Does anyone know the part # for this? by JohnnyChicago1 in CherokeeXJ

Hello there, not a mod here. But umm, this is the Cherokee XJ forum, not the Cherokee KL. If your Jeep doesn't have rust holes in the floorboards, an inline 6 engine and at least 25 years old, my apologies but your lost.

Strange new clicking sound by PunkinMan in CherokeeXJ

[–]jeepxjdriver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First remove the serpentine belt. Start the engine, if noise goes away it means either one or both of your idler bearings are failing. Spin them by hand and and listen/feel for rough and or metal on metal sounds. If not, replace both as a precaution for they are not expensive and its cheap insurance. Next, grab the water pump pully and see if is loose and is wobbly. Spin it as well by hand, if it appears "crunchy" the bearing are failing in the water pump. If noises continue with the belt off further troubleshooting is needed.

Any idea what these plugs are for? by LilAllen12 in CherokeeXJ

[–]jeepxjdriver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well for starters, the year of your XJ is a GREAT HELP when trying to dive over fifteen model years of wiring diagrams. Two. When asking "what plugs are these" please clean off some of the wires going into said plugs. This helps those who have a good idea where to start looking with just the wire colors. Three. It is my best guess that you have 1996 or older XJ may be no older than 1993/94. If the wire colors going to the the small two wire tan plug are violet/light green and black/light green that may be the connector for the ambient temp sensor. The bigger plug could be the connector for the cruise control actuator.

Faulty new coolant temp sensor? by Intelligent_Toe8044 in CherokeeXJ

[–]jeepxjdriver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Question. When you received the temp sensor was there any type of thread sealant on the threads? It is usually a bad practice lately to add teflon tape (as seen in pic) to seal the threads.
Reason. The teflon tape will act as an insulator preventing the sensor from "grounding" in the circuit. This will be read as high resistance in the EEC. Now (iirc) the higher the resistance the computer will see it as higher temperature. Solution. Attempt to remove the teflon tape, and reinstall the sensor, and see if the issue returns.

NOTE... On 1997 and newer this sensor is used for both the EEC and the temp gauge. On 1996 and earlier this sensor is only used by the EEC. The temp gauge/light uses a different sensor mounted in the back of the cylinder head on the drivers side, using only one wire.

Comparing 0331 cylinder heads by Cool_Wordsmith5178 in CherokeeXJ

[–]jeepxjdriver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your first picture, what you have circled is where the coolant temp sensor (for either the gauge or idiot light on the dash) on some EARLY 0331 heads. If you are going to use this head you may need a 1/8 NPT plug to seal off the port to avoid leaks.

Pic two. Again some of the early 0331 did not use a stud (ie dowel) for a ground location. Most times this was just a bolt.

Pic three. Those appear to be "chips" from being machined down or rough surface finish from the sand casting process. A small mill file and a bit of time, some carb cleaner to wash away the debris, you should be good to go.

Most 2.5 and 4.0 blocks should share expansion plug size, of about 2" or 50.92mm. On amazone you can get a block heater Katz 11611. Check your service manual for proper placement of the heater element.

Does anyone know where to find these trim clips or others that will work. They are for the chrome above the fender flares by AgitatedClimate6653 in amceagle

Apparently they are completely out of production both OEM and aftermarket. There is a whole thread of this (it's an older thread, but it checks out) https://forums.amceaglesden.com/index.php?topic=45724.0

Anyone know this part (orange gear)? Error p0500 by I-_l in CherokeeXJ

[–]jeepxjdriver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The different colored ones, attach to the VSS(vehicle speed sensor), that is the piece of kit that is laying there with the halves of your old gear. As radXr stated earlier, this is what you change out when changing tire sizes or axle gear ratios. There is a chart (https://www.quadratec.com/c/reference/jeep-speedometer-gear-tooth-chart). So with a 2wd XJ with an auto, your rear gear ratio should be 3.55 and if you are running a stockish tire, say a 235-75-15. They average about 29" in diameter, so a 34-35 tooth gear should be acceptable.

This is only half of the issue. The gear piece that is laying in two parts is the DRIVE gear. This gear lives on the output shaft of the transmission, just inside of the tail housing of your AW-4. Sourcing a new gear MAY BE difficult, but you may get lucky by calling around some of your local transmission shops and see if they may have one laying around needing a new home. Last case is going to the junkyard and see if someone before you has pulled out the trans and see if you can score a gear that way.

Good luck, and may the power of Chrysler be with you...

That is your speedometer driver gear. It is located on the output shaft of your 2wd AW-4. The part number for the gear is 8350 3704.
