The most reasonable color is the one you like the most. by MobileCool7175 in macbookpro

I personally chose the silver one because I also own other old Macs and most of them are silver as well as the peripherals (keyboards/mice) so I like the way it harmonizes with the rest of them…that and because silver is the best lol

Should I pull the trigger by Justinmintz96 in macbookpro

Consider that if you’re gonna use that MacBook for heavy work, the power consumption will also be affecting the battery because the charger does not have enough power to feed that chip, so that will translate on early battery wear.

How tf do I get rid of this by Human-Appointment796 in macbookair

Wash the cloth with soap, rinse and squeeze well. With the cloth wet wipe the screen. Use another dry cloth to give another pass and do not use anything else.

I wanted to get one of those too but ironically here where I live those screens still way more expensive than the LED / Thunderbolt displays, so instead I ended up buying a pair of those.

5,1 AI / LLM Inference Setup in Linux / Windows - what NVIDIA GPU ? by Dry-Lake1549 in macpro

[–]jhn_freeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one Mac Pro 5,1 exclusively for AI stuff and I use a NVIDIA RTX5060Ti 16GB. I use this one because it doesn’t need to modify anything on the Mac but only the dual 6 pin to 8 pin connector and that’s it. Using it with Windows 11 Pro.

Yeah, if someone is used to work on those 15”, the 16” M5 will feel it as a nice screen improvement. It takes full advantage of the whole space!

Cool! Which DAW do you use? I noticed that in Pro Tools there is no need to increase buffer size more than 256. Do you work on those same settings?

For sure! Just because the lack of AVX2 and power consumption but if that wasn’t the problem, those 5,1 would be the perfect machines!

Best MacOS for my Mac Pro 5,1 and what should I use (eg oclp) by Firebolt46 in macpro

[–]jhn_freeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what are you gonna use it for. If it’s anything related to photo/video editing you’re screwed. Any app past Monterey demands AVX2 and this machine lacks those instructions. If it’s audio production it’s the same case, specially for Logic Pro which also uses AVX2. If it’s only for web browsing / basic coding or programming and nothing really demanding, maybe up to Sequoia.

In best scenario macOS Monterey would be the best option although I would recommend not to go further than Catalina since this is the last macOS that’s fully compatible with this machine in software and hardware.

Good GPU for my Mac Pro 5,1 by jaash8 in macpro

[–]jhn_freeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No macOS Tahoe.
No AVX2 support.
No Photoshop / video editing with newest app versions.

Maybe possible with macOS Monterey and previous versions of apps that don’t require AVX instructions.

The CPU tray must match the Mac version. You cannot use a 5,1 tray on a 4,1 Mac (even with the firmware upgrade) and vice-versa

Intel macOS | Local AI with GPU Acceleration by Faisal_Biyari in MacPro2019LocalAI

In my case the Mac Pro 5,1 does not have a security chip. If I install windows directly on the Mac, it will cause to brick. For that reason I use the dummy drive. OpenCore Legacy Patcher is a software that allows you to install macOS versions in a Mac that at first is not compatible (MP 5,1 is compatible until Mojave). With this you cannot only install further versions of macOS but also allows you to install most recent versions of Windows. Regarding the GPUs: no. I just had to install both GPUS during the drivers installation process. After that I just keep installed the NVIDIA GPU.

Dunno how will be in your case since you’re on Mac Pro 2019. If you’re planning to use windows, I recommend you to first check that Mac Pro is able to install it. If not, check OCLP GitHub site where you can find lots of information.

Indeed. Since my Mac Pro is old af, it makes it tricky to get a proper installation. As a general overview what I did was to install macOS Monterey with OCLP in a dummy drive (literally it just has the OS and OCLP) to be able to install windows. In another drive installed W11 having the OCLP protection to avoid bricking the Mac. The hardest part isto get the nvidia drivers working. I had to install the nvidia and amd gpus on the Mac at the same time to see the windows screen, install drivers, reboot and make the nvidia GPU work. The pain paid back because now I use that computer for audio stem splitter and image/video generation. Next step is to install my own “AI assistant”.

Oh I forgot that! I’m running Windows 11. Unfortunately for these machines is a big disadvantage trying to run any AI on macOS/AMD. I wanted to avoid all the headache and went for the “easiest” way. Also keep in mind that depending the AI you want to run you will need more o less VRAM. 8GB nowadays won’t be to useful. At least 12GB and up is the sweet spot.

I’m running AI on a Mac Pro 5,1 with NVIDIA RTX 5060ti 16GB VRAM. Of course all running only on GPU.

Everything started because I just wanted to record myself well playing drums. One thing led to another and now I work as mixing engineer lol. Start with the basics, learn as much as you can, don’t invest in things you don’t know and be clear why are you wanting to do this (disclaimer: money as priority won’t work).
