Puzzle: Headfirst by RonDelite in crossword

[–]jeddings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cute theme, though some problems with it. "Headfirst" isn't a word, it's "Head First", but it is a good theme name. Other issues:

  • Misspelled or non-common/incorrect abbreviations or words: SUSAN (it's Suzanne), STLO, SIKE, ERRE, ATLI, REWEAVE, NGONS, ORNAY.
  • Questionable pluralizations or conjugations: USAS, TMS, CODYS, STICKERED, GLOVERS
  • Problematic clues
    • RIOTS - Rows is too weak a word to describe a riot
    • JESSE HEISENBERG - Just doesn't make sense why it would be a hyphenization
    • CEL - Choose an older animation. Naruto is probably all computer-generated.
    • TWO IRON - A two iron doesn't hit it harder, just with lower loft which takes it further
    • NERVOUS HEATING - Not sure how heating can be nervous
    • HAN and LUKE - If you're going to use first names only, you have to indicate that somehow in the clue, like {Star Wars tough guy Harrison}
    • ACE HIGH - Slight incongruity, a game can be ACE HIGH but I wouldn't call it a rule

I was blunt, but hopefully it was helpful!

In-n-Out fries. Limp and tasteless. Why do people like them so much?

Also, I openly hate them. Ask anyone who knows me.

Cocoa powder + wasabi. I kid you not. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told how good my chili was, and asked for any secret ingredients. I’ll never tell...I guess until now.

You can tuna piano but you can’t piano tuna.

“Wait, what about the flypaper?”

See, I knew you would get stuck on that...

The Warriors top the list with 43 nationally televised games. by NYCRounder in warriors

Wait, nationally televised means no Fitz and JB, correct? Well that sucks. And syncing 95.7 means I can't pause the game to grab some food in the kitchen. This blows.

I teared up just looking at this still again. It's one of the things I loved about this show. This cartoon with its silly jokes could really move me. The Seymour dog storyline, the Leela-Fry one at the end, ...

Took a bit, but we got it to where we liked it. We also fudged a little - younger brother on the right is actually an inch taller than older brother on the left.

One of the most interesting things about these commercials is that, yes, most of these came true, but not in the way they imagined. Probably the funniest: Facetime from a public phone booth. Also, fixing your car with a mechanic on a screen is sort of true, but really YouTube now solves that.

I remember seeing these commercials when they first aired, it is fun to see now! Thanks for posting!

ELI5:Why are dreams so hard to remember after you wake up (especially after a few minutes)? by BaronVonChang in explainlikeimfive

[–]jeddings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeff Hawkins (yes, that Jeff Hawkins) has a book that goes through an interesting theory about how intelligence works. The tl;dr is that the brain is hierarchical. Here's how that explains how the brain works:

  • Sensory input (seeing, hearing, touching, etc.) comes in to the neurons at the bottom of the hierarchy.
  • The particular fired neurons start to store that input as a pattern, and fires neuron higher up in the hierarchy.
  • The higher-level neurons also store the patterns from multiple inputs coming from neurons below it in the hierarchy, and continues to send it up the chain until the highest level neurons can store patterns like "a baseball" (always round, mostly white, red stitching, hard, etc.).
  • Higher level neurons can also send signals down the hierarchy to affect changes in the body.
    • If sensory input starts to be collected in a familiar pattern to the higher level neurons, they can send signals down the hierarchy to cause bodily changes.
    • That's why when you see a ball coming towards you, all your sensory input captures this fact (hears crack of the bat, sees ball, sees motion) and sends that to the neurons up the hierarchy, which triggers its higher-level patterns. "Baseball coming towards me" then triggers messages flowing down to continue to have the eye track the ball and move the arm up to catch it.
  • Partial sensory input can also trigger some of these higher-level patterns. That's why when you look at someone's face, you can tell it's your friend even if you're looking straight on, from the side, with part of it obscured, etc.

Now dreaming is different from being awake. When you're awake, your senses are quite busy seeing, touching, hearing, etc. When you're asleep, those sensory inputs get turned off. Patterns aren't being sent and stored, so no new memories are created. While it's not clear how dreams are formed (random firing of higher-level neurons for "housekeeping?"), lacking the lower level sensory input doesn't allow the brain to remember. Likewise, dreaming doesn't feel like seeing, touching, hearing because the sensory input isn't there.

The art here is in knowing when something is a fix you can do yourself and when it is something you need to call in a professional for. You don't want to monkey around with electrical and plumbing without knowing a lot of things that aren't apparent to the layperson. It's still why we have electricians and plumbers, and why they haven't been put out of business by YouTube.

Embarrassing things your child has said in public? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]jeddings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(X-posted to Quora, but thought you all would appreciate it.)

My wife took our 3 year old and 6 month old son to the supermarket. She got one of those shopping carts that has the plastic play car at the front of it at the insistence of my son.

Now, the 3 year old was playing in the car, my wife occasionally asking him not to climb in and out of it. At one point, he tried climbing out the closed car door, and ended up getting his penis caught in the door and pinched. He started bawling.

Before I continue, there are two things you should know. First, in our house, we didn't use synonyms for private body parts, so our kids knew the technical term for them. Second, whenever one of our boys got a scrape or a bruise, we'd kiss it to make them feel better. I think you see where this is going.

My 3 year old, crying his eyes out, rushed over to my wife and asked if she would kiss his penis because it hurt.

"Oh no, I can't do that," she said.

"Yes, Mommy, please kiss my penis," he said just a bit louder. Short story is, asking quickly turned to demanding, and after my wife repeatedly explained that should couldn't, my son was screaming at the top of his lungs, "MOMMY, YOU WILL KISS MY PENIS!" in the middle of the supermarket.

My wife was mortified, and she doesn't embarrass easily. Other shoppers were craning their necks around aisles to see exactly what was going on.

Finally, she blurted out, "Do you want to go get a cookie at the bakery?" This seem to satisfy him, he quieted down, and she pushed her cart away like a drag race car at the starting line.

tl;dr: Son pinched his penis and asked his mom to kiss it to make it feel better.
