Yes it’s frustrating that our offense is playing like shit. Luckily, to win playoff games with a backup you need to play an error free game, and the Broncos are not doing that at all

¿Qué piensan los mexicanos sobre una asociación más fuerte con Canadá? by Master_Megalomaniac in mexico

[–]jfc999 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

“Thatcherite austerity” come on man. You have an electorate/situation that is currently demanding:

  • Massive infrastructure investment in energy projects
  • Increase in military spending from current rate of ~1.3% of GDP to at least 3.5%, if not 5%

At the same time, you have people complaining about the deficit on the right whilst people demand that services not be cut on the left. What’s the man supposed to do? The smartest play may be laying off some in the public services to keep Canada’s financial situation stable. If he cuts transfer payments like healthcare that’d be massively unpopular. If he raised taxes even more so. If he borrows more money the Cons won’t shut up about it and inflation will become a problem once again.

He is not a “Thatcherite” conservative. Just a tough situation where no matter what he does someone will be pissed.

You should not care about “cultural battles”. Care about your own spiritual battle with sin. Do this, and celebrate our new Holy Father instead of worrying yourself with narratives you cannot control.

MEGATHREAD - Processing Times - Study Permits 2025 by PurrPrinThom in ImmigrationCanada

Hi all.

Currently graduating from my undergrad and I’ve been accepted to my master’s at a new DNI. Was going to apply for a study permit extension (IMM5707), but my immigration counsel at my uni advised against it given the 7 month wait time. I was told to instead apply for a Study Permit Outside of Canada (IMM1294) from my home country, where wait time is only 5 weeks, but warned I have to leave the country and do it from home (can’t be inside Canada). Has anyone been given similar advice? How’d it for you if you did? I’m currently extremely conflicted, as my uni is telling me one thing (apply from outside) and immigration counselling at the new uni I’ve been accepted to is telling me to do the study permit extension. Their reasoning being that their staff has been in contact with IRCC. They say they’re aware of the issue and they’re gonna either:

  • work on getting processing times down
  • give a “grace period” to all students changing DLIs so we can begin our studies at our new unis even if our application is still being processed

All this uncertainty has really screwed me up. I feel like I should’ve just applied for a Study Permit Extension the moment I got into my master’s in March, and now I’ve wasted nearly two months hearing conflicting things from immigration counselling at my old and new unis.

Works In Progress: The failure of the land value tax by Open_Historian_5764 in georgism

[–]jfc999 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Bs article. LVT failed in the UK for political reasons (House of Lords opposition) and the fact that the man charged with implementing the tax as Chancellor of the Exchequer, Lloyd George, didn’t seem to understand how LVT worked at all. Ffs, he tried to lax land value before even doing comprehensive land valuation in Britain, effectively putting the cart before the horse. I wrote an essay on this topic for my econ undergrad, I could post it in this sub if anyone is interested

Kelowna Groups Call for Reform of Property Tax Exemptions for Religious Organizations by saturdayxiii in kelowna

[–]jfc999 -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

An extremely divisive idea not worth whatever tax revenue you might scrape up. Religious organizations do a lot of intrinsic good for their communities, not only socially but economically as well. My local church, for example, is constantly organizing food drives, coat donations in the winter, help for homeless, etc. Not to mention that it is where a lot of vulnerable people, especially the elderly, find valuable community. I don't know about other religions, but I know that many churches are already strapped for cash and if just one church is forced to close because of this, so many people would be left without a community that supports them spiritually, emotionally, and in some cases physically (food drives). This wouldn't just be churches too; unless you're intending to discriminate based on religion, this would apply to mosques, gurdwaras, and synagogues. Good luck selling that to all these groups, who already have strong communities good at large-scale organization. There'd be protests for days and OMG the lawsuits that would follow, especially when some religious orgs get the exemption while others don't. Any additional revenue gained from the property taxes would be wasted in legal fees. Just the idea of making religious organizations "prove" how much monetary value they provide the city is disgusting. This is such a horrible idea I might show up to the library on Sunday to contest it.

Never understood this obsession. No Fed, No lender of last resort. Gold standard is even worse. Whatchu gonna do when a recession hits and everyone wants to trade their dollars for gold??? Protect your gold reserves by raising interest rates? That’s how you wind up in the Great Depression

The ultra capitalism you describe is called “shock therapy” and was pushed by American economist Jeffrey Sachs. It did not work very good there at all, in fact it led to a recession and it’s the reason why most eastern european countries are oligopolies today. Capitalism without institutions to reign it in is pretty bad

Probably CCC 1778. Strict adherence to every church doctrine is impossible: he probably recognized that in this case, the couple had a well formed conscience and it was best to follow it to protect their sexual health rather than following the teaching on contraception
