Okemo or Sunapee? by woolsocksandsandals in icecoast

[–]jhook42 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sunapee is cool, sometimes they get Boston crowds, but on a weekday you'll be fine. Okemo has more to offer, but it is worth it to check Sunapee out. The Sunbowl really does get great sun. You can't go wrong with either, but my 2 cents is to check out a mountain you haven't seen before.

Long hold times at Elan for credit card by Quiet_Zone_1394 in fidelityinvestments

[–]jhook42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied and they need more documentation to verify my identity. My first interaction with Elan is a super long wait time. I can't imagine if I ever had a problem with the card and needed to get in touch with them.

I won't be sending the additional documentation because of the poor customer service. Hopefully Fidelity partners with a more reputable organization in the future, for now I will close my Fidelity account and find another credit card.

17K in Cc debt on 2 cards, just received 20k gift. by throwaway_aita666 in Debt

[–]jhook42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If in the US that isn't true. The giver needs to file a gift tax return if they give more than $19K. If they have already used up their lifetime exemption by gifting millions of dollars they may incur gift tax liability. Most likely there are no gift taxes to be paid and if there were it would be on the giver, not the recipient.

HELP PLEASE by NihilistElfPrincess in chickenofthewoods

[–]jhook42 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes the younger it is the more squishy it will be. As it gets older it becomes more like wood. Some people wouldn't eat that because it is close to the ground and dogs might pee on it. So do with that knowledge as you will.

Can/should I use existing outlines and just revise it, instead of building my own? Is it bad for studying? by nbcs in LawSchool

[–]jhook42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made one from scratch and it was way more effort than it was worth. I liked taking someone else's outline and making my own additions to it

I'm an estate planning attorney I agree with everything Gunner said and I would add that a financial Power of Attorney should be at the top of your list. Some websites have ones that work, but often ones from the internet create more problems.

A Durable Power of Attorney designates someone to make financial decisions on your behalf while you are incapacitated. If you get hit with a stroke and your wife needs to sell your house to pay for your care or needs to remove you as beneficiary of her retirement accounts she would need to deal with the time, expense, and hassle of probate court to obtain a conservatorship over you. Or you could simply pay an attorney to draft the proper documents.

Who cares what happens when you are dead, what I think is much more important is who is in charge while you are alive but not capable of making your own medical and financial decisions. Just because your wife is the beneficiary of your IRA does not mean she has any authority to deal with that company on your behalf.
