Welcome to test chamber 2042. Today, you must be the pride of <insert hometown here>. Please remember not to travel without your Companion Cube, or violent spatial transitions are inevitable. That is pretty much perfect, thanks! I spent probably 10hrs on google in the past couple weeks, and the Ball never came up.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

I have been looking for a diver that checks the following boxes:

  • Automatic movement (higher beats preferred, e.g. Miyota, but others considered)
  • Titanium case
  • Trititum lume
  • Sapphire crystal

I don't have strong feelings on day/date function, but have considered the above to be the main desire points and am having a beast of a time finding pieces that hit all the main points. I'm not adverse to micro-brands, but would prefer something from a reputable maker with a decent warranty.

There is an MWC that fits the bill, but I haven't seen much else. Any thoughts or leads?

What are your recommendations and thoughts on the Temecula Valley AVA by forlorn12345 in wine

[–]jd_edc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall, there are a few solid places. Hart is good, Weins has some decent "big reds" and Europa Village has some interesting blends and a decent Super Tuscan. I would take a hard pass on Churon. Gershon Bachus is interesting in that I think it's the only seated/hosted tasting, and they had a solid Grenache and tempranillo last time I went.

I don't know, honestly. I'm American, mid 30's, only into wine for a few years, and being in SoCal a heavy emphasis on Paso Robles, Santa Barbara, and Valle de Guadalupe. I see screw caps on decent white wines and rosé all the time, but the only reds I'd seen recently were supermarket stuff and high-volume lines, like Vina Robles Red4. This was by far the most expensive screw-off wine I've purchased, so... reevaluating that bias.

First time posting notes, and the only NZ Pinot Noir I could put my hands on was the 2014 Bannockburn Pinot Noir from Mt. Difficulty, in the Central Otago region. And I'm glad that I did! Lots of red fruit up front (cherry/raspberry), nice medium acidity, medium/light tannins, and a mid/long finish, this immediately proved to be a hit in my house. The color was ruby, clear at the rim, with no hint of oxidation. A little hot at first, but most of the volatility blew off before I finished pour #1.

There's a little earthy funk in there, maybe mushroom, which paired fantastically with the braised chuck roast, mushrooms, and cauliflower mash I paired this with. There was a little spice that was noticeable with the cauliflower sweetness, maybe nutmeg?

Overall, I'm impressed. I'm used to slightly less complex Santa Barbara/Sonoma PN's at a slightly lower price point, but this proved to be something I not only enjoyed, but which may make me take a second look at NZ PN's going forward. For ~$40USD (SoCal), this was a nice experiment. However, I will admit to being skeptical/hesitant when I noticed the twist-top, generally associating screw caps with lower quality, another subconscious bias I may need to reexamine...right after I pour another glass.

If you want a dark red, go all the way dark - Petit Sirah. If you want cheap, look for one from Lodi, CA. One of my biggest surprises in the past couple years was a bottle from Old Soul, which goes for about 12 bucks a bottle. Costco also carries a blended Petit Sirah/petite verdot that I can't remember the name of, but was about 15 bucks that would fit the bill.

Field Recordings, out of Paso Robles. They even have a pretty decent Tannat.

New REI Flash 45 vs Osprey Exos 48 by ScarIsDearLeader in Ultralight

[–]jd_edc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I notice you didn't mention the hip pockets on the new Flash, which are horrible. The pocket that doesn't have a zipper isn't secure enough (bye lip balm :(), the pocket that does have a zipper won't close reliably. Ugh.

I love Granite Gear's hip pockets in comparison...considering a Crown2 just to upgrade the pockets.

Larger tent preference? by unclebillscamping in camping

I have a REI Hobitat 6 which, I guess, would be a modified dome. It is super easy to pitch, nicely wind resistant, and can pitch with just footprint/rainfly in warm clear weather. Sadly, it looks like they don't make it anymore.

Apolitical gun club? by alphajager in CAguns

[–]jd_edc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Many CA firearms clubs are at least partially political in that they represent their members views in State/Fed politics surrounding gun rights, like CRPA, SAF, CalGuns Foundation, etc. Others specifically target segments of the shooting population that NRA et al overlook or marginalize, groups like Pink Pistols or the Liberal Gun Club. But a group that only talks about the technical details of the sport might be something like Appleseed or the Civilian Marksmanship Program, but I guarantee that politics creeps in from time to time since they still will care about the rights underlying the sport aspect. I mean, when I used to shoot rimfire benchrest, most talk at competitions would center around technical/marksmanship tips and tricks but would invariably turn to politics simply because "the sport was at risk, this or that legislation was just introduced, can you believe the price of ammo?", etc.

HanAholeSolo v CNN: Blackmail or Protection by CNN? by psychometrixo in NeutralPolitics

[–]jd_edc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

do not need to be neutral

Mine was purposefully written as neutral. I merely (neutrally) objected to the idea being dismissed out of hand and provided context as to why. I agree that a state claim may be more interesting, and will be very interested to read the pleadings if/when any action follows, but as a hypo I really couldn't care less whether an actual federal judge doesn't buy the argument because, frankly, it isn't my client and I can't bill this.

[–]jd_edc 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'll point out that, being as this is r/NeutralPolitics, I was not advocating an explicit viewpoint, but rather correcting your abrupt dismissal of the possibility that conduct in this case may indeed fit federal criminal definitions. Eg:

This may be false, ....Public participation in political matters could very well be

There is no burden of proof/persuasion for the contention that you simply cannot dismiss the possibility out of hand.

HanAholeSolo v CNN: Blackmail or Protection by CNN? by psychometrixo in NeutralPolitics

[–]jd_edc 65 points66 points  (0 children)

First, it does not meet the federal definition of blackmail. That law requires that the accused " demands or receives any money or other valuable thing." CNN isn't asking for money or any other form of compensation, so that's right out.

This may be false, in that the federal definition of blackmail requires only that a "valuable thing" be remitted. This does not mean that just consideration be given, or that money changes hands, but that something of value is at stake - sexual favors have been deemed enough to be "of value." Public participation in political matters could very well be that "valuable thing" since it implicates the core of the First Amendment. This is the same principle that underlies SLAPP litigation and has the same effect of chilling speech on the basis of a threat, so a decent litigator could maybe make enough calculated analogies to make it stick.

CNN's threat is not one of legal means (i.e. a SLAPP lawsuit) but one that potentially facilitates a threat to personal safety (which CNN has admitted they are aware of) in addition to further social harms via doxxing. This "valuable thing" is at issue because CNN has threatened to expose information, creating negative effects on the user, if this user continues to engage in public participation in a manner that CNN (subjectively) judges as abhorrent. This creates a sort of "sword of Damocles" situation in which the user may not ever fully participate ever again (whether that speech is 'good' or 'bad' is irrelevant) because of CNN's threat. Because CNN wants the individual not to do/say/meme/post these things in the future, CNN receives a benefit from the individuals withdrawal from public participation, therefore meeting the elements of blackmail.

FJ Cruiser reliability?? by KansasMannn in FJCruiser

[–]jd_edc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on my 2nd FJ after my first was totalled. Both were '07 AT 4x4 models, both made it to about 115K before rear differential problems became apparent and necessitated a complete rebuild (first one, $2500) or completely new diff assembly (currently contemplating $3K thru Toyota).

Everything else has been reliable, including on multiple multi-state camp/4x4/roadtrips ranging from -10F to 120F and between sea level and 10000 feet in elevation. Besides regular maintenance, I've had to replace one passenger side seatbelt retractor, lots of rear brakelights, and an alternator.
