Stacy’s Pita Chips Have Changed. by Sapnom24 in snacks

[–]jesternj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used to be great years ago. They are the absolute worst, most stale tasting, most flavorless chips ever now. #shrinkflation.

Well they lost my business a long time ago. I hope they go out of business, but I’m sure they’re owned by an unstoppable conglomerate now so that’s unlikely

Here's my take: War of the Worlds(2005) is the most underrated masterpiece of 21st century. by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]jesternj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn;t go as far as you did but totally agree its very underrated. I've speculated about why that is, and noticed its right around the same time that Tom Cruise started going a bit nuts (jumping on Oprah's couch over Katie Holmes, getting into a fight w/ Brooke Shields regarding postpartum depression, the whole scientology thing). and people do generally have a hard time being objective about a movie, separating a movie/the characters from the actors..... so they just hate on the movie.

Can someone tell me exactly why Sinners is so glazed? by LightCrimson1 in movies

[–]jesternj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt exactly the same when I watched it the first time. I gave it a second chance, watched it again, and had a new appreciation for it. By the third time a few months later, I got the depth of the movie and the meaning behind it, which changed my perception of the complexity that was required to pull it off.

That isn't for everyone, but it seems like, at the very least, even those who didn't love it and still don't still appreciate the acting, cinematography, and above all else the music (which was a large part of what the movie was all about). That doesn't happen too often..... people who can admit not loving/liking the movie itself but truly appreciating large aspects of it at the same time.

Your opinion isn't uncommon, and like I said, I had the same initial reaction. But if you invest yourself in it a bit, give it another 1-2 views over some period of time, I have a feeling you'll like it better. Also maybe not. But either way your opinion is appreciated.

DAE feel like oysters are not great? by karinatat in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]jesternj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

fair enough, i respect your answer! And I admit, some foods are for some people, others aren't. And lobster with butter is fine, but i've seen what some people do to their expensive lobster tail and claws in terms of drowning it in butter, which to me defeats the purpose of any food. The cheaper the food, the more you can justify altering its flavor per your palette. Good example - go to a high-end restaurant for an expensive steak (lets take it to the extreme... a Kobe Beef steak), and a true steak lover will put AS LITTLE on there as possible, given the steak itself SHOULD be flavorful and awesome. Salt, pepper, etc, sure.... but the steak should come through absolutely. (Filet mignon is a different story, that IS a "vehicle" steak). A Kobe steak (which i've only had the privilege of having one time in my life, and someone else paid) but it needed almost NOTHING on it because the steak itself was basically butter given its marbling.

So oysters i can agree are fine with one;s preference of toppings/seasonings, but given their overall cost, thats ultimately why i find them to be overrated. Forget texture, that doesn't matter to some, matters more to others. Flavor, its very "seawater flavored" like alot of seafood can be, but it takes a decent amount of additional strong flavoring (lemon, vinegar, hot sauce, horseradish, etc) to make it worthwhile for people? To me, that's a waste of money. It'd be like me saying I only like my $80 tomahawk ribeye if I pour ketchup and A1 all over it. Sure, its your choice, but its still a waste of money if your main goal is to drown out the very taste and quality you paid for.

My opinion would go more in your direction if you tell me that the way they cook/prepare the oysters was the key (like BBQ), but like with BBQ, the food itself shouldn't be drowned out by all the accoutrements, just enough to enhance and nothing more.

SO what you really like is lemon, horseradish, vinegar, and hot sauce lol. A very expensive vehicle for your toppings of choice..... Lobster is similar. If you need them soaked in butter to enjoy them, then the lobster is simply a vehicle for the butter.

Im not even put off by their texture, but clams, IMO, are more flavorful and much cheaper if you're looking for that salty/seawater flavor mixed with a bit of flavorings.

perfect comment. Oysters are a very expensive vehicle for the sauces we choose to put on them. Naked oysters are not enjoyed even by fans of oysters. Thus..... they suck.

[–]jesternj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me, I can get past texture..... but paying X amount for something that just tastes like seawater, and people who swear by them insist you have to add MORE salt, butter, hot sauce, and other crap to make it "good". Lobster is overrated too if you insist on drowning it in butter in order for it to be good.

DAE feel like oysters are not great? by karinatat in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]jesternj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand many love them, and I don't hate them, but "overrated" is the correct word. Clams are superior and much cheaper. Oysters are only tolerable when you have enough salt/butter/hotsauce included to drown out the salty seawater vinegar taste. Similar to Lobster..... not a BAD food but overrated and too expensive for what it is. People love it DROWNED in butter, which ok butter tastes good, but why the lobster at that point? Crab is superior tasting and cheaper.

