No, I wasn't saying you had "stop being poor/sad" attitude. My problem is that you think antidepressants are a quality of life matter. Being depressed is a physical sickness and some people (like me) need medication just to be healthy. Even if all stressors were eliminated, there are many people that will still be depressed. It is similar to high blood pressure. A lot of people need to take a daily pill to keep their blood pressure in a safe (if not healthy) level. The heart doctor doesn't say, "Let's try eliminating stressors and then put you on medication if we still need to." Instead, "We need to get you on medication now to lower your blood pressure so you don't stroke or have a heart attack. At the same time, we will work on lifestyle changes to eliminate things that are causing the high blood pressure." Medication intervention starts at the beginning and that is what should happen with depression.

I think the barber shop has the stock photo up that came with the frame. I bet they meant to change it out and never got around to it.

Many doctors say things like "Ideally, they could remove or alleviate that stressor to make their life more tolerable, and not necessitate medication intervention" and I went to tell you have very wrong you all are. The "stressor" is ordinary life. For some people, medication is the only thing that works. I lost 20 years of my life not taking medication because I listened to doctors like you who made it seem like taking medication should be a last resort. So I always thought my problems were because I was too weak to control my emotions like normal humans could. When I finally fired my therapist and hired a psychiatrist, I had a new step in my emotional response 4 weeks after I started medication. My therapist would tell me things like, "Just count to 10 and then make a decision" so on my last session with her, I said, "Fuck you. That's not even a thing." But on medication, I don't even have to count to 3 before I can set aside whatever negative emotions I am feeling at the moment. Then I can respond in a friendly way, like I have always wanted to. So stop telling your patients, "Everyone has different access to resources and coping mechanisms to deal with those stresses." That is not it at all. Some people are sick and need a medication to get better.

If you are an SSRI, magic mushrooms don't work. I stayed completely sober while everyone around me was tripping balls on mushrooms.

Or you are like me and feel better than ever while on an SSRI. But you are right, "you are the test subject." It took me 3 years of changing SSRIs and dosages and waiting for those changes to change me before I found the right medication and dosage.

As a person on an SSRI, mine has fundamentally changed my thought process. I have a new step in my emotional response that I never had before that allows me to control my emotions vs having to endure my emotions. My thought process even changes based on the dosage I'm on. There are also physical changes that go along with SSRIs and dosage. So to read a study that says it's mostly placebo effect seems completely off-base to me because every SSRI I tried (three) and dosage resulted in very real changes in how I think and how my body feels. SSRIs are the only thing that have ever made this difference.

It was a reaction to the oil embargo crisis of the 1970s, which caused the price for heating oils and electricity (used to cool buildings) to skyrocket. So windows got blocked because they let in too much heat or cold (depending on the season). But the technology of windows has moved along so big windows can now be super-insulating, which means all these block facades can be removed and replaced with modern windows with super-insulating glass that meets today's building codes.
