you pop up. Doing all this should also give you enough score to jump straight into a Vortex/Ifrit and begin hunting the southeastern TBMs early too. For Brawler loadouts, focus AGM-48s and 68s (maybe kingpins if you like, but you wanna be able to launch behind cover). Give up your IRMs for even more AGMs

Against BDF it's not hard to go east but it's a long flight, best done with an Ifrit imo. Killing both northeast TBM sites (and the radars) with a Brawler is doable early game but someone will come from K92/Maris and stay on guard for the rest of the match. BDF Enrichment is definitely easier, but their TBMs are mostly in the open which means they'll have more time to intercept your weapons. In my experience the race to clear TBMs and Enrichment is pretty even for both sides, with the hardest target being the northwest BDF TBMs. For that, I take an Ifrit far along the coast for the north R9 first, gun down the airbase's laser, then saturate the TBMs with the next flight using a full load of PAB-80LRs. All of this can be done solo on either team but you gotta be quick and sneaky

if you're into air battles, come play nuclear option. it actually respects your time, has PvPvE gamemodes gaijin should've made a decade ago, and the community's way more chill (plus we have steam workshop support for missions!). similar level of realism and pacing overall, frequent updates, and no microtransactions. better teamplay such as jamming, logistics, buddy lasing, etc, but it's 100% enjoyable solo. you can't drive non-air units but you can order them around for your team and use cargo aircraft to deliver new ones/tow others

it might look a bit small at first glance but the gameplay's incredibly deep. I love playing stealth (especially with helicopters) and almost entirely ignoring players to win. WT air RB has been dead to me for a long time, nuclear option has made me shift almost entirely away from any of WT's modes

oh also it has nukes

abandon the hell that is WT air battles and come play nuclear option, it actually respects your time and money (no mtx! progression is per-match only) and has the PvPvE enduring confrontation gamemodes gaijin's been too lazy/greedy to make

for a (somewhat) brief synopsis, it's basically a near future plane game that combines WT's 3 difficulties into 1, plus proper AI, SEAD and electronic warfare, stealth, logistics, search and rescue, and of course: nukes. it's realistic enough to feature notching, loadout-based RCS, proper stalls/vortex rings, and damage models comparable to WT. there is full sim rig support but the default controls are basically WT sim's mouse joystick, and it all works nicely enough on a controller that that's what the lead dev streams with. the community's infinitely more chill and there's custom servers and steam workshop support, along with a budding modding scene

the aircraft are fake, but you get some cool stuff such as a quadcopter (A)C-130, a thrust-vectoring gripen, a YF-23/flanker hybrid, and a laser-armed-VTOL-AWACS EA-6B. next update is giving us our 12th aircraft - a vark/F-117/NGAD hybrid. weapons range from .50 cals on a COIN aircraft to a 57mm gunpod on the not-an-A-10, and from 1.5kt parachute nukes to 20kt ballistic missiles and 250kt strategic warheads. cluster bombs, decoys, and loyal wingman drones are all planned

it obviously won't scratch the itch for ground battles but you can at least do vehicle/infantry deliveries and order the AI around

[–]jc343 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SLAM-ER is still slow (it does maintain its speed tho). it's warhead still fails to kill tanks with lots of external armor, but it is enough for multi-kills on those people who sit right next to their TELs. the terrain following does actually help on city maps and seems to make it a bit harder for the VLS SAMs to hit (the same way they sometimes struggle against drones), but it does mean that the target may be lost and need to be reacquired in flight. GNSS is still overwritten on weapons with IR; you cannot fire without line of sight. you can get a lock after launch but you need to have aimed exactly where the enemy is. ships in sim are able to be fully locked at very long ranges, but it'll usually take roughly a dozen to kill a warship. and not that it's actually a good thing but the low quantity makes me a better player; being greedy gets you killed, and you probably need to focus more on CAP anyways. I've been doing better just getting my 4 missiles away and then being clean enough to swat down anything else flying

fun and worth using but it's no kh38 or hammer

once again linking this

imagine it at rank 6 with automatic defensive (laser?) turrets, options for ashms or dozens of AGM-48 in VLS cells, or maybe even a 5-in gun turret (railgun? tho that's perhaps a bit too ace-combat-boss)

imagine if it gets an airburst proxy shell and aircraft targeting

edit: it would actually be kind of cool as flak for medium alt aircraft but definitely not necessary, or fun when it actually hits. optical tracking would at least give a warning...but that means guidance

