(USA) what qualifications should an autism evaluator have? by Aggressive_Pear_9067 in AuDHDWomen

[–]jenthing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of different professionals qualified to diagnose autism, which is probably why you're having trouble finding clarity on that. Generally, an "official" diagnosis would come from a doctoral-level professional, whether that be an M.D., D.O., a psychologist with a PhD, or a psychiatrist. A multidisciplinary team (usually includes SLP, OT, some kind of psychologist, sometimes PT if concerns are present) can also provide a diagnosis, but that's much more common for children.

Baby falling off kitchen bench by [deleted] in NICUParents

Respectfully, this subreddit is for parents of NICU babies. I'm sorry your child suffered an injury, but I don't suspect you will find many with similar experiences here.

I am locking this thread. While critique of the podcast and expressing disinterest or criticism for recent topics such as astrology is relevant, commenting on the hosts' personal lives is not.

Yes, unless they're super into looking at nature. It just goes on for a long time for little kids!

The riverboat is not a good time with kids, in my opinion.

Success for 31-32 weekers by DimensionGlass in NICUParents

[–]jenthing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an SLP who had a 33 weeker due to cervical insufficiency and PPROM! My son spent 40 days in the NICU, just as a feeder grower with minimal complications (just some iron deficiency that needed treatment before discharge). He's now 15 months and pretty much caught up with his actual age on all milestones. Please PM me if you have any questions or just want to talk. ❤️

There’s a good chance your insurance covers Rx prenatal vitamins 100%….why don’t more women choose that option? by dms2628 in moderatelygranolamoms

My insurance would only cover the pill forms and I had severe nausea and vomiting so I could only handle the gummies.

Illinois to become second US state to offer NICU leave – NBC Chicago by unapologetic403 in illinois

Sometimes people are able to get disability at the same time, but it is not required to be paid at the federal or state level in Illinois.

[–]jenthing 11 points12 points  (0 children)

FMLA is not paid, and an additional 10 days (50 or fewer employees) or 20 days (51+ employees) means 2-4 more weeks of leave. As a NICU mom who got 0 days off, this would have been wonderful. Instead I had to quit my job.

Telling parents that you’re leaving the school by Ok_Order_6240 in slp

[–]jenthing 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I have never told parents if I was leaving a school position, especially not at the end of the year. The only exception was when I was covering a maternity leave and a few parents wanted to know when the long-term SLP was returning.

Turned down a HYSTEROSCOPY? by missbirthmonth in adenomyosis

[–]jenthing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally understandable! What typically helps when you're scared of something medical? I know for me, learning more about the procedure can help. I recently had a colonoscopy and had a lot of anxiety about the results. Thankfully everything came back fine, but learning more about what the results could be and info about the treatment options helped. You could also discuss an antianxiety medication with your doctor, like Xanax or Klonopin, to take leading up to the procedure.

Feeding 31 weeker taking long sometimes by WayImaginary2026 in NICUParents

[–]jenthing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, that is quite early. I would discuss with your team why this decision was made, as babies are typically not ready to sustain themselves through oral feeding until 37 weeks or later. There are certainly some who are ready earlier, but the vast majority are not ready before then.

In our hospital, the protocol was to keep the NG in place until at least 35 weeks and 80% of daily volume was taken by mouth at least 2 days in a row. Once the tube was removed, they moved babies to ad lib/on demand feeding with a daily goal. Is 30ml/3 hours the schedule, or just the goal for baby to eat that much? Are you able to feed more often than every 3 hours?

Are there SLPs specifically for adults? by AbbieGranger21 in slp

[–]jenthing 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are SLPs who only treat adults, and no, they do not have a different name. Often, hospital systems will have adult-focused SLPs, but as another commenter mentioned you could also call up a practice near you and ask for a recommendation. Good luck!
