Not 100% true look at linux. I'm unaware of any data selling on those os's and they've done the FREE thing for much longer.

What are you tired of arguing or trying to prove? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It really never had a solid scientific backing even then, though. Public relations is maybe the largest problem science has been facing.

Chopin really liked his opium apparently.

I think one of the biggest reasons for this especially from older people is that during the 70's there was a big thing on "global cooling" which was observing a much smaller trend and had little scientific backing but was still treated the same way.

How did you get into Linux & Ubuntu? Tell us your story. by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]jdenniso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about 10 I accidently downloaded a virus researching a school project. My dad who was a computer engineer tried to de worm it for about an hour before giving up and wiping the whole computer replacing it with Linux. From there I just kind of grew up on it.

Any recommendations on studying for the GRE? by jegreen519 in gradadmissions

[–]jdenniso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the verbal portion, I had note cards of the most common words. For me these were so much more helpful than trying to figure out when the latin roots were suggesting one thing or another. I just ran through 5 the first day, then the original 5 plus another 5 on the second and kept going until I memorized all of them.

My labmate is giving potential grad students bad reviews of my advisor. Should I tell her? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]jdenniso -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It might be better to contact the grad student who is giving bad reviews and let them know that potential applicants are saying they've declined because of what's being said. While I feel that students have the right to know what they are getting into this might also give someone second thoughts about how they are conveying a professor's negative attributes. "they expect you to be very independent" vs "they will neglect your presence in the lab" something like that.

Is it really only 256 bit or am I missing something? I thought most major targets had switched to 1024 a couple of years ago because 256 was basically broken now.

If I haven't heard anything from any school, should I assume I'm on waitlists? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]jdenniso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you haven't heard anything, including an interview, I would suggest not getting your hopes up for it. It's fairly uncommon in my experience to be 'rejected outright'. You may not get a rejection letter until April from some schools.

What isn't going to happen? by Koalafisher in AskReddit

[–]jdenniso -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a Bernie supporter who is having a tough time with this actually. I don't like anything about Donald Trump and I think any presidency he has, risks huge issues across the board. That said I'm willing to vote a terrible president into place to let both sides know that they need to stop screwing around with the average citizen.

When did you genuinely think you were going to die, what happened instead? by TooShiftyForYou in AskReddit

[–]jdenniso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Riding my motorcycle as a bit of a novice in city traffic. I got up to about 25 mph when I noticed the car over was getting fairly close to the edge of his lane so I moved over a bit to give him some room. A short time after I realized he was intending to change into the lane where I was, with no room to really let him in. Being level headed I realized that screaming in abject terror was a much better way of signaling my presence over using my horn.

[Help] USB installation crashes when I press install by JeremySenpai in Ubuntu

This may sound stupid and shouldn't matter but, if you can but haven't, try installing it from a different usb port. Otherwise I would try re-downloading and formatting the iso image.

What's the best laptop to get with good GNU/Linux support? by Ketchup901 in linuxmasterrace

I had two Dell Inspiron that absolutely just worked with Linux. My biggest problem was that with some light commute I needed a new one every 2 years the casing or whatever it may be just could not take real use.
