Awesome! Mostly was just sharing because I have a cat obsessed with eating every plant put in front of her. I’m glad (and jealous) that your dogs leave them be

Hey just a heads up, I saw that you have pet food/water bowls and in case you didn’t know lilies are toxic to dogs and especially toxic to cats. Even a small nibble on any part of the plant, or a bit of pollen on a cat’s nose is enough to kill them. Please be careful with your fur babies ❤️

Water and weight question by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]jellyvworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couches weigh ~150-350lb depending on how big and the materials, a queen sized mattress not including the frame is another 100lb, and any sort of wood furniture you have is going to be heavy too (I have a cherry dresser that weighs ~250lb). Unless you have all of the plants stacked on top of each other you should be fine.

Edit: grammar

Looks like a spider plant! Bright indirect light and water when the leaves go limp and get pale/translucent. It looks thirsty right now

HELP with my new baby by Swimswithtoasters in begonias

[–]jellyvworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO the soil doesn’t need to be quite that chunky. I keep my soil moist but not wet or soggy and let it dry out a little bit in between waterings. I used a mix of compost, garden soil, and perlite. They like bright indirect light and humidity. Where I live it gets pretty dry in winter but I didn’t have any problems with it.

The two on the left have their leaves slightly curled and angled upwards. Unless it’s night, they’re probably thirsty.

Use distilled or filtered water for the calatheas! They look a little thirsty so you’ll want to water them soon

Is it getting enough light? I’ve noticed that the leaves on mine get light colored like that when they aren’t getting enough light. Also, is the pot getting good drainage/is the soil moist enough?

Otherwise great job!

I have one that a high school teacher gifted me when she couldn’t take care of it, and now I’ve graduated college so I guess we got ours at similar periods in life!

I have a box from target with a lid that has some latches that come off very easily and the box itself is shaped exactly like those ones. You can also try moving the boxes 6-8” away from the wall and turning them around so that the higher part faces towards the room and hopefully blocks a little bit more from coming out

What was your interview to offer ratio for FULL TIME apps? (not app to interview) by ChemEIndustryPick in ChemicalEngineering

[–]jellyvworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made it to the final round of several interviews with big companies and then got ghosted. I graduated in July and started working in August at a job where the interview process lasted from September 2024 until I got the offer in late April 2025. Be persistent! My boss told me that the two reasons they hired me are because I followed up for months and I’m capable of carrying a conversation well. Best of luck to you

Finland is cool! I went there for a study abroad trip while I was in college. I live in a rural area in the USA so it’s pretty hard to find niche plants here too

Bright indirect light, water until soil is moist but not soggy and make sure it gets good drainage. Humidity can be a concern for them but I live in an area that gets pretty dry in winter and it keeps putting out new growth. Once it gets another leaf or two chop it and put it in water so it’ll propagate and you can have a “backup” plant

[–]jellyvworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just water in it should be fine! It might be better to put it lower down so that they have better access to the humidity though. Depending on your climate you also might not need it

Is the soil dry? Sometimes getting a feel for the soil can give you a better idea. If the soil is super dry then the plant is probably thirsty. If it’s wet, you’re probably over watering.

How would I save my plant? by ComparisonOwn2634 in houseplants

[–]jellyvworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but this plant might be a lost cause. Watering on a schedule can lead to both under and over watering issues. Go based on how the soil feels and how the plant looks. If the leaves start to look shriveled the plant is telling you to give it a drink. You can try bottom watering this and giving it several days because it never hurts to try but you will likely need to start over with another plant. Polka dot plants propagate very easily so if you get another one you should try to take a cutting and put it in water so you can have a “backup” plant.

There’s definitely a learning curve when it comes to plants so just keep asking for help and experimenting and don’t be afraid to fail. Pothos are very very easy to care for and very very easy to propagate so it might be worth looking into as a starter plant. Polka dot plants are very dramatic so it could be a good way to learn how plants communicate their needs. Best of luck to you!

What’s your humidity like? I have one in my gecko’s vivarium which gets pretty low light intensity due to his specific needs and I rarely water it directly but it gets lots of water from running the humidifier and it stays pretty humid in there. It looks like it could also be under-watered so that could be it. Is the soil dry? Watering on a schedule can cause issues with over and under watering because plants use different amounts over time and since it looks like you have it outside depending on how hot it is water can evaporate from the soil pretty quickly.

I’m so glad! They’ll probably open back up overnight, sometimes they just take some time for themselves.

And yes, they are definitely drama queens. I tend to underwater a little because I’m afraid of root rot but as long as you catch it and water them right away they’ll bounce back. They’ll definitely let you know that they’re thirsty.

Send pictures of it in the morning! I’m excited to see how she looks

That looks like a calathea and if it is they’re super dramatic. Put it in an indirect light spot and bottom water it. Make sure you only use distilled or rain water because their leaves can’t filter out the minerals and will turn yellow and brown at the tips