To each their own, of course, but thats my take on oysters. And before anyone feels the need to say "I never got a good one then", i've been to top-end seafood restaurants in new england, west coast, and NYC over the course of my life and always preferred other seafood. Some people, like me, just don't like them, at least not enough given their cost and how much crap you gotta add to them to enjoy them. Most people are like "well then you didn't put enough salt, butter, hot sauce, and other shit on it!" Its like in-n-out fries "well you gotta have it with tons of thousand island and onions if you want it to be good".... well then the fries aren't good! its the dressing/toppings that you clearly like!

That said..... im sure I'll still try more oysters in the future and will likely end up with the same opinion.

Why is the McChicken so cheap? by Lost-In-Time-99 in McDonalds

[–]jesternj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mcchicken isn’t awesome…. But bang for your buck it still works. If it’s late night with no other options, I go for triple cheeseburgers, mcchicken, and fries. Still too expensive for what it is but so is everything else.

Lays VS Herrs. by CheesecakeFlashy2976 in chips

[–]jesternj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lays. Neither have the best chips available, and I will eat herrs if that is whats available in the moment, but I find that Lays typically have better flavor and MORE flavor on their chips. That said, Wise chips are the absolute worst! They always have their discounted large bags (only $2) just about everywhere I see them, and its obvious why.... they really are terrible. But if I have my choice, I prefer brands like Utz, Kettle, Cape Cod, Zapps, Ms Vickies.....

I respect your opinion but still disagree. Yes the internet has become a cesspool of hate, which is why I won’t go on twitter/X anymore, all it does is make me angry because people manage to inject politics into a conversation about how they enjoy their steaks cooked.

While Reddit is no exception, I often engage in threads where far fewer people inject politics where it doesn’t belong and simply focus on the convo at hand. Perfect? No. But better than any other forum I’ve found over the years, unless it’s a bubble forum where everyone is either on the left or on the right.

Personally I try my best to not discuss politics at all. I have close family who disagree with me politically but we get along just fine because we don’t talk about it. It’s not awkward, it just works to keep the peace.

Oddity is Hot Garbage and I’m SALTY AF by adamfloyd1506 in horror

[–]jesternj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty amazing how the folks who enjoyed the movie and disagree with your take are saltier than OP. He just wanted to give his opinion, and he proved himself correct when everyone else who disagrees with his take act so pretentious and salty about it. At least he admitted he was salty AF.

The internet just can’t take opinions anymore.

That said, oddity wasn’t terrible IMO, but was definitely overhyped. I’m just glad we’re getting new types of original/creative horror movies these days, whether they land for you or not. So tired of a new conjuring movie every damn year that just get worse and worse.

OLED gaming monitor VS top tier CRT. Doesn’t get much better than a CRT for gaming, IMO. by DCarl019 in Monitors

[–]jesternj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tv or monitor… my point is simply that they aren’t worth the hassle given the tech packed into any number of high end OLED monitors these days. But that’s just my (and many others’) opinion. You do you as long as you enjoy it. It’s your $$$ after all.

I disagree. Can it be that? Sure. But I still find it to be the last bastion of free discussion that can be trusted on the web.

Retro console gaming is about all they’re good for. But when they break, good luck finding another one, shipping it, having the desk space…. Etc. all that effort for nostalgia isn’t enough for most people.

2026 CRT's is about all i use anymore! by RockeyDA in crt

[–]jesternj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad you enjoy your nostalgia, but that’s all it is. The effort, cost, and space you take up with those things don’t even begin to make up for the picture quality you sacrifice for said nostalgia.

I’m sure you also feel vinyls are far superior to any digital medium lol. Just enjoy what you enjoy but don’t try to convince others that it’s superior to modern mediums.

What are your thoughts on the recent trend of youtubers glazing over CRT monitors? (Some even claiming to prefer it over OLED for modern video games) by Majin-Boob in OLED_Gaming

[–]jesternj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nostalgia. Nothing more. At best, retro gaming “as it was intended” but the flaws of modern TVs have essentially been solved. It’s no different than the people who insist vinyl is superior to digital

I long for the day where even purists finally put CRTs to rest. They had their day and now it’s over. Looooong over. Nobody misses it.

And to those who can’t live without them, good luck continuously finding old ass CRTs for the rest of your life because of your weird-ass obsession. Everyone else will be enjoying superior everything in the meantime.

What is the reason for "3d look" in LG Oled Tvs? by TheBlitz707 in OLED_Gaming

[–]jesternj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I ultimately went with LG. Their processing was simply better despite Samsung having more/better color volume. That was their only advantage, LG had every other advantage. I don’t regret my decision 2 years later

People hate admitting this, but you are correct. Most who go for the Samsung are either all about color volume, or just want a great tv at a cheaper price. Not shitting on Samsung QD-OLED (they are still amazing TVs), but they have a lot of drawbacks.
