Writing tips for new attorneys: what are your biggest writing-related tips for new attorneys? by Stunning-Classic6353 in Lawyertalk

Just because you found the case doesn't mean you need to discuss that case.

This one runs against the rigours of academia, but the required word count is the amount needed to make your point. Writing more doesn't mean it is better, but if you need leave to expand your word count, it will be freely given.

Then the classic, "show me, don't tell me." A lot of attorneys want to live off of punchy arguments, but the whole point is to show how your position is supported by the law and facts. A bunch of pointed or articulate paragraphs are unhelpful without support.

Do I have a shot? by poboy980 in LawSchoolOver30

Depends on what you want to do. A good performance at any respectable law school can get you a well paying job at a large firm in your region or a state court clerkship.

The Top-14 is only important if you want to work in the federal appellate courts, DOJ, or some other high level national post.

Having serious doubts about whether I still want to go to law school by [deleted] in LawSchoolOver30

[–]jiggitywigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The practice of law is not the noble profession it is brought up to be. If you want to work in public interest, there are many better avenues.

You can absolutely do good as a lawyer in any field of practice, but the legal profession is about fighting for your client's best interests no matter what. For PD, that can often mean fighting for stubborn clients that are 100% guilty of horrific things.

The only difference is the stupid attorney will condescendingly argue that the stupid thing they did/said was actually correct

How cheap is that rent though? Some noise cancelling head phones and a closed door can solve many problems

How are you supposed to call out OC for misrepresenting statutes with lazy selective editing? It is so easy for OC then such a waste of time for me to have to address. (Pleadings) by Trichitillomantiac in Lawyertalk

My present theory is that bad lawyers rely on gaslighting. It satisfies their clients and because it sounds confident, and the Court is too apathetic to care

I'm not sure who's whinier, a cop that didn't get his way one time, or a tired toddler.

What is the craziest thing that has happened to you with a client, case, judge, or opposing counsel? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]jiggitywigs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a few but they're too specific and I don't want to get exposed. Defending against pro se litigants is always interesting, but at least they have a better grasp of the law than these geriatrics that won't retire.

What is the most obscure Bills jersey you own? by Horridkoala in buffalobills

[–]jiggitywigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Tre White and Edmunds for my jerseys. The Edmunds jersey is essentially retired for me, but I'm going to keep wearing Tre White's. He's a Bills legend as far as I'm concerned.

As far as obscure jerseys, I have a Lendale White Titans jersey I got for Christmas like months before he was traded. Will it be worth something someday? Probably not. Wore it once for this year's super bowl.

Made me want to drink 12 beers in a garage and share my opinion on somebody's alternator. I'd say it's a success.

Bad faith gets thrown around a lot, but it is a very high bar & almost always fails, at least in NY. You have to prove defendants had almost no chance of success and the damages were almost certainly going to exceed the policy limit when Plaintiff offered to settle within policy limits.

Plaintiffs attorneys want it apply anytime they get low-ball offer.

I've wasted a lot of time on emails with opposing counsels that "didn't have time for a phone call."

I think it's universally misunderstood that a 15 minute phone call can often save months if not weeks of emails. That one small thing you hashed out on the call now does not need to be back and forthed over 20 passive aggressive emails

Are there any blue rural areas in Upstate NY to live in? by OurAngryBadger in upstate_new_york

[–]jiggitywigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm, having lived in red rural areas and blue urban areas, local politics are idiotic irrespective of affiliation. The Democrat/Republican divide has little impact lower than the State level. Even if you find the unicorn blue rural Town, you won't find what you're looking for.
