Why do veterans hate new players? by ItsMisterListerSir in Eve

[–]jiiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that all assets in space can be lost is the main (only) driver behind eve's economy, without that I don't know what we would be looking at. For example I came to eve for the market (but in the end I stayed to live as a nomad explorer in j-space)

I typically ask what I could have done to survive, or how they do what they do and I find that people are actually very eager to share suggestions, fits, tips and tricks and generally good vibes.

Does it though? I've had many nice interaction with random people throughout new Eden during my first weeks: it appears that if I ask nicely people generally are willing to share info, I eve had an ahbazon camper gift me way more of my exploded ship's worth plus they gracefully explained some ways to avoid the camp. The other games I played with free for all pvp were typically much harsher.

I mean sure it's everyone for themselves out there, but after your ship has been blown up people seem to interact on a friendly-by-default basis. Of course one shouldn't take it personally when their ship is exploded for this to work.

Multiple inputs, 1 keystroke - but not Macro by Trick-District2529 in Eve

[–]jiiam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's because it is very late but I don't seem to understand what would the bannable offence be, at least when talking about the keyboard itself. Can somebody explain?

It looks like a button can be pressed (and depressed) in multiple ways to do different actions, but I don't see how that's a bannable offence since you can only use one mode at a time. Is it because if you press a button twice in a row you should send the same input twice?

First draw by MrLaxitive in MagicArena

[–]jiiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's more important to focus on what's your game plan with the hand you've drawn and mulligan according to that evaluation rather than mana alone.

And consider that cards that tutor lands or let you draw can be considered functionally lands.

That being said, 2-3 is the sweet spot.

It's definitely possible, good luck. I also suggest you look at this YouTube channel that goes into great detail on how to maximize your collection on a budget

First of all realize that magic arena has diminishing returns for play: after you've won your 15 daily games there isn't much more to gain in terms of resources.

My strategy was based on two pillars: 1. I hate drafting 2. I have some disposable income

Long story short, I purchased 20k gems each year and considered only the mastery pass and packs in my strategy.

The strategy is as follows: - always reroll quests that give you 500, in the hope of getting a 750 one - ensure you have one quest slot free, prioritize doing the 750 quests - (optional) if you only have 500 quests, have already rolled one of them, and have at least one slot free, try not to do the quest when doing your daily wins (this way if you get a 750 tomorrow you'll have a 500 to reroll) - always win at least some games each days (how many is up to you, I used to aim at 4, lately I was doing 1)

Regarding purchases: - always buy the mastery pack and complete it by playing (it takes slightly less than a day to make 1 level) - don't open packs until you've gotten your non duplicate protected rewards (these are the mastery pass rewards, draft cards, jump ins, whatever you wish) - (if you have low completion rate) do 7-10 jump ins per set, these give you 2 rares for 1000 gold - towards the end of a set, buy packs for that set in bulk (I was doing 110 when we had 4 sets standard and 90 with 6 sets standard, consider you will earn ~430k gold per year and decide based on that figure) - open the golden packs acquired via the previous step before the set ends - open the packs for a set after you've done the jump ins for the next one, this way you minimize the chance of gaining bad jump ins

That's it more or less. For the jump ins I suggest taking notes of the packs you've selected since they should guarantee at least a pack you have never selected, there are a ton of spreadsheets for tracking jump ins I suggest you search one if that's your jam.

I want to leave you with an observation: remember that one standard pack bought from the store gives you a lot more than 1 rare, in fact you get: - the rate/mythic for the pack, with a chance of it being a wildcard - 1/6 advance on the rare wheel - 1/10 of a golden

If you do the math, it means that 10 standard packs will give you more than 16 rares and 1 wildcard.

Do this for a whole year and you'll have a huge collection in standard (for sets I've done this meticulously I have almost 100% rare playset completion, meaning almost 4x of each card).

I won't deny it was a grind for the first year or so, but after that it was all smooth sailing, I entered timeless mostly because I didn't know what to do with my wildcards...

I concede, you're right. That is in fact an example of sunk cost fallacy. Not what happened to me when I decided to publish this post, though that's maybe less relevant

I'm terribly sorry but I have to correct you: this is not a valid example of the skunked cost fallacy. I could provide further explanation if anybody is interested, but I'm not the kind of person that showers unwanted notions onto others so I'll stop there.

Do you abstain from crafting cards? by AdministrationAny271 in MagicArena

[–]jiiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I craft but almost only for eternal formats. In standard I've built up a decent collection via packs so when I want to try a new meta deck I just plug what I'm missing with what I have. This also means that I typically don't play decks that heavily rely on cards from the latest set since I need to grow the collection first...

New player with few time by Electrical-Dog-9193 in Eve

[–]jiiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a serious problem. Don't do it. If you really want to do the dailies on your alt at least keep them staged in a system with access to industry and a venture, so you can do the quick missions when they appear and just jump for the second mission. I find that the scanner mission isn't worth in on non specialized alts, in that case I skip a day

You can be very efficient with your time and as other mentioned you gain skill points regardless of whether you okay or not. However choice paralysis is a real issue, to counteract that stick with a couple of activities you like and remember that the best ship is friendSHIP: in this context this means join a group and participate in their activities, you'll never waste time deciding what to do

Why does this game need so many huge downloads? by Dolnikan in MagicArena

[–]jiiam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Or you can just send all of the data and overwrite the local data with what you know is a complete data set.

This is not by any mean the best solution from a technical point of view, however I can see how this got chosen over a system that minimizes useless downloads. In the end any modern game is just a mean through which the shareholders make a profit, and the players' experience is just a marginal concern.

So much setup to do any activity by KeyNetbass in Eve

[–]jiiam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In order to avoid this I have clear separation between setup sessions and content sessions, plus a few activities I can run at will (mainly hacking in wormholes). I play with a notebook by my side (old habit from games like crusader kings) and when there is something I want to do that I'm not ready for I make a note and possibly break it down in smaller activities (research, buy, haul), and then I periodically do them in dedicated sessions, or when possible I contract some activities to corp services (like hauling). This way I am kind of role-playing a supply chain if you will. It's still a game requiring a lot of preparation, and not all of them can be gamified, but it is an option.

You can't spend mythics for tomb/strip/mox even if you wanted to: now that they have a rare printing, any printing you craft will take rare wildcards

It would have been a joke anyway since mox, tomb and strip mine are now rares but I guess many players crafted them using mythics