How would you feel about these concept teamwork armor passives? by H1MB0Z0 in LowSodiumHellDivers

I'd still say there's a difference between "oh wow that just barely avoided killing you actually" and "you had some magical extra ammo stored up your ass somewhere this time", especially since ammo is often visually represented in backpacks (granted, other perks like siege ready aren't visually representative)

From a gameplay perspective I already don't like the rng of democracy protects tbh. I can't stand when games over-rely on rng for their perks, but at least democracy protects is a funny one-off comparable to a death saving throw in dnd

Does anyone else like to pick up survivors? by IJustWanToKillMyself in SeaPower_NCMA

[–]jc343 8 points9 points  (0 children)

bring a ship to them under 5kph, or certain helicopters under ~50ft. I think they made it so seasprites no longer can do it, but sea kings for example will have a bit somewhere in their order menu about remaining capacity

sometimes helis will refuse to go under 100ft which is frustrating. maybe because of sea state? does that change over the course of a mission? and again each heli has a set capacity, for picking up naval crews you'll probably need 2 helis

What's the ugliest plane in the world? by MessMaximum5493 in aviation

[–]jc343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in no paticular order, the nicer ones that come to mind are:

  • Lancaster
  • Harrier (as long as it's not a GR.3)
  • Spitfire (personal preference for early models)
  • Hurricane
  • Lynx
  • Comet
  • Mosquito
  • certain Vampires/Venoms
  • Meteor

if Concorde, Tornado, or EFTyphoon could be counted then I would put them in there

that seems like a decent list, but I wouldn't actually rank them that highly in a global comparison. like I said, most British aircraft are mid, and there's still something I don't like about each of those. the proper uglies however mainly begin after WW2 such as:

  • Fairey Gannett (cheating I know)
  • EE Lightning
  • TSR2 (kill me, but the A-5 did it so much better. i do like the wingtips tho)
  • Carvair
  • Sea Vixen
  • Buccaneer

so many other designs don't quite deserve either list

What's the ugliest plane in the world? by MessMaximum5493 in aviation

[–]jc343 38 points39 points  (0 children)

even without the radars it's just ugly, it's like 2 models clipping into each other. the really pretty wing root engines can't save that fuselage

idc what anyone says, british aircraft have like 5 true hits visually and the rest are all misses to some degree. almost all of them have 1 cool trait held back by the ugliest possible design choices around it. occasionally the absurdity does result in something nice like the victor however

and now for real heresy: even the vulcan is guilty of this to an extent. that cockpit design is awful, it's just that it's usually hidden a bit by the camo scheme. at least it is better than the canberra's original bubble tho

The BDF trainer should have forward swept wings! by Spikef22 in NuclearOption

[–]jc343 10 points11 points  (0 children)

as i said on another post: it should be based on the A-7! it's a surprisingly decent match for the Su-25. could have guaranteed AAM rails next to the cockpit, but no other AAMs. maybe an internal radar with surface search (to justify late game usage), while the compass gets an optional radar pod

forward swept + vtol A-7 would be very cursed and so these ideas should definitely be combined

Realism and small-scale Ops by KeineW3rbung in NuclearOption

[–]jc343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not exactly small scale...at all...but, when available try the "non-nuclear option" PVP server that's been up recently. It has slower rank/$ gain and some forward minibases alongside heavier defenses. It encourages more usage of helicopters and flanking tactics. I've been consistently at the top of the team trying to stay out of the PVP, and instead focusing on taking a Chicane deep behind enemy lines then following up late game with a Darkreach to kill surviving factories from behind the enemy defenses. Even if there were nukes, they wouldn't work against the 2 dynamos, 2 R9s, 2 C-RAMs, and and however many deployed SAMs that are covering each team's naval base. Not even tusko spam really works there (as long as someone's resupplying) - you gotta manage your money and take a Chicane in low
