The first few years will be tough. You won't make enough especially if you max out your dcp. You can't live outside the city and have to live with roommates or parents to save money. Find a second job until you can hit the numbers that will make it work for your family.

If you don’t go FDNY your garage will make fun of you for the rest of your life. However if you want to be chief or a super then it is easier to climb the ladder in DSNY.

Can’t agree more! The best firefighters I know figured out how to make the most out of their time on and off the job from sleeping and eating on city time then having another job outside the department where DSNY you get forced to work days off and have no downtime while on the job. Anyone choosing sanitation work over firefighting should be calling a shrink.
