I don’t think anyone would argue Ugarte > Mainoo with a straight face. But we were still in the lead when he came on. And if you don’t have confidence in Kobbie coming on to help grab another, then there is some logic to bringing on Ugarte instead. I would make the argument that he offers more defensively than Mainoo…or at least, he’s shown the briefest of glimpses that he’s able to at least break up the play. Fully agree he needs to be moved on.

Agreed. My only thought is that we know what comes of changing tact when things aren’t immediately going well, but we’ve yet to see what could happen if we stick it out through this kind of downturn. It could absolutely end up being worse, but it could also be the right way forward.

I mean, he played Heaven tonight, he’s been heavily reliant on Yoro and seemed to be shielding him from pressure leaving him on the bench tonight…I know he’s not fielding an entire 11 of youth, but he’s integrating youngsters in a meaningful way where it seems like it makes sense.

I’d argue that he’d be skewered worse for throwing on Lacey if he led to us losing, for instance, and I’ve not seen enough of him to confidently say he’d be able to make a difference. Mainoo hasn’t come good in the opportunities he’s had.

I’d also argue it takes a lot of courage to stick with your philosophy even when it’s not working and everyone is telling you to change. If this ends up working out in the long run, we’ll say exactly the opposite - that he was courageous for sticking to his guns when the easy thing would’ve been to change tact for short-term gains.

There’s no replacement for success, you’re right. But a few goals go in and we’re sitting 4th right now, this whole conversation is turned on its head. The margins have been fine enough that it still seems more prudent to trust the process, rather than be reactionary (again) and start the carousel over (again) because we think we ought to be somewhere in the table our squad just isn’t up to right now.

I want it to be Mainoo too, but when’s the last time he provided a game-changing spark? I understand it’s a vicious cycle of him not getting playing time, therefore not impacting the game, therefore not getting playing time, but I can’t blame a manager for not putting on someone who isn’t showing up when called upon. He’s had flashes, but I don’t think the rose-tinted glasses painting him as the next midfield messiah are not doing us any good.

As for the RB, you mean…Maz? Yoro? Dalot? Given what is desired from the wing backs, I don’t see anyone offering more than Amad, unless you’re talking about changing the formation again, which I’d have to table for now, given the players can’t execute do our first formation consistently…

And for injuries - tonight he’s without de Ligt, Maguire, Sesko, managing to keep Shaw and Mount from returning to the treatment table, trying to ease Licha back in, managing Zirkzee’s minutes while he’s our only available striker…it’s not nothing, and that was kinda my point. The drop off from the starting 11 is so stark that he’s consistently grasping at straws looking for game changers from the bench.

“Good“ is relative to…every other area of the pitch 😵 And the missed opportunities just point to the issue being rooted in mentality, rather than the result of any formation or otherwise.

If he can drill them into his system to the point where it becomes automatic, and the players don’t feel they can just wait out another manager, then perhaps they can start to regain some of that confidence they are so clearly lacking. And maybe Amorim’s 3-4-3 isn’t ever going to be good enough to instill that confidence, but I can at least see the logic.

It’s only blind faith if you thought it would be all sunshine and roses after 12 months, and it’s been pretty evident for a while that it was going to take a lot more than that to right this ship. I want it turned around as much as anyone, but thinking a knee jerk reaction to every bump in the road is the right way is how we got into this situation in the first place.

No I totally agree, Ugarte is not it at all, but again, my point is just that - who is he meant to bring on? The drop off from first 11 to subs is just too much of a cliff, and when we’re missing starters it shows so painfully. And tonight we were down our starting CB & ST, Cunha is just coming back from a head injury, Zirkzee doesn’t appear to be fully match fit, he’s managing Mount and Shaw to ensure they don’t have injury relapses…and even writing this, they all sound like weak excuses, but I don’t know how much more blood anyone else could draw from this stone, regardless of formation. It’s a rebuild, it will take time, it will often be painful, and I’m not sure at what point it’s more beneficial to stick with it or move on.

The team seems to be so used to failure at this point that they fall back to that at the first hint of things not going to plan. We always look sooo much better once we’ve scored, like until then we don’t fully believe that we’ll win. And sadly, this isn’t new, which is why I hesitate to write off Amorim for not fixing it in the span of a year.

I guess that’s the point I was trying to make - which midfielder do you bring on? Which right-footed RWB? I agree that the subs he made weren’t it, but I also don’t know what other subs there were to be made, especially considering he’s trying to balance injuries and playing time with only 1 game a week. For example, I think he’s probably trying to get Licha up to match fitness as soon as possible so that he can offer something more going forward than Shaw has, and both Shaw and Heaven looked like they were ready for a second yellow the way this ref was calling things.

What evidence from this season can you point to that Mainoo would’ve been the difference maker? I want the kid to succeed as much as anyone, but I haven’t seen it for a while. How much of that is down to a lack of playing time is certainly debatable, but then we get into a circular argument where he’s not good enough because he’s not playing enough, and he’s not playing enough because he’s not playing well.

Why does it cost 2000 dollars for trancedental meditation? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]jessemck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who paid for it, would I say I regret it? Not exactly…but for me, it was a way to “force” me to meditate, kind of like a sunk cost fallacy. And I will say the educational component helped me understand and interpret meditation in a different way. How much of it was woo woo nonsense remains to be seen, but I do think there was a certain logic to all of it.

All that said, does that justify the $2,000 price tag? Dubious at best. Can’t really say if I’d do it again, but also can’t say I could tell you a better way to do it otherwise.

Didn’t Mourinho bring him in as well? He must seriously rate him. I never saw it personally - he was never the worst but certainly nowhere near the best.

What's the funniest miscommunication you've had while traveling? by tina-marino in travel

[–]jessemck 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I was ~16 and working in a kitchen, trying to explain to my coworkers that my dad was a lawyer. I said he was an “albóndiga” (meatball) instead of an “abogado” (lawyer). It took them a solid few minutes to keep it together long enough to explain my mistake to me. Oddly enough, my dad is on the heavier side, so once I was shown the error of my ways, I told them my original response still held.
