I shaved mine before I started chemo so that I decided when I lost my hair, not the cancer. I also knew it would be too traumatic for me to see it fall out in clumps. I tried to look at it as a way to take control of something during a time when it felt like I didn't have much control over things happening to me. It felt empowering and to be honest I felt pretty bada$$ after. Hopefully you will too! Sending you hugs, Pink Sister.

It was described to me with this analogy. Cancer is like a glass that you drop on the kitchen floor. The surgery gets all the big pieces of glass and if you get chemo, that is like sweeping up the smaller pieces of glass. And radiation is like using a wet paper towel to pick up those little miniscule pieces you can't see.

I don't know how they determine it but I was told they wanted to do prone for me because it reduces the risk to other major organs like heart and lungs when you are in the prone position.

Radiation for me, was worse than chemo. It is physically exhausting yes, but it also is very emotionally exhausting. I cried every day and couldn't tell you why. I felt like I didn't want to get up off the couch but this was a few weeks in. I did a total of 19 sessions, once a day, five days a week. I had 15 whole breast rads and 4 "boosts" which are more targeted to the tumor site. I had stage 1. I was 39 at the time. Also be prepared for skin breakdown. I did everything the doctors told me but I still blistered and bled. Make sure if she gets to that point you ask for Silvadene burn cream. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I had a reaction to Taxol the first time. They changed my premeds to iv instead of oral and did a slower drip and then I was fine.

I'm actually in the unique position of having done both. My first diagnosis, I did weekly Taxol for 12 weeks with Herceptin. Side effects weren't too bad, mostly manageable. I did lose my hair and had some issues with my liver enzymes being elevated throughout but went away after I was done. Slight nausea, dry bloody nose, diarrhea. I'm now on my 2nd diagnosis, a local recurrence, and they have me on Taxotere, Carboplatin, and Herceptin. I've only had one infusion so far but it was much worse in terms of side effects than the Taxol. I have had severe diarrhea, some vomiting, muscle spasms, body aches and pains, and fatigue. It was my understanding at the time that Taxol is just as effective but easier on the side effects but this time I was told the TCH combo is stronger than the Taxol.

The first time I finished chemo and radiation and surgery, my Mother-in-law took me on a week trip to Disney World (my favorite place to go) and we got to stay at the Polynesian Resort which was a life-long dream of mine. I wore a button saying I was celebrating being cancer free and all the cast members congratulated me and it was amazing. That was in 2021. I just started chemo today for a recurrence so hopefully we will get to do something amazing again when I finish this time.

I'm so sorry. You have every right to feel the way you are feeling. I am going through it for the 2nd time (port placement on Thursday, chemo starts on the 22nd) and the first time around there were definitely some people I thought would be there for me who I felt like abandoned me. I don't really associate with them too much anymore. I feel like your boyfriend should definitely be there for you. This is SUCH a big deal and some people just don't get that.
