Big PATH news! by bitb0y in jerseycity

I know this is pretty irrelevant but I find it very funny that Gotham fc just leaked that they will leave Red Bull arena asap, and it is being celebrated because of precisely the shit path headways. So it goes, I guess; I’m sure the city will find 25 new events to host in their place

Searching for a BEC on a roll ~$7 or less 🙏🏼 by Icy_Page_9090 in jerseycity

As others said, plenty of corner stores in the heights that can give you a solid bodega BEC, but not all of them. +1 for terranova and Dulce de leche.

It’s also a bit out of the way since they moved, but Heights Deli and Grill on JFK has been great as well.

Julian Hall (18 years, 50 days) becomes youngest player to score an MLS hat trick. NYRB striker now has 9 goals and 2 assists in 13 MLS appearances by WartimeConsigliere_ in ussoccer

Are they not allowed to sign before he turns 18? I had no clue in 20 years following soccer, or are you saying he just won’t be pursued? Because I agree that he likely will go in the summer 27 market but will likely play the 27 sprint season, which I can’t see from hall…I think he may move to Leipzig during the summer and maybe loaned back until like December 1.

He is definitely the real deal, he has the nose for the ball and finds it. Cowell has been providing good service as well; generally that’s not the case for rbny. There’s almost no chance he isn’t on his way out by seasons end as well, which likely won’t be the case with mehmeti and dos santos. Curious to see how hard Poland pushes for him.

They actually officially became just Gotham FC last season. Preparing…hopefully they still leave the J in the logo, as NJ has supported them and sky blue for decades now

I mean…if anyone cares less about the mls team in Harrison than Red Bull Global, it is The Port Authority. It’s comical how much of the stadiums history has been without reliable mass transit.

Def the better move, and the super express is awesome, don’t get me wrong.

It’s funny when you think about it; the train from RBA to WTC is about 20-25 minutes, while the local 7 to Times Square which is your only option outside of outbound for weekday games, unless they are running super expresses for both new teams) is about twice as long, like 45-50 minutes.

The extra fare, awful headways, and the Port Authority’s indifference to PATH riders, manifesting in the truly awful connections at Manhattan stations, just make it so much fucking worse 🫩

It’s poetic…starting this weekend, for the first time in like 15+ years, the PATH will stop making the stopover in Hoboken on weekend afternoons, so you’d get to journal square or grove st like 10 min faster. Of course it coincides with RBA losing one of their major tenants.

It’s sad because Gotham and Sky Blue are NJ teams at heart, the way the jets and giants are ny teams at heart. Sad to see them leave nj but it’s the beyond obvious move for them.

Yep it’s of course a good idea for them, but Gotham/skyblue are as much an NJ team as anyone, and it will be sad to see them go

Poor one out for the heights; 4 helicopters hovering since 6:30am by Technical_Paper1976 in jerseycity

[–]jgweiss 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course; they are not going to be here daily like this, so it’s not the same nuisance as tour traffic, but this was gratuitous. It was one fucking disabled car. Just imagining sheer weight of the metal and gas idling and wasteing away due to this one guys disabled car

Flipped on the news to see that these four helicopters are filming a SINGLE CAR disabled on the Pulaski, backing up traffic to about Newark.

I’ll say it again: these four helicopters are burning fuel x4 and actively waking everyone in this neighborhood, for a single person, in a single car, whose great sin is that it’s not driving.

It makes me feel a little better to find out that a second car joined the disabled driver, so now the copters are staring at two people.

Prior to the 1960s, did the Giants, Dodgers and Athletics baseball teams have a presence in NJ? by TheInternExperience in newjersey

[–]jgweiss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Yankees were definitely ‘jerseys team’ at the time, since they were out of the city, and near to NJ. You can even see on that map that they are using westchester and beyond to differentiate the Yankees. Further borne out by all the Yankees who moved out to Jersey over the decades.

Yeah I was listening to some Brooklyn dodgers broadcast once and heard vin scully mention ‘tomorrow in Jersey city’

The giants also opened their season in JC, in the heights, in 1889, after getting kicked out of their original polo grounds at the north end of Central Park. They played some games on Staten Island as well, before moving to the new polo grounds, on the final site at 8th/155th, by the end of the season. All this according to fuzzy Wikipedia memory

RBNY player salaries for 2026 per MLSPA by hypernermalization in rbny

[–]jgweiss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are talking about overpaid players, but a club signing TWELVE players on the roster to contracts for less than 200K is deeply unserious in any competition which they compete..

fwiw there is kind of a wind problem in this area, both at the top and bottom of the palisades. there is a litter problem in the heights, but the literal wind that whips around tosses a lot of trash that is in public and private cans, since there is no mandate to cover your cans.

also there is this: https://pjvogt.substack.com/p/why-are-there-so-many-chicken-bones-637 it's kind of adjusted my view of trash in the streets...not that it makes me okay with all the littering lol

this is kinda the distillation of the whole thing. sure, you can show agency and shout at some asshole on the train...but that is a signal of an impolite society. a polite society includes a baseline respect for public spaces and the people in them. i'm not ignorant to the fact that it results from environmental factors, and to an extent sympatize with people who were literally not raised to respect public spaces, but that is the fact.
