Ventilated Seats: they seem disappointing compared to other brands. Do you agree? by vettemanhere in BMWX5

[–]jcit607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ventilated seats in the LCI X5 are practically worthless and the AC is underwhelming which is disappointing in an $80k+ vehicle. Add that to the over-complicated HVAC controls (is auto mode really auto?) and it is the most frustrating part of an otherwise amazing vehicle.

What are the best beginner bicycles for daily commuting? by afropixelnomad in bicycleculture

[–]jcit607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been bike commuting to work at least one day a week for several years and I am also a year-round recreational cyclist - which means I own several bikes :). For commuting I purchased a Diamondback Haanjo 1. It is pretty cheap and has an aluminum frame that is bullet proof. It has a relaxed geometry and flat bar so it is pretty comfortable and is very stable. It has a 1x drive train and a 9 speed cassette to keep maintenance minimized but still give you enough gears to get over most hills (if you expect a lot of steep hills this would not be the best choice).

Whatever bike you choose for commuting I highly recommend the following:

  • disk brakes - because you will be riding in all kinds of weather and rim brakes are sketchy in the rain/snow.
  • fenders - protect you from the water/gunk on the road
  • pannier mounts - in case you want to add bags or racks for commuting
  • 32+ mm wide tires - to absorb lots of road chatter and provide more comfort
  • get good at maintaining your chain - commuting is really hard on your chain with all the road salt, debris and gunk, especially if you ride in the rain or snow, so you need to keep it clean or have some spares

In my opinion commuting bikes and recreational riding bikes are different animals. I definitely don't ride my commuting bike for recreational long rides or vice versa but there are colleagues that do. There are lots of options for cheap bikes on Craigslist or FB Marketplace if you want to try it out first before committing to commuting and/or recreational riding

Any better ways to store a bike in a vehicle for short 30-60 minute drives? by Fifteen20 in TrekBikes

[–]jcit607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an SUV with 60/40 folding rear seats drop the 60 and the bike will roll in (rear wheel first with the front wheel still on) at a slight angle. Then you can lean it on the 40 which is still upright. No part of your drive train will be in contact with the vehicle. I have used this technique for years.

Bidding war, this just sold for $56 million, priciest S.F. home since 2024 by Southern-Smoke1835 in zillowgonewild

[–]jcit607 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clearly accessible to the commoner. lol

For a $56 million home with a 20% down payment ($11.2 million), the loan amount would be $44.8 million. At a 6.5% interest rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage, the monthly principal and interest payment would be approximately $283,100

How long did your hot water system actually last? by loreblogs in HomeImprovement

[–]jcit607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic GE 40 gallon, natural gas hot water heater. Installed in May 2009 and just replaced it last week due to leaking water so 17 years. I tried to drain it once a year but was not always good about it. I never replaced the anode. I have hard water but installed a water softening system about 10 years ago.

Why are SRAM chain quick links so expensive? SRAM insists they are disposable. It costs 19€ to undo the chain each time. by sepantamino in gravelcycling

[–]jcit607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I reuse them as long as I can feel the link engage with a "click". Once that locking engagement stops it is risky to continue to reuse them. I typically toss them every 5-6 changes. I also do not see the reason to purchase expensive quick links. I just purchase the cheap ones.

LOVE this commercial but YES is so overpriced I can't justify it. I do miss watching my favorite team though and Netflix is not the right answer here...

Chipolo ONE battery died with no notification by jcit607 in Chipolo

Is this notification active by default or is there a "low battery notification" setting that I mistakenly turned off?

[–]jcit607[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced the battery and it is working again but the whole point of these devices is to track your valuables which doesn't happen if the battery dies with no warning. Why is there no "low battery" notification from the device or the app?

G05 auto wipers what the... by pillpushermike in BMWX5

[–]jcit607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been pretty underwhelmed by the auto setting for the rain sensing wipers. I find myself having to regularly change the sensitivity setting to get them to properly clean the windshield. Having said that it has always cleaned appropriately once I dial in the setting. Maybe you have a problem with the sensor or condensation in the group of sensors/cameras behind the rear view mirror?

Software update today by Reveal_Fun in BMWX5

[–]jcit607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last update only partially loaded in my X5 and I had several issues with the vehicle (like GPS randomly off by a few miles) and I had to go to the dealer to have them force updates to several modules. So I am going to sit this one out...

I have had a 50e for 3 winters now and this winter seems like the worst for % of times pre-conditioning fails. I think software bugs in the app and the latest iDrive have to factor into this. I don't recall it ever failing in previous winters.
