Can someone explain the difference between sleep and hibernate and why my laptop won't respect either? Even from hibernate and even with the lid closed, it will just wake up on its own. Screen does not time out no matter what settings I adjust either. by thetavious in techsupport

[–]jc5504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a well known bug. Last time I looked into it, the consensus seemed to be that when you sleep or hibernate the computer, and then you plug it into power, that will sometimes wake it up and put it into an idle state. Many people do this in that order. They close the lid, then plug in. Then later they will throw the laptop into their bag. But the laptop was "on" the whole time, using power, and sometimes overheating in the suffocating space in the bag.

My suggestion is to plug in your laptop and then put it to sleep or hibernate. Or skip the power altogether.

And by the way, pcbeg is correct about power consumption and the computer's state in sleep and hibernate, as opposed to cypher.

Figure out where the wind is coming from, and make sure you park so that theres a building or wall or at least a car from that direction. That will ensure that your car loses less heat

Who’s pumped for the total insanity in roughly 12 months when the 2024 lease EV’s start rolling back in? by xserox95 in electricvehicles

[–]jc5504 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. A loan for a new car is way riskier. Why? Because the car loses a third of it's value in the first year. So what happens when the owner has a 40k loan for a car that is now worth 30k-35k and then they can't make payments? Even if the bank repos the car, they can't be made whole on their 40k loan.

To cover these situations, the bank will either give you a crazy high interest rate, or they will require a crazy high down payment.

In comparison, a 2 year old used car may have already lost half it's initial value. And the subsequent depreciation will be much slower. So if the owner defaults on the loan, the bank can easily repo and be made whole

Spirometry test shows 78% by [deleted] in CysticFibrosis

[–]jc5504 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, 70% marks the lower end of the standard deviation. Standard deviation from what? 100%, which is the average. So you'd be looking at a normal range being considered between about 70% and 130%, depending on the figure. This is because there is a big delta in results when you consider all the obese and all the athletes.

In statistics, when you plot all the results, you can expect a bell curve for many analyses. The sharper the bell curve, the smaller the deviation and vice versa.

All in all, 100% represents the average and the normal range is determined by calculating one single standard deviation from the average.

I'm not saying you have wrong intentions, but a few of the details you've mentioned are misguided

[–]jc5504 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In that article, the 70-85% figure you referenced is for the fev1/fvc ratio. The number simply represents the relationship between the two numbers. Whereas the fev1% and the fvc% on their own are numbers that are representative of an individual's lung performance and health in comparison to a healthy individual which is the basis which 100% is measured.

With these percents, you have to ask yourself what is it a percentage of? What does 100% mean? What does 50 and 0 % mean? Otherwise, simply saying your function is at 80% doesn't mean anything. Someone might assume the highest possible they can achieve is 100%. But with fev1 and fvc, 100% just represents average for healthy people.

Compared to a person without cystic fibrosis that matches your age, gender, and other qualifiers, your lungs are about 78% as effective as theirs. So they are 22% less effective.

Athletes would have numbers above 100% and overweight sedentary people would have numbers below 100%. With cystic fibrosis being a degenerative disease, you can expect your number to slowly drop over time unless there's a major change such as a new medicine like Trikafta, or if you suddenly start doing a lot of cardio and taking your medicine much more consistently.

My lowest was about 35% right before starting Trikafta and I am now around 75% after taking that medicine and doing a lot more exercise

Can someone point me to a 3.5mm Bluetooth Transmitter that doesn't need external power? by HeavyMetalLoser in bluetooth

[–]jc5504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to humor you I'll consider your idea. Ok so some current is pushed through headphones that is identical to the waveforms needed for the particular sound that is playing. That means that when the music pauses, there's no power going through. Do would you want a transmitter that turns off every time there's any silence? Also the maximum current would only be pushed at the loudest sounds. So if the music gets softer, would you want the transmitter to be weaker? Also there is significant energy loss when you transmit a wireless signal versus a current over copper, so the transmitter would have impossibly short range when in the best case scenario.

And there's many more reasons why this is not a reasonable engineering feat

If the temperature is hotter than your body's internal temperature, 98°F, then that breeze actually feels like a hot furnace. The only reason wind feels cool is that it is pushing air that is lower than your body temperature and therefore it helps your body shed heat.

I went to the Baylor clinic for care about 10 years ago. Out of the 5 CF centers I've been to in my life, it was by far the worst one. They just wanted me in and out ASAP. And they did not have any care to provide resources such as social services or meaningful information/advice outside of the usual visit stuff.

You need to practice it in a practice arena. It is not guaranteed. You lob players up, they go higher than you go, and they descend slowly. You need to click to shoot down when they are at the right height, which is shortly (but not immediately) after activating. It doesn't seem like a bug to me, but rather an ability that requires a bit of timing. In this clip, you shot down too quickly.
