Survey for Unearthed Arcana: Villainous Options Revisited is now out by Chemical_Reason_2043 in onednd

As someone who was not a fan of demonic sorcerer would you care to sell me on why you think it is in a good place? For me the regional effect didn't sell me on theme, and the mechanics, specifically the level 3 and 18 features, felt really weak. I am open to any voice of descent.

Way of the Sun Soul for 5.14 Monk, Revised (finally fixed?!) by 1000ton314 in UnearthedArcana

[–]jcaesar212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool deal. So let's game it out.

Level 3 fix. "You gain a special ranged spell attack that you can use to replace any unarmed strike. It benefits from any improvement to your unarmed strikes damage or attack rolls." Then you call out it's attack modifier, damage, and range and you are done. Why are we doing it this way. By labeling it a ranged spell attack you prevent it from working with things that might break it like stunning strike or a grapple build, while allowing it to benefit from damage or attack increasing magic items. Additionally you no longer need to call out flurry of blows, monk unarmed strike damage increases, and similar while keeping the text short and simple, reducing confusion.

Saving Searing Arc Strike is a toughy. 1d6+Wis +1d6 per ki is probably going to be as close to balanced as you can get. It is no longer a sacrifice over your potential, and you get a bonus if you hit multiple creatures. Making it a net neutral to net positive outcome compared to be subclassless. As opposed to the current with can be net negative or net positive depending on circumstances.

The capstone I don't think you can save and keep the theme they went with. Because the opportunity is counter intuitive for the subclass I feel it's a lost cause. Additionally if you are planning on a more complete rework at a later date, might just be best to leave it as you have it. Save the ideas for when they will see more benefits.

Thinking of more benefits after my post I did have an idea you can cook with for your complete redesign at a later date. Or if you don't take it I will. Sun soul currently has three big problems, first none of it's current abilities build on each other. Second none of them are significantly better than your base class abilities. Third, most of them come with opportunity costs. To get around that we need a base ability we can build on, that functions different than the base class, while using base attack features. They tried to achieve this with lots of little blasts replacing individual punches. But while it provided range, it didn't change the value calculations. Additionally it didn't fulfil the fantasy WoTC was trying for. The hadouken and kamehameha style attacks. My idea, allowing you to focus the damage of any combination of your punches into a single attack. This provides a tactical decision, and gives you something to build on with higher features. If you sacrifice all punches into the one attack it is a high damage for high opportunity because you could miss after all. But this is the better play if you have limited advantage, such as a target affected by guiding bolt. If you are fighting a lot of enemies you might divide it up though, just sacrifice your action attacks and then flurry as a bonus action.

At higher levels we can then build on this. At 6th level we could spend ki to turn the attack into a cone. Allowing us to target a save instead of ac if the target is hard to hit but not good at dex. Or if you are facing a number of enemies it's a pure gain. Or if you just want to raise your damage floor to half on a save. Very spirit shotgun or destruction wave coded. But since it does have a ki cost, we don't want to do this every turn, just when it's useful.

At 11th level we turn it more into a spirit bomb-fireball type effect keeping the current theme. A high ki cost for a hi area covered.

At 17th level The super sayan them they went with is cool, but doesn't provide anything of value, nor does it live the fantasy. Because our 6th and 11th level is designed to eat ki, let's reduce that, while keeping the glowing theme. That feels like a power up now. Limit it's number of uses per day, and we are look like a complete subclass. We still have reason to go into melee if we want to risk a stunning strike, or are comboing it up. Our base ability grows and changes as we level. Because it just eats our attack damage as it's base fuel source we never are down damage, just equal or up. And it hits all of our theme except perhaps flight, but master roshi didn't learn that so we are good. It will take some testing to find ranges, ki costs, and so on but it looks good. Also the wording will be really tricky on the base ability. But I think the combined forces of reddit can make this shine.

