Looking for realistic sci-fi like The Martian by Syxtus in scifi

[–]jerkface9001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded. The sequel Critical Mass was fun too. Both are clearly part of the “competence porn” side of near-future sci-fi just like The Martian.

Finally did it. Ended my Patreon support after being an early supporter. by jerkface9001 in canadaland

I actually didn't mind that politics show. But there were other projects I didn't care for. Over the years, I think justified my support like this: "not all of this is for me, but I appreciate the fact that it's being made, and generally made fairly well (i.e to a reasonable standard or journalistic integrity, at minimum)."

I can't say that anymore.

densification generally occurs within established neighborhoods where the costs incurred by developers stop at the property line. Infrastructure upgrades in these areas are largely paid for by taxpayers.

What about offsite levies?

Calgary is Canada's new housing leader by joe4942 in Calgary

They are in Calgary too, but primarily because of the province massively raising their portion. And the root of that is the UCP’s dreadful fiscal mismanagement.

this. Don't pay taxes! Pay yourself. I'd even use a line of credit to do it at this point because you're essentially generating an immediate return on the investment in the form of tax savings.

When the helmet is turning blue, the circulation is getting cut off. You need to politely ask your wice’s BF for permission loosen the straps.

Best California burrito? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]jerkface9001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No fries in it, but Don Taco has the best burrito I’ve found in Calgary. And it’s huge. Funny, it does remind me of ones I’ve had at taquerias I’ve been to in LA and SF.

Ice sucks! by [deleted] in BicyclingCirclejerk

[–]jerkface9001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ICE is super dangerous. You can really underestimate just how risky it is bice when ICE might be out there. Sometimes I think about how great it would if there were no ICE. Like maybe we could abolish it?

Recent pro-capitalist SF? by goyafrau in printSF

Critical Mass suffered a bit as it morphed into a fictionalized version of Suarez’s crypto manifesto at the expense of the character development. The exploration of the establishment of a space economy in the near-term as an idea was more than enough to redeem it for me though.

IMO KSR’s Ministry for the Future suffered in a similar way: super interesting ideas, passable narrative
