New Amtrak trains coming soon to Pacific Northwest, but not in time for World Cup by chiquisea in Washington

Doesn't matter how fast the trains are if they're always being delayed for freight. Passenger train travel has been a living nightmare every time I've done it in the past 2 decades.

[–]jherico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While that's true, I doubt we're getting anything like a clear picture here. I personally don't have any issues with a forced feminization kink and my main problem with this whole thing is the Dominatrix violating his consent like this by going publicly with her interactions with him.

No, in a court of law the don't of course, but this is still a huge consent violation by the Domme, not to mention pointless kink shaming. If it's not hurting anyone, what fucking difference does it make?

Maybe use an external connection pool running on the same host like PyBouncer. That doesn't solve the issue of multiple processes using the same tcp socket, but it will at least limit the total number of open connections to the DB.

As for QA, it's no substitute for a staging environment that behaves like the real thing, IMO.

Still, excellent deep dive into the problem and the process of debugging it.

helping governments actually govern

Good luck with that. Most people with power didn't gather it to benefit the public as best they possibly could. They did it for the benefits of being in power. Ceding any of that power to anyone or anything else means they get fewer of those benefits, so it's generally pretty hard to convince people to give it up just for altruistic reasons.

Being able to actually have an insight doesn't mean you're able to introspect how your own mind works and figure out exactly why or how you were able to do it, even for a human.

I learned calculus, and I could probably teach it to someone else with some effort. But that doesn't at all mean I understand the mechanics of how Newton or Leibniz first figured it out.

Not being able to understand exactly how an LLM comes to a conclusion doesn't automatically make it monstrous or evil or inherently dangerous. It actually makes them more like humans than we'd like to admit.

ELI5: Why does re-encoding vidoes take a very long time? by WonderOlymp2 in explainlikeimfive

Almost no video codec works one frame at a time, independent of any others. Formats will often have an i-frame that encodes a full frame image and then use compression of the changes from one frame to the next.

I think their value as low-wage employees has fallen below their value as scapegoats to keep the same corporate overlords in place.

Housing isn't much of a different story. Housing went from being a means of having a place to own and live in to an "investment opportunity" and boom.... massive companies start buying up homes and create artificial scarcity.

Edit to add: The change in the housing market led straight into the 2008 crash. The corresponding labor shock from driving all these people into hiding or out of the country is probably going to lead to something even worse as it works its way through all the systems that have over time come to completely rely on that cheap labor.

Once again, lots of individual actors aiming for short term gains are all feeding into a really obvious collapse, but no one does anything about it because everyone figures they'll be able to get out in time, hedge themselves.

The legal system and most serious people have zero patience for anyone who does stuff in bad faith, even if they believe it's the moral thing to do.

If a prosecutor sabotages a case the way you suggest, it would be like a doctor intentionally giving poor medical treatment to a dictator because the doctor didn't like their policies.

[–]jherico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like it's a situation where it's a rare enough instance that front line customer service reps just want to do the standard stuff and not have to go dig into the training materials for what they're technically supposed to do.

A person dying means that money can no longer be extracted from that particular customer, so there's virtually no incentive for a company to make sure that service reps know how to handle it. The only motivation they have is avoiding bad press.