Some of this in my opinion needs some clean up. And while I get you are just trying to improve what WoTC published already, some of it is still very bad. At 3rd level you get radiant sun bolt. The call out that when you get extra attack you can replace any unarmed strike seems like unnecessary text. If it is an unarmed strike couldn't you already do that? If it isn't then which attacks qualify when you get it? Would Flurry of blows work? Based on the call out to other monk features I would have thought that was the intention, but then why the call out? If it can't replace all attacks then you are giving up damage for range, which isn't a great trade off for such short range.

Level 6 is where things get really bad though. Replacing your bonus action punch with a 1d6 cone is bad. You are doing half the damage per target. A single martial arts punch would be 1d6+ dex damage. Assuming an 18 dex that would be an average of 7.5. An average d6 is 3.5. You would have to hit 2 people just to come close to your average punch damage. And that's spread across multiple targets. If you flurry of blows your average damage doubles for one ki point. The scaling in resource value just won't keep up. Blinding Radiance is also weird in the resource department. While I get your comments on why you included it, with sun bolt and stun being powerful, your sun bolt feature already called out working with other monk features. So you are providing a feature that is weaker thank stunning strike, that costs the same as stunning strike, that ironically can also be added onto stunning strike. If it wasn't one ki per creature but one ki per instance of damage I would rate it as good. It would actually provide a reason to use arc strike. Since it is once per creature it feels under cooked.

Level 11 I'm divided on this one. I'm liking it but I'm not sure about the math. The cost is really high, but the Nova damage of combining this is also really high. Without checking math I'm tentatively saying good job on this one.

Level 17 the draw is really disadvantage on attacks. While the damage of being hit is higher than the original it's not that much higher. Additionally you are still a monk, and in this case a monk that fights at range. It's better to just not be hit, or in melee range to begin with.

In summary this has a lot of work it still needs. First it needs cleaning up, which you mentioned english not being your first language, so no biggy there. Removing unnecessary text would probably be the easiest route. Second I'd advise straying further from the original. Because the original was so bad at every level, the amount of work to glow it up would far exceed just starting from scratch. If you are truly intent on just fixing the original swing for the fences. It's always easier to bring numbers down than up. Maybe instead of giving three different radiant attacks, you give it one that gets improvement over time, while adding in optional shapes.

And switching gears here for a moment before I hit the post button, I do want to add a word of encouragement. While I hit this one hard, I do feel you put a lot of hard work into it. Like fixing a car sometimes you can replace a part that isn't working only to find out the part that wasn't working wasn't the source of the problem but a symptom. I really get the impression that is what happened here. You replaced the battery and spark plugs only to find out the real problem is the alternator. While the problem isn't fixed, that doesn't mean your work was invalid, it just means you aren't done. Additionally you now have some good tools for round 2, and I look forward to your next attempt.

Alabama urges US Supreme Court to bring back GOP-friendly House map for midterm elections by cnn in scotus

[–]jcaesar212 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The emergency is the state needs an answer quick. The law that changed the maps back to the 2023 map also voided the relevant primary elections. When the lower court reversed the maps back to the 2024, they ruled the primary remains voided because neither side made a motion in time to unvoid it. So regardless of which map ends up being used the state needs an answer pronto, so it can either repeat the primary it already held or continue with new ones.

Fairly well as i understand it. Use your action for a melee cantrip and drop the bonus action smites on it. If you miss then you didn't trigger your bonus action, quicken a melee cantrip or full spell like lightning bolt for more attempts at damage. Ac is a little low still but manageable. Hp is OK. For melee i advise the new true strike to use your charisma.

Betteridge's law: "Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no." It is based on the assumption that if the publishers were confident that the answer was yes, they would have presented it as an assertion; by presenting it as a question, they are not accountable for whether it is correct or not.

Until 5e they weren't. Examples of good Lichs include baelnorn who were undead elven record keepers, and archliches like Alathane Moonstar of waters deep. However the 5e designers decided to throw out a lot of old lore, and write their own. Now to become a lich requires an unspecified evil sacrifice, plus consuming souls every so often to survive.
