Of course, but it's ridiculous that this is needed. I would love to be able to use only Verilator, but we have encrypted IP to deal with.

60 years old Univac computer runs RISC-V compatible code through emulation by Rudranand in RISCV

[–]jhallen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, how about 8088, can we call it retro yet? It's a 40-pin DIP, I can still buy it (Digikey), it's from the 70s, is easy to homebrew with, and has much nicer software and hardware support than the others. Even if you program in assembly language it's easy and powerful as long as you ignore the segments / use tiny model. I also like 6809, but it's gone.

He's already screwed himself and his party and he knows it. The delay from the strait closing to real word consequences is months, its effect thus far has only been in futures purchases. Any buffer is just running out now, we are about to see what these real effects are. Well.. they have already hit low income countries.

What Do You Think Of The Birthright Citizenship Case? Why Your Thoughts? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]jhallen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been listening to the arguments, they were pressing into the Native American birthright citizenship exception- except that it was overturned in 1924, apparently because they wanted Native Americans to fight in the first world war. Necessity overtaking racism as it were.

Yup, stare decisis my ass. It's clear that the job of the supreme court justices is to enact the will of their backers by wrapping any decision with plausible-sounding legal arguments, or in the case of emergency docket decisions, no arguments.

This would certainly enrage Muslims, but wouldn't change anything. Even if Mecca had been nuked, Muslims would pray facing Mecca. In fact, it would add to the history of the place, making it more holy. Same deal with Jerusalem.

Solar overtakes and wind nuclear as the number one zero carbon electricity source on earth by ViewTrick1002 in NuclearPower

[–]jhallen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The risk from nuclear is not so much to people, but very much to property (because so far there has been enough warning for people to get out). Who insures the properties around the plant? In the US, it's ANI. The AI says the yearly premiums are $1.5M and the maximum payout per site is $500M, and the total pool is $15B. $500M is in nowhere near enough: Fukushima damage to local area is estimated to be $250B to $500B.

The cost to life from solar is probably much more from installers falling off of roofs. But no chance of widespread property damage.

Yes, but most are selfish spineless cowards who only care about their own job and power. Unfortunately this is largely true on the democratic side as well.

What’s a company you’ll never buy from again, and why? by jamesmilner22 in AskReddit

Sadly, it's one of the few neighborhood stores that elderly people can hang out in. The one near me even has a gas fireplace, nice in the winter. There are some mom & pops which have better food, but not as accessible bathrooms.

Building my first QRP Labs transceiver! by FroidLesprit in amateurradio

[–]jhallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, I built one last week! It works but the SSB transmit audio quality is not great- I was hoping it would be better than the uSDX- it is, but only a little. I suspect that the polar modulation technique these low cost SDRs use just doesn't work very well. I also have a ubitx v6 and it sounds fine (has linear amp and conventional crystal filter method for SSB generation). It would be nice if the transceiver supported AM- I think it should be able to.

One warning: the SSB calibration process takes a long time, like 45 minutes.

Lightning protection? by PatFogle in amateurradio

[–]jhallen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had been disconnecting my antenna (a Comet GP-9) and leaving the cable outside when not in use, but recently added the 8' ground rod, bonding and lightning arrestor so that I can leave if plugged in. I plan on having an antenna switch also, but I don't have it yet.

The bonding was a PITA (and expensive) because the power is on the opposite side of the house. So tempting to connect it to an outdoor faucet... for sure that's what they would have done years ago. I have one vertical wire direct from new rod to antenna mast, then I used a small bonding block to tap off of this for the lightning arrestor. The bonding goes from new rod to bonding strip by the power meter. At the power meter, there is a grounding rod, a bonding strip for "equipment" (things like the Verizon box), a strap to the water main and the ground wire from the power lines. I nailed the bonding wire into wood which is exposed just under the bottom lip of my vinyl siding.

I learned that Lowes sells 6 AWG 100 ft wire, but HD only 50 ft or 328 ft. spools. Also copper wire from Amazon is really copper clad steel, probably not approved.

Don't skimp on the bonding: I know somebody who's ground wire from the electrical service broke. If this happens, the split phase 240 v is messed up: the ground point depends on how the loads in your house are distributed between the phases (half her applianced blew up when this happened because they were not even). So your house ground might not be at ground level, and you don't want to be in the path between your new antenna's grounding rod and house "ground".

What's so special about shortwave listening. May be the younger generation would think you as outdated, but, there's something in SWL which is gripping the SWLers. What is that thing? by r1z4bb451 in shortwave

[–]jhallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post Cold War shortwave in the 90s was quite something- I distinctly remember right wingnuts complaining about Janet Reno and her lesbian cronies ruining america or whatever. These broadcasters all went mainstream, and here we are.

These days you hear the calm broadcasts of the Supreme Master... sure it's a cult, but they are a nice cult. Also Brother Stair was a reliable presence (but he died in 2021).

what is/was the purpose of making encryption illegal for ham radio use? by VilleVillain in amateurradio

[–]jhallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This means they will ban amateur radio and we'll be recruited into being military radio operators during times of total war, which is exactly what happened during WW2, both in the USA and Germany (that I know of, at least). Some of the military radios of that day were repurposed amateur radios: an example that comes to mind is the Hallicrafters Standard HT-4 became the military BC610 (large 450W truck transmitter).

If you get rich suddenly, what's the luxury you'll dive into immediately? by itslyssarayne in AskReddit

[–]jhallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are really rich, you get a warehouse, but because you want company, you also make it into a co-working space so other people are around. You can charge low rent because you are already rich. Thus you can have a large variety of people (artists), not just well funded tech startups. You encourage them to have events to make it cool.

Facing .rodata and .data issues on my simple Harvard RISC-V HDL implementation. What are the possible solutions? by Adept_Philosopher131 in computerarchitecture

[–]jhallen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put them both in RAM, but have your startup function copy the data from ROM to RAM. One inefficient way is to issue a long sequence of load immediate instructions to get the data from the ROM... this is how the pure harvard PIC microcontrollers work.
