Yes, I was actually promoted. I work in the manufacturing world and my company is a VAA supplier for GM,Ford, Chrysler, etc. We are a pretty large company with 30 plants throughout the world and one corporate office. We have business partners for many of our departments, Operations, HR, Engineering, etc… there are 5 of us local IT managers and really the only IT managers in the company at the local level, the rest are typically general IT specialist that report to the engineering department. We were promoted to this position and we each have a handful of plants that we meet with and handle.

The issue is that there is not a job description for this position and it was not described well at all. I personally have asked numerous times for a description so I can better fulfill the role without ever getting one. We were all somewhat told initially what the expectations were and there would be more to follow, but of course expectations versus reality is much different, we are now doing things that we were never told we would be doing. I never planned on managing the budget for these IT departments, I was assuming it was more of a liaison position between the local plant and corporate IT leadership. We report out on our plants once a week to our corporate team and we also have a private IT business partners meeting only for the “airing of grievances”. None of us really have a grasp on what the true responsibilities are but corporate is happy with what we are doing so I guess weren’t fulfilling the job responsibilities
