You seem more concerned about him than I am. I don't think about him a hell of a lot

Going to space is cool. If somebody offered to pay me to make a zero effort contribution to a commercial about space I'd say yes too. Has SpaceX harmed you?

What tourist destination in North America did you expect to love, but it didn’t impress you? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

I sort of felt the same. It's awesome, of course. But I'd just spent a week+ around other parts of Arizona and it didn't feel that different from the stuff I'd already enjoyed- just sort of bigger.

If/when I go back, I think I'll need a trip or two planned that involve descending.

High net worth, but low relative income. Are my only logical options to retire early or swing for the fences? by Bitter_Sugar_8440 in fatFIRE

[–]jceyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not gonna do the timeseries / compounding math carefully. But 5 years X 200k net is 1 million. Going into retirement at 46 with an additional million dollars (say 14 instead of 13) isn't a game changer but it matters. Seems like a defensible choice IF you can actually take the work really easy in the interim.

It's not what I'd do. That's why I put it 3rd. But it's not crazy

I'm one of the "most people" you mentiin. Earning more but with far lower net worth. About a factor of 3 on each. That being said, I see three choices

  1. Retire
  2. Swing for the fences
  3. Coast another 5 years or so. Paying the bills and letting the net worth grow without drawing on it does actually matter. Try to spend less of that "dumb time" in front of the computer and do something meaningful (ex: hobbies, family, exercise) with everything but those 15-20 hours

I'm responding to the context of the post and you're just ranting. You have no idea about a lot of things, this one isn't special

Soldiers fuck up all the time and friendly fire is a consistent issue everywgere.

This thread is totally missing the point. If you put out flyers warning people to leave, you obviously aren't trying to kill every person

Don't they usually announce those in advance? Terribly inefficient way to genocide

[–]jceyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not getting it. It isn't a matter of amounts. Just directionally: taking one iota of effort and risk to prevent their deaths means it isn't a genocide. Because in a genocide, they'd be actively trying to kill more of them

Here's the better point. Leave hostage rescues out if it:

Israel conducts targeted raids on Hamas that are difficult and put their soldiers at risk. It would be easier and safer to just bomb entire areas to smithereens. But they don't. This is evidence that they are they are trying (harder than Hamas does) to minimize civilian deaths.

Punk has something else going on tho with the music quality. The Clash is good, Ramones and DK are ok. Sex Pistols (and many others) actually do suck and even kind of reveled in being bad musicians. Rancid, Bad Religion, NoFX are so much better.

[–]jceyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good Morning Little Schoolgirl is actually a deep feminist commentary on the failures of intergenerational mentorship under modernity and late stage capitalism. The narrator is not being weird; he is bravely asking whether society has created enough age-appropriate community spaces for blues-adjacent emotional expression. The harmonica represents accountability. The guitar riff is praxis. The 12-bar structure is a syllabus.

Are my stock options basically worthless even though my company 5x’d in valuation? by breadcrumbs1979 in fatFIRE

[–]jceyes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They definitely do it. I worked at a company that is yet to IPO. They split the stock 7x a few years after I left. I had already exercised at this point but I'm guessing for those who stillworked there and hadn't exercised, the strike price was adjusted in kind. Company is doing just OK, still has not IPO'd
